PS3 US Sales Stabilize, Wii Sales Drop in March

By Ed Oswald, BetaNews

April 20, 2007, 3:33 PM

Data for the month of March from NPD Group indicates that the PlayStation 3's rapid decline in sales in the US has stabilized, while sales of the Wii are falling back to earth.

For the month, the PS3 sold 130,000 consoles, up about 2 percent from the past month. While the change is statistically insignificant due to it being within the margin of error for the survey, it still shows signs that sales have begun to stabilize.

Nintendo's Wii saw the largest month-to-month drop, selling 259,000 units, down 23 percent from the previous month, matching February's decline percentage-wise. However, it was still good enough for first place by a significant margin over Microsoft's Xbox 360.

The 360 saw a similar drop, with sales in March of 199,000 units. That was down 13 percent from the previous month. However, still strong was the PlayStation 2, with sales of 280,000, down 5 percent.

Of video game titles, the PS2's God of War II, topped the charts, while Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon: Advanced War Fighter and Guitar Hero II, both for Xbox 360, followed in second and third.

Altogether sales of video games, devices, and accessories were $1.1 billion USD in March, up 33 percent year over year.

The PS3 definitely needs to play catch up: http://www.vgchartz.com/?dg=1 With a ~4.5 million unit deficit to the Wii, which released later than it.

However by putting their "trojan horse" the bluray into the PS3, they have definitely won the BluRay Vs HD-DVD battle. This will greatly improve their sales later in the PS3's life cycle. So don't write Sony off just yet.

One thing I would love see stats on is if nintendo shipped more then 259,000 units. I work in a major chain electronics retail store. We generally recieve 4 shipments of 6-15 wii's a month. We always have more then 15 people waiting outside before opening every shipment day whether we get Wii's or not. I really don't see us closing the store with a Wii still on the shelf before summer. Now when it comes to ps3's, all but 1 during the launch week was returned when people failed to get the thousands of dollars they heard they could get on ebay for them. We have sold under 15 ps3's in total since launch and we have not been able to meet a request for a ps3 since december. I don't own either one myself, but I do see the sales of each on a daily basis so I really have to wonder when I see an article like this.

I still think the PS3 looks awesome. Motorstorm looks insane, and I don't usually like racing games. I think what's deterring most would-be buyers is the price tag. Dropping 660USD just to play one game is a pretty big investment for most people.

Steve,

You need to take off that silly Sony cheerleader outfit and become a man. Your one sided opinions are really tired and old. Everything Sony is great and everything Microsoft sucks according to you. Betanews could post a story about a PS3 causing a skyscraper to burn down and you would be in here defending them along with DaveBG.

I thought for a while you were Sony employees but I see your posts are too monosyllabic and juvinile to be anyone with a real job.

FYI, Sony and Microsoft both suck hard. The 360 is a noisy oven and the PS3 is a cheap BD player. You and Dave are sad, pathetic freaks with no social life. What the hell is wrong with you?

You can always spot a complete loser by how seriously they deal with something as stupid as a video game system. You have to be one of those people who has 50 online "freinds" but barely enough gas money to pick up your own paycheck.

You two are just sad retards.

My son plays his GameCube all the time and wants a Wii. im a playstation owner but playstation is no where on top. its behind in handheld and in third in 'next gen' and tied for second.. of out two in new video formats. but its also the only company that competes in all three areas, im under the impression that if the competitors had put a third less r&d into a either area, the products would not have turned out the quality they have. sony is established in the markets they sell to but if they do poorly in one or two areas immediately it doesn't mean that sony is a dieing company..

So far, slightly over 1.3M Wii's sold in the US. Compared to slightly over 500,000 for the PS3. So, basically a 2:1 sales ration. Check IGN and look around. I can find PS3s in tons of stores. Wiis not so easy. More then that, game developers are quickly turning to Wii.

But here's the bigger factor:

Nintendo is MAKING A PROFIT on every Wii it sales. And an average Wii owner has so far spent more then $100 in software, with a part of that being Virtual Console.

Sony is LOSING money on every PS3 it sells.

Who do you think is happier? You're outselling the competition more then 2:1, you're making a profit, or.. you're getting beat up by the competition and you're bleeding money on ever sell.. ?

Oh yeah, and what's that? An even HIGHER priced PS3? Now that Sony is phasing out the 20GB model, you have no choice but to buy the pricier 60G model. I'm sure Microsoft is reeeeal scared of that. Trust me, if Microsoft were scared of the PS3 at all, we would've seen a price drop already. They have a very comfortable lead and they know it. Right now the PS3 is not a threat to Microsoft at all. They know Sony absolutely cannot lower the price of the PS3, in fact, they have to increase it and STILL lose tons of money.

