Sony Releases PSP Media Manager Tool

Sony's PlayStation Portable soared off store shelves with the promise of the first true portable entertainment experience: in addition to video games it plays music and movies, photo slideshows and even supports Web browsing. But getting content onto the PSP has proven easier said than done.

On Tuesday, Sony responded to the complaints by releasing the PSP Media Manager, a software application designed to ease the process of transferring content to the device. Using thumbnail navigation, users can select photos and videos to be converted into formats the PSP supports.

Users can set a number of different quality parameters before transferring media, and even subscribe to RSS feeds such as podcasts to be automatically downloaded onto the PSP.

"Whether your source is 16:9 high definition video footage, a collection of photos from your latest vacation, or a PSP formatted publication, this new technology lets you view and share it anywhere you and your PSP system go," said Sony Media Software VP Dave Chaimson.

But the PSP Media Manager won't be free to existing customers. An online download of the tool will cost $19.95 USD, with a retail packaged priced at $29.95 USD. The retail box includes 6-foot USB 2.0 cable and five free song downloads from Sony's Connect music store.

i bought a cheap vr max media manager. but cant get it to work properly and i can only find video managers for free anyone know where to download a free media mang. ps i dont know where to buy psp media mang anyway free is beter thanx

And a very fine piece of software it is too. A steal at $20.

To the people that find any excuse to whinge at Sony, it could be alot worse, it could be Microsoft. If it Microsoft, it would be subscription based transfer, or renting the application.

Wake up idiots, Sony is not making you buy this, Sony provided a standard USB port, so you can use Windows Explorer and 3rd party tools to convert to PSP compatable formats, you can buy this EXTRA tool, for a mere $20 if you want a nice UI to do the job of converting and copying for you.

PS. Anyone is Europe buying the online downloadable version, a little birdy told me that if you lie about your location, say California, you might get out of EU import duty. Of course I would not do that, it's naughty... :-)

i'm disgusted to see this from sony.

you blow £200 on a good setup, £35 a pop on the games, £15 for the UMD's, you gotta hack the thing to death to get it to do what you want it to (then sony patch um up again)

...and now they want us to pay for privilidge of converting to their formats and using a media manager for 'extra functionality' on the psp?!

insanity.

it's an app, please, lets get this on bittorrent asap.

Funny enough ... I rememer when the Playstation 1 was slated to be released with Nintendo along with games such as 'Cosmo's Odyssey' and a few other titles ... then Nintendo decided that it didn't want to go with CDs b/c of the load time and perhaps the standardized format that allows piracy and went with the more costly cartridges ... thus the N64... and then the Dreamcast also had a proprietary format.

How Sony is that? Buy our product then buy everything we should've included in the first place. I mean seriously, why would you mandate that video files have to named a certain way. I keep telling myself no more Sony products until they get off this proprietary kick. When will they wake up?

When they stop making a profit. And seeing as how people keep buying their stuff, I'm not sure that will happen any time soon.
