Sony Recalls 416,000 Digital Cameras

UPDATED Sony is offering to repair 416,000 Cyber-shot DSC-T5 cameras following reports of the device's metal case warping and creating an edge that can cut hands. About 30 cases of cuts were reported in Japan, and several others overseas. Affected cameras were released in September 2005.

350,000 Cyber-shots sold in the United States, Europe and China are being recalled, along with 66,000 sold in Japan. Sony has posted a warning for customers, along with a list of the affected serial numbers and contact information for initiating a repair.

Affected cameras could experience peeling and warping of the metal coating on the bottom on the camera. Sony is offering all owners of the cameras free replacements to fix the problem.

"Sony identified an irregularity during the initial part production that affected the adhesive strength of the metal coating on this part," the company said in a statement. "As a result, it became more likely that damage to the bottom casing could cause the metal coating to peel away and warp outward."

The serial numbers of the cameras affected would fall between 3500001 and 3574100. Those that have already had the repairs done would be reimbursed for any out-of-warranty costs, while those that have not are asked to fill out a claim form.
