PS3 sales triple in November, Wii shortage continues

By Nate Mook, BetaNews

November 27, 2007, 7:24 PM

Sales of the PlayStation 3 have rocketed 298 percent since Sony introduced its cheaper $399 40GB model on November 2, but much of that boost may be attributed to Black Friday, when such increases are typical.

The news follows a similar positive week in Japan, where the PS3 outsold Nintendo's Wii for the first time. Still, Sony has a long road ahead if it hopes to catch up to the Wii globally; Nintendo has sold twice as many consoles as its Japanese rival.

Ironically, the Nintendo Wii's success -- which has also put it past the Xbox 360 in sales -- could further aid Sony this holiday season. Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime said he spent Black Friday scouring retail stores for Wii units, and failed to find any available. The company already increased its production to 1.8 million Wiis a month, but that won't be enough to meet demand.

That means those in the market for a Wii this holiday could opt for a PS3 instead thanks to a dearth of Sony's console available in both 40GB and the pricier 80GB models. Microsoft is also making sure Xbox 360s remain on store shelves this holiday, and has introduced a new "Arcade" bundle to entice potential Wii buyers.

Surprisingly, Sony's PlayStation 2 is still selling well; the seven-year-old device saw a sales boost of 287 percent for Thanksgiving week in the United States. Although it wants gamers to plunk down $400 or more for a PS3, Sony seems to recognize that the PS2 still has some life left in it and recently unveiled an updated version of the console in Japan.

Who'd believe any Sony claims?

They have already been caught lying about their numbers this year.

"Nov 16th 2007

Earlier this week, we reported on an Associated Press story, which seemed to indicate that the PlayStation 3 was finally on a nice sales pace after the introduction of the $399 model. GameDaily BIZ and other media outlets were led to believe that Sony CEO Howard Stringer's 100,000 sold figure for the week ending November 11 was specific to the PS3. Apparently it was not.

Bloomberg.com found out from Sony Computer Entertainment corporate spokesperson Kimberly Otzman that the 100,000 actually was inclusive of all PlayStation consoles, which we would assume means PS2 and PSP as well – not so impressive.

We've followed up with Otzman for further clarification and to inquire about an actual PS3 specific sales total. In a release regarding the PS3's birthday earlier today, Sony did note that "since the availability of the new 40GB and 80GB PS3 models, sales have increased by 192% at the top 10 retailers in North America."

http://www.gamedaily.com...-so-big-after-all/18578/

PS3 sales did rise a little but they have now flattened off again

(and since it's launch the PS3 has trailed the Wii & the XBox 360, firmly stuck in 3rd place).

[UPDATE] And round and round we go. Now we ARE back to 100,000 for PS3 only. Kimberly Otzman has contacted us to clarify the sales total. She said she was misquoted in Bloomberg.

Sweet PS3 deal here.

The high price is deterring the domination sony intended to achieve, and this proves it.

Christmas is a big event, and parents want to give their kids the world, and if there is a point in the year when you can spend this amount on a games system then this is it.

This is not the steady rise and eventual domination, rather the yearly extravagance parents do to please their children. I Expect sales numbers to sharply decline in January and fall behind Nintendo and Microsoft's consoles and follow this trend for the rest of the year.

Im a happy PC Gamer and enthusiast, and have no plans to buy any console, but im getting some interest from the kids who are all dropping hints for the Wii.

Good games are what we want, and they sell consoles. Right now the price is the killer.

I'll give the PS3 a chance, but that will be next year when the good games are out. Never mind what Davey claims that there are good games out already, they are all bull sh!t or multi-platform games. I'm still waiting on GT5, although Sony's Achilles heal for me will be the lack of backwards compatibility. I hope I can still find a 60 gig PS3 next year.

Problem with your statement is there are really no good games for PS3 yet Nintendo's making a profit both on games and the console.

