Sony Drops Prices, Confirms 40GB PS3

Sony confirmed the speculation Thursday, officially announcing a 40GB PS3 model for the United States, which will be available for $399 USD on November 2. The 40GB model already made its debut in Europe and Japan. In addition, the company made a surprise price drop on its 80GB model, which will now run $499 USD.

The price cuts come as retailers prepare to gear up for the holiday season, and as supplies for Sony's discontinued $499 60GB PS3 dry up. The 40GB PS3 has no backwards compatibility with PlayStation 2 games, while the 80GB model has "limited" support. Sony has bundled Spider-Man 3 in Blu-ray format with the 40GB PS3.

This expensive white elephant is the tank of the decade.

The XBox360 and Wii destroyed any chance it had by providing more fun, more value and less unfulfilled hype for less money.

Look at the huge list of cross platform games. Then there is the great AAA titles like Lair, oh yeah it sucks. Then you have heavenly Sword which is good but only for about 5 hours then it's over. Some of those games you listed no matter how you paint them suck.

You also seem to think that the PS3 is the only system on the market that has exclusive titles. The previews of Killzone say it looks real nice but beyond that its a pass. Like I said huge list of games you can get on other systems. The Sony list of killer titles has dropped drasitcally since the PS2 has faded into the hostory books. At one time Sony had some great exclusive titles but those days seem to be ending.

I just wanted to say that you shouldn't get something based on what other people say. If you like or want to get something, then get it, simple as that.

I myself had the very first PlayStation before XBOX even existed (it was a gift), so naturally I'm going to upgrade to PS2 and PS3 (and no, I'm not a fanboy just because I have a PS, and I'm not bashing either system). So, why am I going to waste my money on a system that can't play my PS1 and PS2 games? If I hadn't been given a PS, maybe I would have an XBOX, but whatever. Furthermore, I don't have any Blu-Ray movies yet because I care more about gaming than the Blu-Ray capabilites, though I'd like to try Blu-Ray sometime.

Anyway, it's pointless to fight back and forth between XBOX and PS3 already.. someone will always have something to say about each system, so just get whichever one you think is best for you or that you prefer.

Why do you need a system to play your PSone and PS2 games if you already have those systems? You should get both systems (Xbox 360 and PS3, it sounds like you already own the PS3). I think you'll be missing out on a lot of good games if you stay with only the PS3.

No, but he practically single-handedly designed the PS3... and a piss poor design it was (and still is).

His brainchild reminds me of the failed Philips CD-i years ago... overpriced and overhyped, still. So was the 3D0, but at least it had some killer games. Gaming seems almost like an afterthought with the PS3.

Since you can't read here's the story:

Sony VP of Advanced Technologies Don Eklund spoke at yesterday’s HDTV DisplaySearch conference in Universal City, California. During the panel discussion, Eklund mentioned that the Playstation 3 will be receiving a firmware update that will enhance Blu-Ray interactivity. He didn’t go much beyond that, not giving a release date or even details about what would be added.

It looks like the firmware update will add at least some components of Blu-Ray Disc Profile 1.1, which all new Blu-Ray players are mandated to include if introduced after the end of this month. With Profile 1.1, players will be able to make use of onboard memory (minimum 256MB is required) to store audio/video data and title updates. Profile 1.1 also adds secondary video and audio decoders for Picture-in-Picture viewing and interactive audio commentary.

The PS3 obviously has the hardware to do all this, so it’s not too much of a stretch for it to be updated via firmware. What will be surprising is if this happens right when Profile 1.1 is mandated on November 1. If that happens, the Playstation 3 will be the only Profile 1.1 player for quite some time; the only other announced players as of now are Denon’s Blu-Ray players that have MSRP’s in the $1200-2000 range, scheduled to be released in Q1 2008.

According to the latest version of PlayStation.com’s User Agreement, a new firmware version 2.0 will go live at the end of this month.

This firmware update should solidify Playstation 3’s excellence as a home theatre and media solution. Unfortunately, it’s still not quite there as a gaming solution (and getting worse, as they further kill backwards compatibility with every new model they release

It states there is no scheduled date and only that interactivity is being added, no details.