I mean, just look at the numbers from March. The Wii, Xbox360 and the 7 year old PS2 *ALL* outsold the PS3. 'nuff said.

Incase you have problems reading the 360 is still outselling the PS3 even though the PS3 just came out. Also the reason why they made an elite is because there was people complaining about the HDD being to small and no HDMI, so to satisfy their customers(gasp) they gave them what they wanted. For years, people have been asking for bigger HDD and HDMI. Microsoft told them a cable would be available, fanboys pointed to a page on the LikSang website that showed it. Microsoft then told you that no cable was coming, and you had to buy a new console..

People have been asking for HDD upgrades, Microsoft however made you buy propiterry Microsoft HDD's, a 20GB model costing $120, and now $180 for the 120GB upgrade.

- I can download movies and shows on Xbox Live
- Sony removed the Emotion Engine but charges more in Europe
- The graphics are basically the same on the PS3 and 360
- Developers are loosing their faith in the PS3 (here are some games were supposed to be or that started as PS3 exclusives that are now on Xbox 360; Devil May Cry 4, Unreal Tournament 2007, Assassins Creed, Virtual Fighter 4, Fatal Inertia, Grand Theft Auto 4 (now with exclusive episodic content on Xbox Live), Bladestorm: The Hundred Years' War, Final Fantasy, Mercenaries, Ace Combat and Metal Gear Solid 4 is Rumored)

Duh, of course 360 has more games out, it's been out over a year. However if you want to include PS1 and PS2 titles, then PS3 has more.

The Graphics on the PS3 and 360 are CURRENTLY similar (although many games still look better on the PS3, Oblvion for example, looks MUCH better). A year from now, the 360 will have reached it's limit, and the PS3 will be getting better faster..

There's plenty of space for game data on DVD9. If not they can just put it on multiple disc's. Currently all the games are on just one DVD and there’s only one planned so far that’s going to be multiple discs, Unreal Tournament 2007. [And by the way, if there are more multi disc games coming... who cares that's not the point. The point is DVD9 doesn't cripple the 360. Blu-Ray just makes the PS3 $200 more and because Sony wanted to force Blu-Ray upon you.]

And how is talking about how hard it is to program for the PS3 mean that developers aren’t loosing their faith in the PS3?

"Duh, of course 360 has more games out, it's been out over a year."

That was my point. Duh.

"However if you want to include PS1 and PS2 titles, then PS3 has more."

Who cares about PS1 and PS2 games. Isn't that what your PS1 and PS2 is for (which you probably already own)? You don't buy a PS3 to play PS2 and PS1 games.

I still don't think the graphics will get much better on the PS3. Most multi platform games, if not all, will develop for the 360 then will be just port over to the PS3 (most PS3 games will most likely be multi platform too). Just like it was in the PS2 and Xbox 1 days.

By the way there was an Oblivion patch which fixed a few things and also tweaked the graphics for the 360, the same way they did on the PS3, so now there basically the same (I saw in a video from the developer on 1up.com... I can't seem to find it right now, but I'll find it and link it if you really want me to). So now you get the same graphics and content as on the PS3 (the bonus PS3 content 'Nights of the Nine' is available on Xbox Live, plus more expansions) plus now there's Shivering Isle's (currently only available on Xbox 360).

PS3 could lose FFXIII as an exclusive

Also the 360 and PS3 are pretty much equal in power. The 360 has a better GPU and the PS3 has a better CPU. The 360 also has more RAM than the PS3. Any more BS for today?

Its already been proven that games do not have to have life-like graphics to sell, case in point look at the wii. So long as Sony releases the same games as Xbox and doesn't get more exclusives its not going to be going up in sales anytime soon.

Exactly. Lifelike graphics don't mean squat if the game isn't fun. Why do you think WiiPlay outsold every PS3 game by big margins even though it has graphics that could have probably been done on a PS1?

Funny how Steve Austin's entire comment in a Sony article is about Microsoft. "Wii Sales Drop in March" is actually better news than "PS3 US Sales Stabilize" since the Wii is still outselling the PS3, even after the sales drop. I guess when you only see negative Sony news, it's easier to just bash Microsoft.

Yeah, you're assuming quite a bit there. First, will Sony's gaming division even be around in three year's time? As it stands, it doesn't look good and it's definitely debatable. Second, a $120 PS3 in three years? In your wet Sony dreams. I doubt very much the PS3 will drop below $199 during the entire cycle of the product, so $120 is completely out of the question. I would go as far as saying that $199 in 5 years is a pipe dream too.

http://asia.news.yahoo.com/070412/3/308pe.html

As for the price, of course it will drop that low eventually. The PS3 is no more expensive that the PS2 was when it launched in 2000, it's now $80..

based on your comments, it's obvious you have no idea how the industry works.

