PS3 Pre-Orders Sell Out in Minutes

By Ed Oswald, BetaNews

October 10, 2006, 12:53 PM

The nation's largest gaming retailer GameStop began taking pre-orders Tuesday for the PlayStation 3 at both its GameStop and EB Games locations across the US, however in most cases the stores sold through their scant allotments almost immediately.

"Due to extremely limited supply, we expect to deplete this allocation very quickly, most likely in minutes," GameStop said.

Press reports indicate most stores were promised eight consoles, however some higher-traffic stores will receive double shipments. At each store, employee pre-orders have been limited to two consoles. GameStop is asking for a $100 deposit to place the order. That leaves only six PS3 units for customers.

Although the deposit secures a system, it does not guarantee the individual will receive a PS3 at launch: GameStop added a clause into the agreement stating that it had no control over shipping or production issues.

In the near future, the company plans to offer an online pre-order system, however software to handle the orders has not yet been completed. In either case, only one PS3 can be pre-ordered per household.

The small pre-order offering highlights the possible early troubles that Sony's next-generation console could have at retail. While Microsoft's Xbox 360 is expected to have wide availability, the PS3 will likely struggle to keep pace with demand.

Add to the mix the launch of the Nintendo Wii, which so far seems to be free of production issues, and it could mean holiday sales troubles for the already-struggling Japanese electronics maker.

What I have heard, but is unconfirmed, is the basic (free) service will have online game profiles score cards, downloadable content, messaging, email. The pay service will have extras like IM and other stuff.

Seeing as Sony are the underdog with online gaming, expect the PS3's online service to be a loss-leader..

I'm always open to discussing consoles and which may be better and such, but it drives me crazy when people twist facts.

Sony wanted to release in the Spring - Problems prevented that. Don't make them out to be more than they are. They HAD to delay or they would have released a console that didn't work.

And how long a previous console "lasted" has nothing to do with anything either. Xbox was late to the last generation and due to them not needing to delay, slightly earlier than everyone else to this generation. A smart move for a company that is trying to gain more share in the market.

Again, twisting things as usual.

My point - BOTH SONY AND MICROSOFT RUISHED THEIR RELEASES.

They both released with far fewer consoles than they should. If Microsoft didn't rush, they would have released in the Spring with a lot more consoles. If Sony didn't rush now, they would do the same this coming spring, but they both wanted to release before the holidays.

Not to mention - In Sony's case, putting in a DVD would not have been going for the $$$$ (as you put it) - Waiting and releasing with bluray is Sony's way of going for the money!

Score: 0

Microsoft rushed their release by cutting specs, and having few consoles for launch. Sony are only guilty of the latter.

As for the Blu-Ray, waiting for Blu-Ray is the smart move, both 20GB and 60GB are Blu-Ray enabled, and have HDD, so all the games can take advantage of them. Xbox360 is stuck in halfway house, with some models with HDD, some not, optional HD-DVD. How on earth can a developer utilise any of them, when they are all optional...

Score: 0

By mshulman

And how did Microsoft cut specs?

While some 360 units don't have HDD's, developers still have been able to make use of it. All it takes is a little creativity from developers. Like Oblivion does, they could have some code that will use a HDD if it exists.

I do agree that they should have just had the HDD with every unit though, but I don't see it affecting gameplay in anyway.

As a developer myself, I know it's not as single as some people think. If you try to write a game to cater for both HDD and non-HDD, you will end up with 2 seperate and very different games, or one single compromised game. All the Xbox360 titles I have seen have been the later, and the HDD use is very generic, like caching levels and such, there is no widespread use of the HDD designed in from the start, merely added in bits to take advantage of it, if it's there.

lol, this is funny to see ppl throw out random things, without any proof or backups, a recall is when a substantion percentage has an issue, let say its 65%, meaning if 65% of the units sold, had this same issue, they recall, well guess what, if 63% do, it does not meet recall quota, therefore no recall is done.

that said, i think each individual unit has the ability to overacheve, or underacheive the norm, take my very used ps2 for example, its a sweet system, it still works, the fans a bit noisy now, but i could clean it if i wanted to, now my xbox the dvd drive is glitchy, i have to close it, turn off the machine, and boot it back up or it will continue to spit out the drive.

now thats just comparing those two here, everyones forgetting the fundimentals, man my nes still works like a charm, so does my sega genesis, and my snes, i think the older systems were built with the same intentions that the new ones try and match, being the first to do something, and be durable.

again, i must state, just becasue everyone elses ps3, works fine, does not mean yours will as well, you might treat it differently, or could just be a simple hardware glitch.

go with what you want as a console, dont tihnk you need to change others opinions becasue it makes you feel better.

