Sony Ericsson Debuts First US HSDPA Phone

In a sign that 3G is getting closer to becoming commonplace in the US cellular market, Sony Ericsson on Monday introduced its first HSDPA phone for North America, the Z750.

Up until recently, manufacturers passed over the American market in favor of the European and Asian markets where 3G is already widespread. However, with Cingular already beginning to offer HSPDA service and T-Mobile preparing to this year, companies are beginning to roll out phones for the US.

The Z750 will feature a clamshell design with a mirror-like finish. When an incoming call or text message is received, the front will light up, revealing an external display. It will also include functionality that will allow the user to display web, e-mail, and RSS information on the phone desktop.

Also included is a 2.0-megapixel camera, a built-in FM radio with RDS, a media player, and 3D gaming capabilities. Microsoft's Exchange ActiveSync will be supported, as well as Java, POP and IMAP push e-mail solutions.

"We believe the Z750 is such a compelling offer because not only will it be one of the best looking clamshells on the market, but it also provides the tools or applications which really let you get the most from these broadband speeds," global president Miles Flint said.

Sony Ericsson will first make the phone exclusively available in the North American market before debuting it in other markets later in the year. The phone will come in two colors, Phantom Grey or Rose Pink, and will be available in the third quarter of this year.
