Paid Google ad appears to state McCain picked Lieberman

By Scott M. Fulton, III, BetaNews

August 28, 2008, 4:11 PM

A Google AdWords ad first spotted by BetaNews contributor Sharon Fisher, along with ads for the McCain campaign that have appeared today on BetaNews and elsewhere through Google, appear on first glance to have spoiled McCain's VP pick.

Groups of politically-minded bloggers, including the DaniWeb IT community, have been noting today a peculiar jump today in the number of online ads, appearing in BetaNews and elsewhere, showing presumptive Republican presidential nominee Sen. John McCain alongside former Democratic vice presidential candidate Sen. Joe Lieberman.

One of the members of that community is our frequent BetaNews colleague and analyst Sharon Fisher, who brought to our attention this afternoon what appeared to be a paid Google AdWords ad, linking directly to Sen. McCain's campaign Web site, along with this phrase: "Senator Lieberman Joins McCain's Team. Learn Why You Should Join!"

Was this an inadvertent leak, by way of a poorly timed Google AdWords campaign, stating that McCain had chosen Lieberman as his running mate? A representative of the McCain campaign who did not wish to be identified, told BetaNews this afternoon that he, too, was able to pull up the AdWords link on Google, and that the ad itself appeared to be a legitimate one.

Google ad appearing to show McCain Lieberman choice

However, he noted, it appeared to have been launched after Lieberman officially joined McCain's campaign effort last February, helping to organize a division of the campaign called Citizens for McCain. Lieberman currently serves in the US Senate as an independent, having dropped his Democratic party affiliation in his last bid for re-election to the Senate in 2006.

The AdWords ad links to the URL, JohnMcCain.com/lieberman. When Sharon first brought the ad to our attention at 3:10 pm EDT, clicking on this link took us to the McCain campaign's home page. By 3:30, the link was not resolvable, bringing up a custom 404 page. Then at 3:50, the link was redirected to citizens.johnmccain.com, which is indeed the home page for the Citizens for McCain effort.

Successive tries to pull up the AdWords ad on Google since 3:50 pm have failed.

Sorry,

He picked a MILF with a pregnant wh*** for a daughter. They are going to find out every single thing about this woman and she will end up having a nervous breakdown.

Good news for the Dems. Obama probably will be our next president. The problem is I will benefit with McCain in the white house. The GOP loves to give breaks to people with 6 figure salaries and bend over the regular 9-5 Joe's.

There is a good reason why the world was shocked that McCain picked Palin: she isn't even close to being qualifed for the job. Take a look at her background, her experience and her training. She is barely even qualified to be the Gov. of Alaska, let alone the VP of the US.

Most people are saying now that she isn't even his real choice and that she was just a place holding "sacraficial lamb" chosen by McCain just to steal the thunder from Obama's hugely successful 84,000 attendee speach at Mile High Stadium. She will likely be allowed to remain on the ticket until the end of the RNC and then will remove herself from the ticket for unexplained "personal reasons" allowing McCain a face-saving way out to then choose a real running mate that is actually qualified for the job. They won't keep her around much longer than the convention though because they know that Biden would absolutely destroy her in a live, one-on-one televised debate and they aren't about to let that happen.

This was just a well orchastrated ploy to buy McCain some more time to find his real VP choice. Remember, McCain has Carl Rove working on his campaign and this is exactly the type of smooth, shrewd tactic he would use to put things to his maximum advantage.

This is likely how this will play out because absolutely anyone who looks at Palin knows beyone the shadow of a doubt that she has no business what so ever being on a VP ticket with anyone.

Odd. Comparing Palins supposed "lack" of experience against some paltry experience on the TOP of the democratic ticket?

She's got more executive time than all three dudes combined. But whatever makes you feel manlier.

yeah, she's just going along for the ride as mccains "trophy" girl.

no doubt we will be hearing that mccain reminds her of the father she never had.

if mccain does become prez, then no doubt he will ask her to just sit there and look pretty. there's alot of complicated stuff he has got to do.

Funny website name, you were entirely wrong.

n terms of team appeal, Joe Liberman would be my popular choice. The experts see it differently. I live in NY, so I know who Joe is, but the rest of the country might not associate. I think he picked the unknown Gov of Minn.

This is 100% false.

Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin

Republicans will get a women into the White House before the Demons.

s. palin is a hypocrite and was not j.mccain's primary choice for a variety of reasons.

based on mccains voting history, j. palin is not entitled to equal pay as a v.p.

Lieberman is not a Republican. I am openly setting myself up right now for ridicule if I'm wrong, but would like to state that as the republican candidate, McCain will pick a Republican running mate.

This a very-well planned and though out campaign ploy by the McCain campaign to "leak" the name of his vice-presidential running mate on the very night his opponent is giving his acceptance speech at the Democratic Convention.

By leaking the name, it will force the news media to cover the story, thereby drawing their attention away from - and ensuring they split their coverage of- the big speech at the convention, as they begin to discuss the possible ramifications of McCain's choice even before it has been officially announced.

This is no haphazard "leak". It's a well-timed strategic move by the McCain campaign.

actually your wrong.. the best time to let the public know would be 9-11am EST on Friday... this will take a lot of wind out the sales of the obama's wanna-be speech last night... Leaking it right after Obama's speech (within hours) would be stupid...

That's funny...I actually almost laughed. It's as if you're saying the McCain campaign isn't the one that started all the attacks...oh wait you probably are saying that....that's sad. Maybe you should come out from under your rock? Oh but then Bush might listen in to your phone conversations...never mind get back under that rock and keep thinking the Bush/McCain policies have been great that last 8 years.

I would frankly be shocked if this turns out true. Mr. McCain is in a bad spot. If he picks Lieberman, he runs the risk of losing the conservative base. He picks Romney, it could be a field day for Dems based on the choice words Romney had for McCain during the primaries.

Pawlenty anyone? :D

I make around 60k a year. I have not had one problem with the direction of the country because I have adjusted to the world economy fueled mostly by supply and demand concerns, stupid loan practices by banks and misguided alternative fuels that have increased prices in the food area.

If you cant learn to adjust and make you own life rather than blame others for not making yours better, perhaps you need a long look in the mirror?
