Sony PS3 moves toward an online community, gradually

By Scott M. Fulton, III, BetaNews

PlayStation 3 consoles have always had Internet connectivity, but players trying to message one another have found that they're considered "busy" while they're in a game. An upcoming firmware update should change all that.

What's been perceived as perhaps Sony's greatest continuing weakness in its full-feature game console battle against Microsoft's Xbox 360 is the continued delay of its all-inclusive online community. This weakness is only compounded by the perception problem the company created for itself, having announced the PlayStation 3's Home service over a year ago, and having since then delayed its rollout, most recently in search for something that's more "focused" on gaming rather than the virtual bar-hopping experience Home was originally touted to be.

But while one team of developers is working on solving the problem of getting Home to look more "focused," the team readying the PS3's firmware update 2.40 announced over the weekend, by way of a pair of videos on its corporate blog (Part 1 is here, while Part 2 is here, that it's about to release the simplest and most basic feature for enabling any kind of Internet communications linking service to take place: a way for players to pause their games to access the Cross Media Bar (XMB) operating system, for basic system access without exiting.

A demonstration by the SCE team's social media manager Jeff Rubenstein, posted on Sunday, shows a test version of firmware 2.4 being paused. The full operating system features list takes over, except on a charcoal-frosted foreground that transparently reveals the paused game in the background. One of the functional entries on that list is instant messaging, which lets players receive text messages from other players.

"In the past, I would have to get out of the game, read the message, and then decide [whether to respond], said Rubenstein. The demo message was from a friend challenging him to beat a newly posted high score on a different game. Leaving his racing game paused, he then pulled up the second game on the menu. Since XMB is not a multitasking system, a message asks him if he wants to quit the paused game. After clicking on "yes," XMB then started the new game.

While XMB does provide access to other full-time features, such as PlayStation store, the ongoing downloads list, and photo-sharing, while a game is paused, it's important to note that selecting these features does give the player the option of exiting the current game before proceeding. One exception is messaging, which is a low-overhead feature that lets the game stay paused in memory while the player responds.

Another exception is system settings, which will enable the player to set up a Bluetooth headset, for instance, without exiting the active game.

A conceptual feature Rubenstein demonstrated is a way to use the in-game XMB to replace a game's standard musical track to any MP3s in the system, or to a stored playlist of MP3s. A basic media player console is also available in-game.

A second video released this morning shows Rubenstein demonstrating a much-requested trophy system, which utilizes a gold/silver/bronze medal approach to attaining competitive goals, and which should be competitive to the points system Microsoft currently employs with Xbox Live.

Rubenstein did not divulge the timeframe for the 2.40 firmware release other than to say it should be available "very soon."

XBOX360 has the worst user interface imaginable. I've never see software beat up a user so badly.(okay Win95/98/Me too!)

Having said that, the LIVE community and it's features are one of the best communities I've seen. With maybe STEAM (on PC) being second.

Sony has quite a ways to go. I own both as well and am quite familiar with the ups and downs of both.

What?!? You are telling me that boring interface that looks like a high school student designed it PS3 interface is better than the 360s?!?!....To each his own I guess.

No I am not. But the PS3's is much easier to navigate. Mainly due to the LACk of features though.

Trying to log people in, switch users, navigate system menus on the 360 is a juggling nightmare. Whenever we all play on it, the jokes always start over how "user friendly" the 306s interface is.

First, if you don't own a playstation 3 , DON'T COMMENT ON IT. You have no idea on anything the console has to offer other then what other people tell you. I HAVE BOTH XBOX 360 AND PS3, I am not broke like most of the ps3 critics I see complaining because they don't have enough money. POOR YOU boo hoo. I am looking forward to seeing this new update, also love the ps3. 360 DOES NOT COMPARE IN GRAPHICS WHEN IT COMES TO THE PLAYSTATION 3. Thanks ps3 for the updates, which the last one updated the blu ray player to have the highest quality sound EVER! and the online playable content for my sweet blu ray dvd movies.

Gee, so what we get by a pre-qualified owner of both platforms is the demonstrated ability to whine and moan without offering a single constructive insight except that he is not broke - financially, that is, as mentally, I would suggest the prognosis is not nearly so rosy!

Yup, those $30 movies sure are sweet when we can get 90%+ functionality from DVDs costing between $5 and $12.

Sometimes it pays to have more brains than money.

"360 DOES NOT COMPARE IN GRAPHICS WHEN IT COMES TO THE PLAYSTATION 3."

lol...Yah you keep telling yourself that. I have both as well and I have seen nothing better in the graphics department than what the 360 has.

"First, if you don't own a playstation 3 , DON'T COMMENT ON IT."

Most of the people in here commenting do have a PS3.

"I am not broke like most of the ps3 critics I see complaining because they don't have enough money. POOR YOU boo hoo."

I haven't seen anyone complaining of the such. Sounds like you just felt like going on a mindless rant to me.

If you had both you wouldn't be making such asinine claims...

The only advantage the PS3 truly has is the bigger media other then that they compare equally in terms of graphics.

Also as the Wii has proven graphics do not only make a game

"First, if you don't own a playstation 3 , DON'T COMMENT ON IT"

There are regulars (unlike you) on this site who have all THREE current consoles so the police can go home.

"360 DOES NOT COMPARE IN GRAPHICS WHEN IT COMES TO THE PLAYSTATION 3"
Perhaps you might like to tell the media that? They love to compair games across the two, and I love to read those comparisons so a polite get ****** to you. Obviously the two consoles are very simular with what they put out. Sorry if you bought into all the hype (they do it with almost every product launch, why people havnt learnt by now I will never know) about how powerful the ps3 was. Clearly its a good machine, just not the supercomputer sony made it out to be.

AND WHY THE CAPITAL LETTERS? ARE YOU UPSET OVER SOMETHING AND WISH TO MAKE YOUR COUNTERPOINT STAND OUT MORE?

Keep trying Sony...Still not there. You are getting closer though. One thing that bothers me is that most of these features they are bring out are optional based on the game developer's choice. These features should be standard and not optional.

In time mate. These are obviously features that will be adapted by all developers for past and future releases but just like any new feature, it will take some time.

This is still a great new feature for the PS3 (yes 360 had it). Can't wait!

2.40 Release date "very soon" = JULY 2nd.

I hope they do. Unlike some people I actually use BOTH consoles and want each of them to succeed. I still like my 360 better, but that doesn't mean I want the PS3 to fail.

Honestly neither do I. It makes a great Blu-Ray player, but other than that it just kinda sits there. I get all of my multi-platform games on the 360 because I like the controller and live service MUCH better. All of the games I like are pretty much always either multi-p. or 360 exclusive.

In my post above I said I *want* the PS3 to succeed. I didn't say it had yet.(At least not in my house)

I think sony should fire everyone in the gaming department cause nobody there had made a good move yet. still worth to get a PS3 over the crashbox 360 though

Agree with your first sentence however your opinion in the second is just funny...thinking the POS3 is more worth it.

they should fire everyone.
I still choose the 360 over the Pos3 and this is because of the game line up being better on the 360 side and its easier for me to get together with friends on the xblive network. Sony should have adopted the xblive connectivity system
