Sony Ericsson unveils Xperia X2

When Microsoft announced yesterday that "Windows Phones" would be coming on October 6th, it didn't name specific phone models, but instead listed manufacturers and the mobile network operators that would be carrying them. Sony Ericsson Xperia X2 Today however, joint venture Sony Ericsson announced the sequel to its powerful and pricey Xperia X1 handset will be a "Windows Phone," the Windows Mobile 6.5-powered Xperia X2.

This shouldn't be much of a surprise, as the upgrade is as predictable as the name would imply. The Xperia X1 ran Windows Mobile 6.1 and was actually the company's first Windows Mobile device. It featured a unique "panel-based" touch interface, a QWERTY keyboard, a 3" VGA touchscreen with handwriting recognition, and a 3.2 megapixel camera, 30 fps VGA video recording, and Memory Stick Micro (M2) storage up to 8GB.

The X2 has kept the Touchscreen/QWERTY slider design, bumped up to the newest Windows Mobile, kept the panel interface (though it now comes with 13 pre-loaded panels,) upgraded the camera to 8.1 megapixels, and ditched M2 in favor of MicroSD up to 16GB. It will come in two versions: both will support GSM/GPRS/EDGE and UMTS, but one model with support HSPA 850, and the other will support HSPA 900.

Later today, Sony Ericsson will publish the full specs in the Xperiances blog where we will get to find out (hopefully) what is powering this device and how much it will cost. The Xperia X1 is equipped with a respectable 528 MHz ARM 11/QDSP-5 and had a frightening MSRP of $799.

"and ditched M2 in favor of MicroSD up to 16GB"

compared to what?

I hate to break this to you, but the X1 already supports MicroSD (16GB max)

Just another unnesserary toy..for most... Of course, if you're an executive-type or get paid off-hours to take care of biz, then any price would be justified -- this biz tool would pay for itself in no time. Personally, I bet it's gonna be slow as sheeeit still. I'd wait a year or two before these thingies get responsive enough.

I hope within 2 years Apple will release an iPhone with built-in QWERTY keyboard *or* bluetooth drivers for input devices so other manufacturers could come in and make tiny keyboards that you'd carry in your OTHER pocket (which is probably even better than a slide-out keyboard). If that bluetooth keyboard has a large enough battery, it could power and double as a bluetooth earphone that you'd disconnect from the device temporarily.

Ok, add an App-store with a decent community of developers and I will jump that train in a heartbeat.

Other than combining the top row of letters with the numbers, it looks damned near perfect. They could also stand to get rid of the buttons at the bottom.

Because they can! How many 13.3" laptops that weight around 3.3 lbs that come with blue, 6 GB of DDR3 RAM, 320 GB 7200 RPM hard drive, and a P9700 2.8 GHz processor along with integrated and dedicated video memory for $2,500? If you know of a manufacturer that would, please point me in the right direction because I haven't seen a similiar laptop like this.

Why on Earth does Sony charge so much for their gear? $800 phones, netbooks that hit four figures, and run-of-the-mill notebooks for $3000? I know a lot of people complain that Apple charges a premium, but sheesh. No phone is worth 800 bucks unless it can do my work without my needing to ask, cook my breakfast, and see into the future.

You want an iPhone...but it can only do ONE thing at a time!

I still cannot afford the iPhone and Sony wants me to shell out $800 for their phone? That price is ridiculous! I'm cheap and admit it and would love for cell providers to give their phone for free and charge under $100 for a high end phone like the iPhone or BB. These companies are making a killing on service along and now with the require data plan who know where the ceiling is.
