PS3 Sales Dropping in Japan

By Ed Oswald, BetaNews

January 19, 2007, 12:03 PM

There is increasing evidence worldwide that sales of the PlayStation 3 are beginning to slow significantly. A firm says sales of the console in Japan this past week were the worst since launch.

Japanese research firm Media Create said the console sold 25,531 units overall for the week ending January 14. This was far behind the Wii, which sold about 93,708 consoles for the week. Still, that number was low too, and the second worst week since launch.

Media Create's figures are created by extrapolating national sales from surveying 3,000 retail stores across the country.

The Xbox 360, a perennial underperformer in Southeast Asia, brought up the rear with only 9,035 units. Overall, some 128,274 units were sold, the company said in data released Friday.

Sony's insistence that it has shipped one million consoles has caused analysts to wonder why there is such a large gap between the shipped number and sold console estimates from several analyst firms. Several have noted that PS3s are in ample supply in some stores in Japan.

PlayStation 3 sales could also be hurt by the surprising success of the Nintendo Wii. Research firm Enterbrain estimated that the console sold 1.14 million consoles through the first week of January, compared with just over 534,000 for the PS3.

Another sign of the consoles weakness: In Media Create's list of top-selling games, the first PS3 title, Resistance: Fall of Man, does not appear until number 40. "Wii Sports" took the #1 spot (it is not bundled in the country, unlike in the U.S.).

So in turn, its not his fault that he does not own a PS3, its Sony's Fault and hence his barrage of "The PS3 Sucks" rants. (Pay in mind, I do not own one)

"Hollywood__" also talk in the 3rd Person allot. Hey, have you, Terrell Owens, Michael Irvin and Deon Sanders all roomed together?

You talk about me (us) getting out of our Parent's Basement, is you job to monitor this Discussion / Board and post all the YouTube Vids links you can? That takes a lot of "Free Time" to just sit there.

Yep, seen the PS3's available in a few stores in Tokyo, while the Wii's and DS's are hard to get. The PSP is Sony's other big joke trying to compete with the Nintendo DS, not even close. I'm sure the PS3 will pick up, the problem is right now there are no good games available, surprised it did as well as it did. Once the new Gran Turismo is released then it might be worth buying.

History repeats itself! Let's get back to 1994. - SEGA Saturn vs SONY Playstation. PS1 wins despite being technologically inferior to Saturn because game developers had a hard time making games for its dual-processor architecture (two CPUs working in Master/Slave mode...), plus Saturn price was 399$ vs PS1 299$. Sounds familiar, eh?

Also, one may notice that every 10 years big companies rise (and fall) - in the 70's ATARI was #1. 10 years later, NINTENDO took away its crown in the 80's. Again, 10 years later (90's) SONY defeated both NINTENDO and SEGA. That was in 1995. Now it's SONY's turn to step down from #1 place...

In 1999./2000. SONY killed one of the best consoles of all time - SEGA DREAMCAST - just because PS2 had a DVD player and because of HUGE hype SONY built up around PS2.

I agree, the Dreamcast is still a great console compared to the PS2. If you are truly a DC fan, you can buy games at less than 5 bucks a piece on FleaBay, except Marvel vs. Capcom 2, that game still fetches over 50 bucks sometimes.

Sony is failing miserably with the PS3, the hype was very short compared to the 360. I've given Sony thousands of dollars over the years, but that time is over. I wouldn't have even bought a PS3 if Sony was making a profit on it.

Just goes to show how things can change. Sega was once on top of the world but they made some bad mistakes with their Sega CD, 32X and Saturn fiascos. That cost them a lot of money and customer loyalty. The Dreamcast was a great console (and still is) but with their financial problems and the success of the PS2 it just was not meant to be.

Now here we are with Sony making huge blunders of their own and losing customer loyalty, as well as bleeding money and unlike the Dreamcast their new console is NOT great at all. Then we have the success of the Wii and the PS3 selling poorly even in Japan. I think it's pretty clear their reign as leader has come to an end.

Another problem for SONY and PlayStation 3 is the fact that SONY is already losing money, meaning they can't afford a price drop anytime soon. PS3 is somewhat more advanced than Xbox 360, but not that much to justify the high price of the console.

Back in the day, SEGA made a mistake by NOT implementing a DVD player to the console (although it made perfect sense back then when games were not larger then 1GB). These days, SONY made a mistake by implementing Blu-Ray drive which really isn't necessary for a game console, but is really convenient if you have a HDTV and you wannna watch some HD movies. HDTV is still far from a widespread standard, not to mention how expensive Blu-Ray drive is...

The drop in sales might have something to do with all the illwill Sony garnered over the past year. Anyone that wasn't a diehard fanboi would have been hard pressed to believe Sony's rhetoric about it being the greatest console ever, once PS3 launched.

For a good look at Sony's terrible PR over the past year, take a look at this summary:

We all know Sony has been taking a lot of bad press from the PS3, but lets take a look back at the year that has lead us to the Nov. 17th release date.

