Some Zunes being anti-social due to glitches

By Ed Oswald, BetaNews

While it is to be expected, users of Microsoft's newest Zunes are seeing some sporadic problems with both the players and the service.

New product launches are never immune to growing pains and glitches, and the latest Zunes are certainly no exception. Within 48 hours of their launch, reports of problems have surfaced across the Web.

None of the problems seem to be show-stoppers, but annoying enough that it is causing some Zune owners frustration when using the device. Most reports seem to center around a digital rights management issue that is preventing some from downloading songs from the revised Zune Marketplace.

Users say that while the music isn't downloading, in some cases the Zune marketplace is still charging them for the download. The problems have even apparently been enough for users to create DIY's for how to rollback the software and firmware.

Such instructions appeared Thursday on the Zuneboards Web site, which appears to advise to do nothing more than a System Restore.

A lot of the problems seem to center around those early adopters who have upgraded first generation players. Microsoft's official Zune forums were well populated with these users, complaining about issues ranging from corrupted library metadata (another popular problem) to a mysterious "missing package" error.

So far, Microsoft has not publicly commented on the Zune issues.

Uh, almost every kind of tech gadget you get will have copies that malfunction. The bugs get patched.

This is news because?

holy hell. whats up with all the fanboyism here?

I think you all need to grow the F up already. The Zune is a kickass product (guess that means I love MS, right?)

A lot of new devices have initial problems that get patched quickly, it just comes with the industry.

Again, you all need to grow up.

Unfortunantly they didn't see fit to patch that erroneous charge from appearing on my bill now did they?

Holy crap! Now I know where that 21 dollar charge came from!! Am I going to be held liable for that charge or is Microsoft going to rectify it?

I spent 8hrs plus on new software
upgrade for the origanl zune 30.

Here are my recomendations

First have patience and wait for upgrade to be fixed.

second set a restore point for the time just before the download.
Do not plug your zune in. If you take
all the the references for sync and library out of your software it wont
matter. then download the software
If you have a mess in your metadate and duplicate songs on wrong albums
stop.

Go to the website for zune support spend some time reading.

If you cant do what is provided for
support do this.

Go into safe mode and use system restore to go back to the restore point you made before you started.
Safet mode is always the best way to restore your system.

Most of the problems with the software are problems I had with original software.

The only process for ripping that worked for me was making sure that title artist and date were entered correctly while it was ripping. you can edit the original software on the fly...not the new one you have to jump into win explorer.

I set my 30 original software so it would not auto sync.

I have over 20 years experience with
computers.

When on earth are manufacts going to
get it together.

An 30 gig hd is a database, thats all i want is for it to work the first time. all the bells and whistles can be added later. If ms tested this software out before release they must have known it was
buggy.

There isn't much noise from them or the net but its growing

jwt says thanks

Then 3-4 times a week stop everything you are doing take ipod back to itunes as ipod is frozen (again)and hope when it syncs back to itunes you don't have to do a restore, sorry Apple isn't perfect either.

It's common enough for this:

LOL! I just said and have stated that I use BOTH yet I am a MS Drone?

Do a search there is sites dedicated to the Ipod freezing and its even listed on the Apple site.

It JUST came out, the new Zune is a MS product its not a rebadged toshiba (like the Zune 1 was)so essentially its understandable as its technically a new product from the ground up. All products new and old will have problems there is no such thing as a perfect release.

The fact you are on here (again) posting on a product you repeatedly express you don't like is quite sad.

We need to keep politically correct when refering to those that are on the special side.

Reference table:
trolls = learning disabled
jackasses = emotionally disturbed
newbies = behaviorally challenged
sony fans = blind
Linux fans = confused
blue-ray = mentally impaired
Mac = unresolved emotional issues
Microsoft = bullies on the playground

not to offend, but to poke fun.

Congratulations, you are the first defender of zune I've ever seen in my life. Or are you just defending Microsoft? Either way, you should be embarrassed and ashamed by your favorite company.