While PS3 might, and thats a big might, catch up. The fact the Wii is still hard to a year after its released speaks volumes for its true worth.

Put a good advertising, good software from big companies, and quality first-party games and you have a killer on your hands.

Lets be honest....

PS3 is only being purchase because its a cheap blue-ray player that happens to play quality video games for the kids.

$200 - Blue-Ray Player for the framily
$200 - Playstation Console for the kids

= $400 Quality Family Entertainment for the Holidays.

I think you need to relook, there are plenty of great games for the PS3 this season.

R&C Tools OF Destruction (truely fantastic game)
Unchartered Drakes Fortune
Unreal Tournement 3
Lair (if that's your thing, it's still a great game, despite some reviewers not getting it).
Gran Turismo 5 Prologue
Orange Box
Warhawk

Even the launch titles Resistance and Motorstorm still hold up.

And some multi-platform games (with better online with the 360):
Call of Duty 4
Ace Combat 6
Virtal Fighter 5 (Online only on Xbox)
Rock Band
Assassin's Creed
Orange Box
The Darkness
Unreal Tourn'a'ment 3 (Coming Soon)

Uncharted the jaggie game, took it back

Lair you are kidding that sucks major *&^. Even reviewers at PSM said that one was a turd.
Gran T who cares
Orange box have it for the PC plus it is on the 360 already
Warhawk online only and not very good.

My God what a pathetic list you have there. Resistance is alright if you like brown games and Motorstorm is the only game I would play but not for very long, just not interesting enough for me.

You really are a desperate idiot. Keep trying to fight the good fight it is laughable at best.

Apparently Nintendo didn't learn from Sony's mistakes last year regarding supply and demand. And Sony can afford to sell the consoles at a loss. They will easily make it up in games. Sort of like Lexmark selling printers. They could give them away and rake in the profits with toner.

Score: 0

By Hollywood__

Nintendo knows exactly what they are doing with supply. If you keep a high demand product basically non existent, the demand will stay hogh.

As soon as Sony flooded the streets with PS3's last year, no onw wanted one anymore.

It's not a mistake by Nontendo, they know most Wi''s are bought up to scalp on eBay and they have found the right formula to keep the game going.

They dont care if they end up on eBay because they make money with every console sale. When PS3's were going for $1000 on eBay, not only was Sony losing on every console but I'm sure a lot of the people buying them didn't have a lot left over for games and accessories.

Only people with lots of disposable income buy whatever they want at any price.

If you want another great example of fake demand and low supply, try buying those Pixar die-cast cars. Matell produces just enough to feed the eBay scalpers and keeps the perceived high demand alive since June 2006, it's the hottest selling die cast line in history.

All consoles lose Money, all the profit is in the Software (Games).

When I worked my last Retail job was aroudn when the PS2 came out. I looked up "Employee Price". PS2 retailed for $200 and even then we said "$200 for a Game Colsole???" Well employee price on it was "$212" (Yea, $12 MORE then the Shelf Price), but when I Looked @ the price of the games which were $50 each (Shelf), employee price on them was only $9.

So regardless of weather the PS3 sells for $599, the 360 Sells for $479 or the WII sells for $249, each Console loses $$$. Once you have the Hardware (Console) you ONLY need the Software (Games).

I grant that hardcore gamers that are not MODDING their systems and truly spending $$$ on the game have upward of 25 - 50 games. 25 - 50 games per consumer means MEGA $$$!

Sony makes Money on EVERYTHING that has the PS3 logo on it. Christ, you have to pay 10k as a software developer for the PS3 SDK from them and that is more or less a product less sale!

Ninendo Wii attach rates are truely dire. With most Wii owners never venturing outside Wii Sports.

The 360 has a slightly better attach rate that the PS3 (PS3 = 4.7, 360 = 6 ), but then it's been out a year longer. At the 1 year mark the 360 attach rate was 3.5

So acually, of all the current consoles, the PS3 is acually the best attach rate.
