Sony announces cheaper PS2 as expected

This morning, Sony has officially reduced the price of the PlayStation 2 to $99.99, confirming rumors that the nine-year old console would finally hit the "sweet spot" in price on April 1.
In Sony's announcement today, the company noted that the PlayStation 2's library of titles will grow to almost 1,900, an impressive total by any metric. The fact that it is still able to grow is especially remarkable when considering the console's proximity to retirement.
John Koller, director of hardware marketing at SCEA, said, "With this new price, we intend to introduce a new generation of consumers -- some of whom weren't even alive when the system was first introduced in 2000."
While this means the vast library of games will remain accessible to the public, (since the PlayStation 3 lacks backward compatibility), the community of PS3 users were less than enthused by this announcement. This was no doubt, thanks to rumor-fueled hopes of a new firmware update or price reduction to Sony's newer console.
How can Sony be so out of touch with reality? Who give a f*** about a PS2 cut...they need a PS3 cut

|Lol...good work Sony. I understand you are interested in luring customers to your soon-to-be-obsolete PS2. Thats all good and swell, but what happens when they want to upgrade and they go out and buy that PS3 with all good intention of playing their PS2 titles, only to realize that you screwed them by removing Backwards Compatibility.

|They'll simply keep on playing it on their PS2, OBVIOUSLY. How in the hell did you think everyone coped before backwards compatibility? Use your brains.

|When one of the big features of the ps3 was that graphics would be upgraded and all games would be playable to be removed as a feature that's why...I don't know about you but its nice to be able to upgrade and still not lose what you had previously

|Not shocked at all that the PS3 community was unhappy. They have been rattling their collective sabres for months over a price drop on the PS3.

|yea you forget these same blohards in that same community claim games are perfect (when better games are out there) Sorry I've played their self proclaimed perfect shooter (killzone 2) sorry again there are SUPERIOR and MUCH BETTER games out there.. To call this perfect or claim that titles on an OBSOLETE console will further your consumer base is LOL at the least. Your just trying to offset your losses in this quarter by little or no means.
