Sony Shipping Two New Blu-ray Players in Europe

Sony said Thursday that it will begin shipping its latest Blu-ray disc player in October, the BDP-S500 in Europe, the higher-end cousin to its BDP-S300 model which will also be shipping in the region. The S300 will retail for £399 (599 euros) while the S500 would retail for £599 (899 euros). The players come bundled with the Spiderman trilogy in the UK, Sony said.

Among the features included are 1080p upscaling, 24p True Cinema, support for the x.v.Color standard, and HDMI. The S500 adds HDMI 1.3 and Dolby and DTS-HD1 sound. " "Blu-ray is taking off, and the BDP-S300 player is designed to give many more people a way of joining the party in style," Sony Europe Home Entertainment chief Hiro Shinohara said in a statement.

Did Sony pay Disney to go blu?

If a statement like this was made in the HD DVD arena the fanboys would be running crying fowl but since it is Sony it will for the most part go unnoticed.

At this years IFA (Giant Consumer Electronics Show) convention in Berlin the backers of Blu-ray was asked if they had received financial means in order to support Blu-ray.

Warner Bros, 20th Century Fox, MGM and Sony Pictures all said no. However, Disney answered with a more doubtful "No Comment."

This does not say they have received money, however it is strange they did not use the opportunity to set the record straight.

Blu-ray Dominates HD Sales

New data from Home Media Research shows that Blu-ray is continuing to lead in high definition media sales. As of August 5th, the top 10 best selling high definition movies are all available on Blu-ray, and half of those exclusive to the format. Warner Brother's '300' leads the pack, followed by 'The Departed', 'Casino Royale', 'Planet Earth', and 'Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest'.

Noticeably absent from the list is Universal who didn't have a title which sold enough copies break into the top 20. Paramount made it to 17th with their release of 'Babel', but if there wasn't a Blu-ray version of the title, it would have fall well short making the list. All Blu-ray studios were represented in the Top 20 (including Lionsgate with their release of 'Crank').

Who cares! Like many have stated it is so early with both formats it really does not matter. We'll see once the average consumer starts to buy instead of the young kids living with their parents. I find it interesting the amount of blo-ray fan boys I see posting pictures of the their collections. They buy every title just say they have it. It may suck but hey they have it. Some moron on bluray posted a picture of his 220 blurays oh boy he wants to prove he is a fool that is great who cares.

I see you bring Paramount into the picture I guess you are still crying in your soup about them leaving blo-ray. Wait till Shrek and Transformers come out and you will be crying more. For God's sake get over it already and grow up a little.

This Xmas the shelves will have $500 blo-ray players that are not final spec yet and final HD for $200 which one will sell more? Hum not blo-ray.

No-one knows if the 3rd layer of the 51gb disc will work with gen 1 or 2 HD DVD players.

That's all.

The 51gb disc is not a change of spec.
Wake up.

We already know from the specs of the 1st drives that they will play the 1st and 2nd layers of the new 17gb per layer discs.

That being the case (and it is) the 'issue' you're trying to make something of is a rather minor matter of the 3rd layer only.

.....and even if the 3rd layer is not readable so what?

There's no indication whatsoever that the movie industry wants to move to 51gb TL discs
(quite the opposite in fact if you read what Viacom/Paramount had to say)
and even if they did it is not beyond the wit of anyone to package the disc in such a way that the main feature was on layers 1 & 2 with 'extras' on the 3rd.

It's actually Blu-ray that stands to leave people behind as the extras they advertise requitre a secondary video decoder to play 'p-in-p' stuff (for profile 1.1) and internet connectivity to play d/l-able content (for profile 2.0) that the current gen players (including the PS3, it has no secondary video decoder) simply do not have at all.

Aww, there's ways around the PnP stuff... like including two complete separate versions of the movie on the disc (one with, one without). They've done that before... LOL

No wonder all that disc space is necessary.

I don't understand why it's so hard for some people to understand. If HD DVD had never come out, and Sony took the time they needed to let BD mature, it would be an incredible HD option. The point is, HD DVD is here, it's final, specs that are optional on BD are mandatory on HD DVD (which is the way it should be), and studios are starting / have started to realize that.

The current (and upcoming) crop of BD players out there are simply way overpriced, an extreme waste of money, and a horrible investment for anyone who is even remotely serious about the future of their HD home theater.

so, the PS3 just needs a software update to be Profile 2.0 ready. do you know how simple it is to instantiate a new decoder object in software on the cell?

