Pink Zune Outselling White, Brown

By BetaNews Staff, BetaNews

Microsoft may have found a way to better compete with Apple's ubiquitous iPod: the color pink. Since introducing the limited edition pink Zune before Mother's Day, the color has become the second most popular, only trailing black in sales, the company said Thursday.

The Zune is still struggling to gain market share, however, with the device holding steady at 9.2 percent of the retail market in April, according to data release from NPD Group. Microsoft has long said its music player strategy is long-term, and the company is rumored to be working on a second-generation Zune in response to feedback and gripes from customers.

Everyone keeps claiming the Zunes bigger screen as a superiority factor over the iPod. I really can't see a whole half an inch as being very superior. 2.5 in....3 in.. they both suck for watching videos and movies. Video playback on a device like an iPod or Zune is pretty much a useless feature.

And quite a bit larger CarLox. Not to mention a 4BG Memory Stick costs as much an a iPod. Get a 4GB Sansa, it weighs about two ounces, has an FM radio built in and actually sounds better than the iPod. They are $99.00US and it's pretty much all I use.

I gave the iPod to the wife and she leaves it in the SUV plugged into the direct control cable for the factory radio. The iPod is a POS in my opinion.

I still don't have or ever plan on buying a Zune so I can't comment on sound but I'm laughing about the a******s who paid 700+ dollars for the pink Zunes on Ebay back at Christmas time. MS said they will only make 100 pink Zunes, ever. Once they're gone blah blah blah..... bunch of liars.

IMO Zune's better than IPOD just because it is not an Apple product. I can't stand people staring at Apple like at a god-like company, almost like sectarians. By the way, Zune is a Toshiba product and Microsoft has just ordered its production. It has a bigger screen, its battery lives longer, it interacts better with windows (yes, I'm a PC user, not a Mac freak).

to Program86: saying that someone is fool just because he buys another player than you is IMO stupid...

If the NPD groups survey cited in this story is even close to being accurate there are many people buying these thing. Even 5% market share wouldn't be bad for a product that has only been out for about 7 months.

"Even 5% market share wouldn't be bad for a product that has only been out for about 7 months."

Agreed.

I'm sure the Zune will gain more of a market share once new, improved models become available.

One giant step Microsoft ought to take is in putting more of an effort into wooing third-party companies, e.g., Bose, auto manufactures (BMW, and Audi to name a two), Precor (as well as other makers of fitness machines), away from Apple's ubiquitous clutches.

I totally like my zune as well. I think it is easier to deal with than a Ipod and I also dont have to deal with the sucky Itunes software.

I agree, I love my (brown) Zune. It integrates so well with Windows, and I love having the freedom to shop at different stores like URGE. iTunes is too inclusive and exclusive, I don't like iTunes the store and software. And I can't wait for the 2nd gen Zune.