It also states that NO other players then playstation and two recently released models will play the spec 1.1 IF it is given it at all.

Everything is just speculation and stating interactivity is being added which could be anything.

Errm, sorry to bust your bubble, but the PS3 DID feature backwards compatabiliy from day one.

The only difference now, is you have the choice to NOT pay for it, and get the cheaper model. The more expensive model (wether it be 60GB/80GB or whatever will contain BC).

As it is, the Sony way to go, is vastly superior to the abortion Microsoft made with the 360.

if you look at all the PS3 SKU's released (20GB, 40GB, 60GB-EU 60GB-US and 80GB), they all have the same CORE components for PS3 gaming, namely Blu-ray, Cell, standard harddisk and HDMI. The only mistake, I feel, was the ommision of Wifi on the 20GB, as it breaks PSP connectivity.

Compare that to the 360, with it's non standard HDD in some models, optional HD DVD that can never be used for games, random HDMI, and total lack of any Wifi, and you can see who has a clue, and who has not.

Not at all. The PS3 lineup for Playstation 3 gaming, and core functionality, is IDENTICAL.

The 360 is fragmented. Some machines have HDD, others not, some have HDMI. You can buy HD DVD - For movies only, until the new Xbox360 comes along, then some machines will be able to play HD DVD games other not...

The 360 SKU is massively fragmented, the PS3 is not, selective things have been removed, (SACD support and PS3 backards compatability, and the size of the HDD has been changed).

So the 360 adds features and drops the price and the PS3 removes features and that is ok since after all it is Sony.

You can call the 360 a piece of crap but you are in a minority since the sales have crushed the Pcrap 3 yet again. Even the I can no longer read DVD's PS2 is out selling the PS3. That is most likely to replace the broken ones. No need to buy a new 360 if it breaks since MS will take care of it and even pay for shipping.

Some of the riews mainly transformers is proving that HDMI appears to be just a buz word. The audio is said by many reviews to be the best referrence in the HD market. Funny it's not HD sound but is beating the DRM infested HDMI HD sound stage. Guess all that extra bandwidth is not needed.

Lack of wifi who cares my PS3 is connected via ethernet, wifi blows.

Get over the fact that the consoles are game machines and the PS3 is getting the shi& kicked out of it. Hell even the Wii which does not even have HDMI or HD is killing the 360 and PS3 so much for they are needed to make it good. Moron.

Shut up! You can't quote Ken Kutaragi! That's not fair. He stayed just long enough to ruin their next generation console and now that he's no longer with Sony, everything he said is erased. Stop living in the past man! What was that other hilarious Sony quote? It goes something like "next generation gaming begins when *we* say it begins" or close to that.

Does anyone else remember how Sony kept pretending they were going to launch the PS3 _ahead_ of Microsoft's Xbox360? They were flat out lying to their fans, while knowing full well they had nothing. You have to ramp up production of the console months before the launch, so everyone and their dog knew that Sony had not done this. Yet they waited until the last possible minute to announce what was the first of many, many delays. All that, just to try and stop people from buying an Xbox360. Sure, it's just business and this sort of tactic is fairly common.. when there are SHORT delays. I mean, it's one thing to try and trick your fan base into waiting an extra month or two, but did they really expect people to wait a full YEAR and not jump ship? Come on. Sony is such a laughing stock. All you have to do is look back at all the lies they've spun, all the promises they've broken, and all the delays they sprung on their fans. No wonder everybody hates them, except the hardcore fanboys.

Bottom line: Most people are gonna buy a Wii. Secondly, the PS3's so-called "potential" will never be realized because it's too damn hard to program for. The PS3's next-gen graphics will be exceeded by PCs in the near future (*cough* Crysis). And I doubt that PS3 developers will ever be able to attain Crysis-style graphics...ever. The PS3 API is too damn complicated which matches the even more complex hardware. In any case, why would developers dump money into a console which has an ever-diminishing market share? Who the hell has an HDTV anyway? Probably the same people who can afford a $500 gaming system, which is a very limited population.

Like the author stated, it was a stupid move to remove backward compatibility altogether, especially when the consumers came to depend on the PS3's ability to upscale older games. That was one of the major selling points for a time, and one that I was glad to see.

