Palm denies its online store is new, stays quiet on Linux rumors

A Palm spokesperson today disputed published reports that the company is launching a brand new online software store. Less vigor, however, was devoted to rumors that Palm will introduce its long-planned Linux-based Foleo OS at CES.

Contrary to reports stating that Palm is following the lead of Apple and Google in launching a new applications store, Palm has actually been running an online store for quite some time, a company spokesperson told BetaNews today.

"We've now updated the look of our landing page. But the content is exactly the same as before," elaborated Palm spokesperson Leslie Letts.

Content on the site currently consists of downloadable applications for Palm mobile devices running both Palm OS and Windows Mobile. The online store's new UI [user interface] does include a new icon which can be downloaded to a device, for later access to the store simply by clicking.

"You were always able to download applications to a mobile device, anyway. But before, you had to type in the [store's] URL," BetaNews was told.

Will future content for Palm's application store contain Linux software, too? Letts wouldn't comment on that question, nor on reports that Palm will roll out its Linux-based Foleo OS plus a series of Linux-enabled devices at CES 2009 in January.

She did confirm, however, that Palm will be unveiling new products during its press conference at the show in Las Vegas.