Here's a question for people who know. Does the PS3 offer game demo downloads like xbox360 does? One of the things I like about the 360 is that even if I don't want to pay $60 for a game, I can test it out, or even play the demo with my friends, because it can be enough to keep us entertained. Even arcade games can be enough enterainment from the trial versions. Either way, the 360 can be a lot of fun, even without paying a cent on games. It's just a completely all around entertaining box. MS has done a great job of getting developers to support the platform. And bringing lots of forms of entertainment to customers. Especially with a consistent online gaming experience, pay one fee to play any of your games online.

Since I don't have a PS3 I have no idea how well the system provides that level of entertainment, and more for the price. I have read about the online gaming support, and that Sony doesn't feel like being accountable for it, and leaving that up to the publishers/developers to charge gamers and host their games.

MS got this one right. Definately. Sony definately did not.

Sony need to do something about the price, $599 a machine is just too expensive for the wife factor or mom factor.

PS2's North American launch price was $299 in year 2000. I didn't know there was an inflation of 67% (for the 20Gb $499 version) over 6 years or 100% for the 60Gb version.

That's not the problem though, even if inflation would make the PS2 and PS3 the same price. It's that you can also get an Xbox 360 for $399.99 and get basically the same games as the PS3. Plus there's the Wii that's only $249.99, which is selling well too.

A WII is not even in the same class, it's basically a GameCube with a new controller. The graphics capabilities are very last generation, as are the console features. The games I have seen whilst may be fun initially, the novelty will quickly wear off.

Either way, anything the WII can do with the controller, the PS3 can do with the Bluetooth controller and/or the HD Eye Toy.

Joe Average Gamer doesn't buy a console because it's got cutting edge technology, only fanboys buy based on that. Sony has already proved, having the latest technology in itself will not sell consoles. People don't care if the hardware under the hood is so advanced that Sony loses hundreds of dollars on each console. What if Microsoft released a new console that cost $2000 to make, but they sold it for $899? Do you think anyone would buy it, despite the fact Microsoft would lose $1100 on each one? No one would buy it. This is exactly what happened with Sony's PS3. It's too expensive DESPITE the fact that it costs hundreds more to manufacture than the retail price. Anybody remember the 3DO? Same story.

Fun factor is still the king. This is proven by Nintendo yet again. Yes, their hardware is a little outdated, but that doesn't matter. What matters is that it's CHEAP and it's FUN.

People play games to have FUN. The Wii and 360 both offer that for a lot less than Sony's overpriced pile of crap. Oh and the inflation argument was really stupid.

PS3 F*CKEDDDDDDD UP BIGTIME with that PSYCHO price. The failed miserably for that ONE reason. Had Sony matched prices with competition, they would have crushed in the long run. It just goes to show you that just because you have superior technology (heavily superior) built into the console (cell chip, etc. etc..) it doesn't mean jack SH*T if you alienate your potential customers in sooo many other ways.

The Sony BMG rootkit fiasco didn't help either. In fact Sony's had an avalanche of sh*tass luck in 05/06.

Plus, did you actually read my post fully? I guess not. It also concentrated on the fact that there are simply no games really out for the PS3. Not that games are not available, but there is not a huge library at this point.

When all gaming systems come out, they ALL have had this issue, but by the time each of the consoles was a year old, it was well represented them. With the exception of a few (Less then 5) games for both the PS3 and the WII, there are really NONE yet.

Plus the fact that the PS3 alone has been from Firmware 1.x and is now up to version 3.x in less then 3 months. MANY FIXES TO COME AS WELL!

By the way, I'm too lazy to move around while playing a video game, scratch the Wii.

Nintendo's plan was brilliant, $249 for a fun video game system that they actually make money on was perfect to fill in for all those non existent PS3's during November / December.

The 360 sold so well because of all the pissed of PS3 fanboys who couldnt get a console for under 1500 bucks decided to say screw you to Sony and crossed over the dark side.

Whoever leaked that info about a 360 with HDMI and a 120GB hard drive (probably Sony) did a great job of slowing down 360 sales. But if and when the new version arrives, there will be a huge jump once again because of all the people who are waiting for the 360.2

Okay, part of this is logical--look at the US and XBOX 360: Do you think sales of the XBOX 360 will be stronger this week than they were 6 months ago? No--why? Because the 360 enthusiasts already have their 360. In Japan, most who were anxious early adopters already bought the console, so why would anyone wait until now to buy it UNLESS THE PRICE GOT LOWERED? The 360 sales will increase when Halo 3 comes out, no doubt, and when a newer HD-DVD version of the 360 comes in a package or something, it'll sell big as well. PS3 has not had any new exciting games that I've heard about recently, so why would sales increase this week??

Part of it is a little over-criticising of sony, however, some of it is legit as well. This is bad because it means that Sony must do something big to change the PS3 price, parts, games, or accessories, in order to encourage those who simply refuse to pay so much for a console.