Is every Sony suit a spinmeister and a complete waste of precious oxygen (like so many of the brainwashed Sony fanboys)?

So for $399 i can get a PS3 with Blu-Ray and 40GB or a XBox 360 with DVD and 20GB. Sounds like a no brainer....PS3 by a mile.

Sure, the big games are not coming out until next year, but there is plenty there to tide you over along with a Blu-Ray player.

Next year, the power of the PS3 will be shown and the limitations of the 360 will be much more apparent.

What is sad about this is you guys were saying the same thing last year. It is a absolute fact the developers do not like developing for the PS3. Sony drop the ball on providing quality dev kits. This is why production cost will always be higher and longer lead times than the 360. Even if they get this corrected tomorrow. It will take a couple of years to correct. By time we will be talking about the next gen from the current gen.

right. all PS3 developers hate it. it is a fact. LOL. _all_ developers struggle with new hardware. First generation games are a learning experience on all platforms.

Under the covers, the PS3 uses OGL, just like the Wii. The processing architecture is different. Developers on newer multi-core processors have to change their techniques to take advantage of that architecture.

The 3DO was a platform hardly anyone was familiar with at the time of its release. It was revolutionary hardware that no one had seen before, and in many ways it was considered a failure (mainly due to its high price... sounds familiar). Yet in the 2 years that it was manufactured, customers had more than 200 titles to choose from... and most of them were incredibly fun. Not bad for a cutting-edge platform.

In the year the PS3 has been available, the current list of titles is just plain laughable... and out of those, not one single stand-out game that anyone raves about. One year!

It is a rather well-known fact to anyone who chooses not to ignore it. Developers have stated on several occasions that programming for the PS3 hardware is a nightmare, and the current games reflect that.

Quite simply, the PS3's main purpose was not for games first and foremost. Stop using this "developers need time" crutch... it's getting tired. Developers need time alright... time to figure out how to make a console play games that wasn't designed well for it. Sony should have just called it the Blu-Station.

Or for $399 I can get at least 6 Xbox 360 games or at lest 8 Nintendo Wii games. Sorry, I'd rather have games over a Blu-Ray player, or I mean a PS3.

You have to take into consideration what games are available right now, many if not most of the consumers out there have no idea what new games are planned for the future. There is also the fact that many buyers couldn't care less about new HD formats, they just want a game console for their kids. Most people don't even have an HD set yet.

you are correct...but...most would agree that the 360's first AAA title was Gears of War...which was not released until around a year after the launch...anyone who bought a PS3 today would get months of gaming from great games....Resistance: Fall of Man is a launch title that I STILL play online almost daily...you get all the multi plat games like Madden and NCAA Football...the new Ratchet and Clank game is getting very solid reviews from what I hear...the games ARE there...just not in the abundance that the 360 currently has...with the upcoming exclusive releases of Unreal Tournament 3, HAZE (flying under the radar, everyone should check it out), and MGS4...and the new price points...Sony is looking pretty for the coming year...

not to mention if you have a HDTV, the PS3 is a wonderful intro into the world of High Def movies...it is still one of the higher quality Blu-ray players on the market...and one of the cheapest...pick up a copy of Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's chest on blu-ray....picture quality is outstanding!...

Nvidia pulled the plug on the xbox as THEY stopped making the GPU for it, Nvidia wouldn't lower the cost of the gpu and they were developing the new gpu for ps3, so without the gpu, xbox couldn't go on.

Exactly. Most PS3 fanboys simply ignore that little morsel and prefer to blame Microsoft completely for something that was out of their control regarding the original Xbox.

Microsoft got the last laugh when Sony's procrastination left them with a last-gen GPU from nVidia that PC gamers have been using for over 2 years. :)

If I was still deciding which console to get, I'd still get the 360 because of the games it has out now. Sure the PS3 is probably going to release some good games in the future. But that doesn't mean the 360 won't either. And like you said most games are multi-platform. Which also I'd still rather play the Xbox version even if the PS3 version(s) ever do get better graphics. I'd rather have better online multi-player with more people which currently the Xbox 360 has more online subscribers over the PS3 Network. Not to mention you also get achievements when you play the Xbox 360 version. It's a matter of having more achievements than your friends.