With the backwards compatability, PS2 owners today will be buying PS3's in a few years time. There is little to argue that fact.

"The PS3 is no more expensive that the PS2 was when it launched in 2000, it's now $80."

What are you smoking? No console in the history of video gaming has cost $599 before, with the exception of maybe the 3DO, which flopped almost immediately. It took 7 years for the PS2 to drop to $80. The PS3 has almost no chance of surviving 7 years, no matter how you look at it.

"With the backwards compatability, PS2 owners today will be buying PS3's in a few years time. There is little to argue that fact."

What backwards compatibility? Sony removed hardware emulation and replaced it with a crappy software emulator. No one in their right mind will buy a PS3 in hopes of playing old PS2 games on it.

Oh and that link you gave doesn't mean anything. Forecasting profits is just a guessing game. Kind of like when Sony "forecast" 6 million PS3 shipped by the end of March. They barely shipped half that. Let me quote a few things from your article, with the important phrases highlighted.

"Sony Corp. will likely see its operating profit rise more than fivefold"

"Sony's group sales are expected to rise 6 percent"

"Sony should enjoy increased demand for its liquid crystal display"

"But the biggest boost should come from its game division, which is expected to book an operating loss of 200 billion yen in the past business year"

"Sony will boost PS3 shipments in 2007/08 by about 67 percent to 10 million units, and should also benefit from better semiconductor production yields"

"The newspaper said Sony should be able to post a group operating profit"

That's a whole lot of "should" and "expected", isn't it? I love how they say Sony will ship 10 million PS3s by 2008. They could ship 100 million of them, it won't matter. People simply will not buy a $599 console. Get that through your thick skulls already.

Uh...the PS3 is exactly 100% more expensive then the PS2 when it launched...I know sony fanboys like to spout off some inaccurate information to try to improve the perception of their beloved company...but outright obvious lying, c'mon now this is a new low!

"With the backwards compatability, PS2 owners today will be buying PS3's in a few years time. There is little to argue that fact. "

LOL...yea, in 5 years time I'm going to want to get a PS3 because it can play my 10 year old PS2 games (afterall, that's the reason I bought a PS2 two years ago right? Because it can play my 7 year old PS1 games! yea sure that's the reason)...lol that is a great argument right there. By then what will the PS4 look like? 500 cell3 processors with 200 graphixcell gpu's in a box the size of my 56" tv? I can see it now...hey guess what guys! Sony developed the most powerfull gaming console ever made! Granted, nobody will ever be able to make anything for it unless they spend $10 billion/game, but it is the most powerfull system on the planet! And it will play you'r 15 year old PS2 games and some of those PS3 games! Get it now, only $5000 for the economy version with half the procs disabled!

You might of heard of inflation. There has been some of it since the PS1 in 95 and the PS2 in 2000.

Go back and redo your sums.

OK, so the PS2 is less than the PS3 even after factoring inflation, but not that much. ($399). PS3 is $499.

- From the frauds who brought you 'Hydra', fake fan websites and all the rest of their long long track record of BS that really is f**king rich indeed.

I just hope the public treat them to the obvious and clear condescending derision and contempt they obviously hold us in.

.....and btw it is true they are are not selling in Europe.

Just like everywhere else there was a short fanboy rush slightly boosted by the a/v fans after the cheapest & best spec'd BD player then tumbleweed time.

UK sales alone fell off of a cliff and have remainded there.

(love the sarcasm at the end of this report)

Research firm Chart Track shows that PS3 sales dropped the three weeks in a row after the game console went on sale in the UK. The press in that country has even suggested that Sony needs to cut price to pick up customers.

Over at Sony, the CEO says that the Playstation 3 launch in Europe is a clear success. The record-breaking success of the PlayStation 3 in Europe has rescued the games console from “the perception wars” that hit sales in Japan, says Sir Howard Stringer, he told the FT.

Maybe sales in Switzerland were good enough to make up for the short-fall in the UK.

Wrong! [Like the scene in the Superman movie.]

First the Wii has graphics that are slightly better than the Xbox 1.

Second of all graphics doesn't mean that there in the same market. Nintendo games are totally different compared to PlayStation games. You can’t get Mario, Zelda, Metroid etc on PlayStation. Plus there’s the Wii remote witch is totally different than any PS controller. The Wii and PS2 are far from being in the same market.

You just helped confirmed that you are a fool.