Can't raise the price? Offer a free game with the $600 package, offer a second PS3 controller free "this week only", c'mon sony! Be creative. I could care less about PS3 because I dislike sony/bluray/etc., but I don't even care to have a PS3 if someone gives it to me free because I have no use for it--not one game is out that I am interested in. Quit advertising the console and let some people know what games you have on there, I can't remember the name of even one off the top of my head (well, except Resistance: Fall of Man)...

"Another sign of the consoles weakness: In Media Create's list of top-selling games, the first PS3 title, Resistance: Fall of Man, does not appear until number 40. "Wii Sports" took the #1 spot (it is not bundled in the country, unlike in the U.S.)."

There it is folks. That is why the PS3 is not selling. I may not like the console and am 99.9% sure I will never ever buy one, but I still cannot say PS3 is a complete flop until they actually have a game or two that define it. Problem is, there is not yet a super awesomely addictive game exclusively for the PS3 yet, and if I were Sony, I'd do anything and everything to get a super great hit on that console before Halo 3 comes along, because it very well may be the end for the PS3 if nothing big happens between now and then.

Go back to your success, sony: I personally did like a few of the original PS games like the twisted metal franchise and at the time Tekken 2 (albeit Tekken will not likely become a huge success because the idea has been so overly used at this stage). Make a revolutionary game franchise--like Halo for Xbox, like 007 Goldeneye for N64, like Tekken 2 for PS, like GTA for PS2--but come up with a new one. If Sony fails to come up with a mega-hit soon, Halo 3 will surely entice even the most die-hard sony supporting game companies to move over to Xbox 360 for their future titles.

They only mention Xbox360 in small print because it has been out for a year longer and Japan is not it's main market. In the home market of each console, who wins?

But you obviously feel that Xbox 360 news is more important 1 year later.

To be fair let's do a real comparison.

Last year Q4 2005. Xbox 360 sold 1.5 Million units. Q1 2006 - another 3.2 million units.

At the current rate, PS3 would do under 1 million units in it's home market in 2007 Q1. That is terrible.

(sigh) not another misquote from Sony...

...looked at the details myself, and the facts are in: 2 million consoles worldwide have shipped, according to sony. The "misunderstanding" lies in the fact that 1 million shipped in the US, ACCORDING TO THOSE LINKS, yet according to Betanews, only 1 million shipped in Japan. There's the conclusion.

Also these articles get there info from xbit, and here's an interesting quote:
"NPD Research, an independent market tracking agency, recently indicated that back in December there were shipped 1.132 million Xbox 360 game consoles, 604 thousand Nintendo Wii game machines and 490.7 thousand Sony PlayStation 3 much-anticipated game consoles in the USA. The same market tracking agency revealed earlier that in November end-users acquired 195 thousand PlayStation 3 machines. Thus, about 685 thousand of the PS3 game consoles were bought by end-users in calendar 2006, starting from November 17, or about 115 thousand a week. Meanwhile, Sony made available over 140 thousand of PS3s a week on average." -- http://www.xbitlabs.com/...lay/20070116124253.html

Something is rotten here. The numbers I come up with--granted I'm hanging on a limb here--show that nearly one million of the PS3s HAD to have shipped between January 8th and January 16th--that would be a ridiculously 'political' move just so sony could get some extra numbers!

They wasted all of their efforts and money just to cover up the fact that the PS3 did not meet goal for the end of 2006! I guarantee those million consoles started shipping BEFORE the end of the year, making it impossible (assuming I'm doing this right) for sony to have SHIPPED 1 million consoles in 2006--so they basically raised the shipments excessively despite how useless it would be as far as sales and profits just so they could imply that they had met their original goal!

Remember--the trick here is what sony did NOT say--they will never tell you they did wrong because that would mean they weren't gods, so they must tell you 2 million shipped through Jan. 8th (meaning the total - the supposed 1 million would mean that 1 million had to have been shipped from Jan 1st-16th, that Sony simply lied about shipments in December and November, or that Sony had to ramp up production at an ungodly rate of 1,000,000 units in 8 days! If sony is telling us the truth, along with the other numbers we see that over half of the PS3s havent even been sold yet! On top of that, it is close to impossible to ship 1 million in one week + 1 day, yet Sony says they shipped 2 million to date and the raw data shows they only shipped 1.13 million as of January 8th--so who's lying?)

Also, from Tom's: "Although Sony still maintains that it will meet the original expectation of six million units shipped by the end of March, at the close of Sony's fiscal year, Forbes is reporting that Japanese firm Nomura Securities expected that number to be unrealistic, due to sluggish North American sales. Nomura says a more realistic estimate is to only have 4.5 million consoles shipped by April."

Forbes is dead wrong for one reason: they underestimate how incredibly ridiculous lengths Sony will go to in order to cover their mistakes. Why the hell should sony care if it sells or not? Ship 4 billion consoles in the US so they can show the world how great they are, even if only one ten-thousandth of a percent of them are ever purchased!