The Xbox 360 can be to if you want it to be. That another thing is if you care about HD-DVD you can buy it. But if you don't then just save your money for games. Plus you can download HD movies on Xbox Live Marketplace without having to buy any extra hardware (or being forced to).

sure, this is obviously true...the 360 hard a year's head start...but honestly after 2 or 3 years the sheer amount of titles becomes irrelevant when you start to add in all sorts of repeat titles like Madden 02, Madden 03, Madden 04, Madden 05 and so on....its a pretty obvious statement that the PS3 will probably not catch the 360 for sheer number of titles ever...unless Microsoft pulls the plug early like they did with the original xbox (but i don't see them doing that this time around).

i would not be so sure of that. The Wii is totally dominating the 360 in sales, like the PS2 did to the first XBox, so i would not rule out a XBox 720 announcement next summer.

usually the top selling console resists the next generation until the last possible second as they want to milk everything they can out of it.

Since the Wii has the largest install base, and continues to outsell the PS3 and 360 world-wide, i would highly doubt they would rush out the next generation.

M$ rushed out the 360 since they got crushed by the PS2. You can not deny that. Now M$ is getting crushed by the Wii. Again, you can not deny that. So based on M$ history, logic says they will rush out the 720.

Is that so hard to follow?

Your hate for MS is really getting tiring, you continue to say the same recycled garbage over and over. Who cares if the Wii is selling well? As it has nothing to do with the xbox360.

Its two entirely different markets, even Nintendo says they are not in the same market, they are going after the casual gamers, people who have difficulty playing video games.

As long as Xbox360 comes out with the games they will continue to dominate. Better graphics and a more powerful system does not mean overall better as has been evidenced by the Wii as well as the original Xbox. (which was far more powerful then the ps2, but they didn't have the mass market of games the ps2 did.

Even Squenix is working on games for the xbox360, and with halo3 doing as well as it did, you honestly think they are going to stop already?

You are right, the Wii is not in the same market as the M$ 360. The Wii is all about the best and most fun gaming experience. The Wii is innovative. The Wii is highly interactive fun.

Any sane person will note that limited = not all. Any sane person will also know that the PS3 has very negative comments from a very wide range of news sites due to the fact that the PS3 has and still is a very badly promoted machine. People are sick and tired of trying to mask a high price with politician style crap. Most people have woken up to "having the wool pulled over their eyes" which is Sony's style of advertising. Anyone who can defend this style has obviously lost the ability to see sense ie. the "fanboys" view or they are just happy to keep getting this crap thrust at them because they have a PS3 and it is the best thing ever. I believe this argument is a lot deeper than a few people can understand hence the continuous bickering.

Well it's not really rocket science to work out that when the 60GB ran out, the 80GB would replace it, and an entry level would sit at the bottom. It also does not take a rocket scientist to work out that when the 80GB's are gone, there will be a bigger capacity high end PS3.

What Sony are doing, is consolodating the SKU's in different regions.

Now Europe/US/Japan all have 40GB at the entry level, but still various different units at the high end (60GB software PS2 BC in Europe, 60GB hardware BC and 80GB software BC in US, 20GB and 60GB hardware BC in Japan), once all these are all exhausted, there will be a single "premium" model in all regions also. I suspect a 160GB PS3 with all features (including PS2 software BC).

At the time and based on the information available that was the most likely scenario. Yes, it turns out he was wrong but that doesn't warrant the name calling. The weatherman told me it was going to rain today but it hasn't, does that make him an idiot? Face it, you are very defensive of Sony and you get mad whenever anyone says something about them that isn't wonderful. You constantly brag about them and praise them as if you worked for Sony yourself and depended on console sales to feed your family. The price drop was on a console that was out of production, what is idiotic about thinking that once it was gone the lower price would go with it. Sony had made no announcements about dropping the price of it's replacement, so there was no reason to think they would at that time. Either way being wrong about something doesn't make someone an idiot, everyone is wrong sometimes. Acting like a child, throwing tantrums and calling people names over a game console however does.
