PlayStation Network video store opens

PlayStation 3 users are now able to rent or purchase movie and television content from the PlayStation Store, delivered both in standard and high definition.

Through partnerships with MGM, 20th Century Fox, Lionsgate, Disney, Sony Pictures Entertainment, Warner Bros., Paramount, and Turner Entertainment, PS3 users have access to over 300 movies and 1,200 television episodes.

Supporting the new, converged PlayStation Network and PlayStation Underground ID as well as each individually, PlayStation Store content begins at $1.99. Rentals are between $2.99 and $5.99 depending on picture quality, and have a shelf life of two weeks. Once the file has been opened to watch, however, it must be watched within 24 hours. Movie purchases range between $9.99 and $14.99.

Currently, videos purchased through the PlayStation Store on a PS3 can be transferred to the PSP for remote viewing. But what about PSP users who don't own a PS3? The PSP's system software was updated to version 4.05 yesterday, but did not add the ability to directly download content from the PlayStation Store to the PSP.

Content purchased in the PlayStation Store on a PC requires a downloader application to move it from the desktop to the USB-connected PSP.