Let's look at what we know though:

1. 360's have seemed to fail due to heat issues.
2. 360 Kiosks in stores probably have less airflow than the Kiosks at that event.
3. Kiosks in stores worked many months before failing or never have failed.
4. Event halls are usually kept reasonably cool
5. PS3's could last a week in those kiosks

Based on all we know above - How long do you expect kiosks in stores to last? And how will people feel about buying a console if they walk in to a store a few months after release and the kiosk is broken?

People seem to forget that people are much more likely to complain than praise. For every 10 people the complain or post or make known their issues, there is 1 person that might say what a good experience they are having.

Same exact thing will happen with PS3. Based on the fact that they are using new technology in every aspect of it, it is reasonable to presume they may have more issues. Let's just look at the fact that at the recent event they were showcased at, they had to be rebooted frequently due to heat.

They found that people weren't buying the triples as much as the others, so they dropped it from the menu. Then they found that their sales of doubles dropped. That's when they realized, that what was helping their doubles sell was the triples. People were thinking, "I can eat more than a single, but I don't want to spend that much on a triple so I'll just get a double." People aren't going to be able to afford "Top of the line" (if you want to call the PS3 that, even if it isn't), they'll be more willing to settle for something similar but less expensive. "I don't need HD movie playback yet, and I can get it later, but I want something more powerful than a Wii; I can settle for an Xbox360." But since there won't be any "triples" available this holiday season, people will only be comparing the Wii and 360, and people will be more likely to buy a Wii. And why have they not visited a shop in the last year to buy an XBox360? Simply people are waiting for PS3, Xbox360 is not a substitute...

Xbox360 is not a substitute...
But it IS. People will be flocking to stores to get the hottest new item, and it won't be there, and they won't want to go home empty handed...especially if they find out how long they are probably going to have to wait to get what they came for.

Also, I didn't specifically say XBox360, you did.

Notice he ommits the Wii, which at release time will be the primary competitor with the PS3. And at $250 bucks, I dont know many people that will pass up this deal.

What is there to backup, if people wanted XBox360, they have had ample oppertunity to buy one, a full year infact. The fact there is still a market for WII and PS3 means not everyone is happy with what Xbox360 is offering...

Maybe people either wanted to wait to see what next years offerings were, didn't have the cash to get the 360 a year ago, or wanted to get the console for a Christmas gift, and didn't have a chance last year.

Just because they didn't already buy a 360 doesn't mean they don't want to.

Or that all they can afford is a Wii. Not everyone has the money to spend on an xbox360 or a PS3. Since the majority of games for xbox360 or PS3 are meant for the older audiences (except the Xboxlive arcade games), the parents aren't exactly scrambling to buy their kids one. The Wii games are going to be a lot more kid friendly. And the parents will be a lot more willing to spend $250 than $300-$400 for Xbox360 or $500-$600 on PS3. I have an Xbox360, but if I were to get another system it would be a Wii, since it is cheaper.

In my opinion the Xbox360 and Wii will have the most entertainment bang for you buck. Xbox360 since there are a TON of cheap and addicting arcade games, so you don't have to spend $60 a game. Wii since you can download many of your favorite old school NES, SNES, N64 games and has built in wi-fi.

Obviously your 15 years old, and never got a chance to play the classics... Either way, I'm not buying just for the old games. I also want to get Twilight Princess.

Joust was great 20 years ago, but buying a new console to play it, give me a break.. Playstation has those cult classic games in the bargain bins for years..

Is that the best reason to buy a WII, or is it an excuse for it's lack of modern graphics capability?

Numb nuts, obviously I'm referring to Nintento classics, not midway. You know the old mario games, metroid, zelda, hell even starfox.

"lack of modern graphics", see this is where I stop and realise you dont really play games. If you did, you'd know that theres a big difference between quantity and quality. Just because a game/system has better graphics, it doesnt mean that the quality of their games is good. I for 1, rather play a new Zelda game over the next FPS that $ony dishes out.

The fact there is still a market for WII and PS3 means not everyone is happy with what Xbox360 is offering...
Or it could mean they just want choices and were waiting to see what Sony and Nintendo came out with, or they were waiting for a year to let all the major bugs involved with a new system get resolved, or were waiting until the number of games availible increased...and they might be tired of waiting and want to buy something very soon. If Sony can't supply, some people will take their money elsewhere.

And when has ANYTHING made everyone happy?