They dumped on original Xbox owners afer 2 years, the dumped on 360 owners with the Elite, they dumped on the Elite owners by including HDMI in the core and premiums, then dumped on core owners by making some games require HDD. The dumped on 11 million 360 owners by giving them a shoddy, rushed to market unreliable console, that need to be sent back every once if a while for repair, for upto six weeks.

Guess what, the repairs are not working either. Even new August 07 units are still failing...

Lets' hope yours does not die on Halo3 day.

The Samsung dual format player is only Blu-ray profile 1.0 afterall.

The Samsungs Press release for IFA says the price is 999euros (approx £689 or $1378 US).

So that's exactly 0 (as in none, zero, not one etc etc) 'profile 1.1' Blu-ray players on the market now or likely to be in months......my bet is that they miss the new Nov 2007 target too.

Wow, with all those extra 'profile 1.1' features they're trying to claim to sell Blu-ray I wonder if this comes under misrepresentation and false advertising?

This just gets funnier and funnier.

.....and that Daewoo is so obviously a PR exhibition model of what they are planning rather than a proper model announcement/release.

The samsung play is 1.1 capable. It's got the 1.1 hardware, PiP dual decoder, and ethernet port, a software update to Profile 1.1 is forthcoming.

The Daewoo is 1.1 ready, as is the Philips and Lowe Blu-Ray players.

Another nice attempt at FUD, but it fell well short of the mark.

Toshiba's HD-A2 is still in the top-10 on Amazon, among all electronics. The HD-A20 is now on the list, $200 cheaper than the cheapest BD player. Still, no Blu-ray products from any manufacturer on the top-100. I guess millions of people can't be wrong... Blu-ray is not a good deal.

Warner Bors. will be supporting both formats as they want to push Total HD (their own disc that can handel both HD DVD and Blu-Ray, one format on each side of the disc) starting 2008.

I am pro xbox and HD DVD, but I don't mind the idea of both HD DVD and Blu-Ray living side by sid, movies being sold on Total HD. This way, the WB way, you will be able to play BD films on HD DVD players and vice versa.

I support the decision of Paramount Pictures and Dreamworks to drop Bluray - Both go HD DVD Exclusive! If you look at the Sony camp, they have Disney, MGM, Fox, Sony Pictures being BD exclusive. And being BD exclusive don't do much good for people with HD DVD players. And the BD side started the exclusive run.

A perfect world would be for all studioes to support both formats. And sometimes the arrogant Sony side, needs to taste their own medisin. I hope they will learn a lesson.

BD 1.1 spec on the rocks again?
In what is now becoming an absolute joke, too funny to be even called a fiasco, the "new, newer" deadline for all Bluray players to HAVE to meet the mandatory final player specification is approaching on November 1st, yet NO players, ZERO, are currently scheduled to ship that meet the BD 1.1 spec. In fact, all new BD players are being rushed to market before Nov 1st so that they do not have to meet the spec, and the only player to meet 1.1 has now apparently been delayed till 2nd quarter 2008!

The Daewoo one does. The new Samsung one has the hardware (the PiP capable decoder and ethernet, just missing the software).

There isn't even one.

The Daewoo is a PR demo model without a serious release date.
It's an indication of what they think they'll be doing at some point in the future, that's all.

There's not a single 'profile 1.1' player available.
There are no concrete dates for their release either, just estimates and guesses.

That's why they're rushing out as many non-profile 1.1 players out before the Nov deadline
(which is really what this thread was about).

I guess we can all start posting links to eproductwars since HD-DVD is outselling BD in the top 10 and 25 again.

What a shame that a format with so few players can keep up with BD. I think you will see another company go HD-DVD exclusive during CEDIA.

BD can make all the "cheap" players they want. Right now, you can get an A2 with 8 free movies, free shipping, and no tax at Amazon for $238US.

- I bet we don't bother with many of them, over-priced & under-spec'd.

Like the PS3 their sales will be under-whelming to say the least.
Loads of them will stay bolted to the shelves.....which given the spec is what they deserve.

Imagine a Blu-ray stand-alone being unable to play BD -R or BD -REs.

It's pathetic.

The S300 isn't 'profile 1.1' compliant and I highly doubt the S500 is either.
The only 2 supposedly confirmed Blu-ray players that are are the $2000 Denon (now delayed until Q2 2008 - late next spring or summer) and the $900+ dual format Samsung BDP5000 - but now we hear there are questions about this too.

They can't even sell stuff to meet their own supposedly mandatory (from Oct 2007) spec.

Talk about built-in obsolescence......how pi*sed off will all the BD owners be to find that supposedly vital extra content isn't accessible with their brand new players?

Why bother?

Compared to HD DVD it's just more underspec'd & overprice junk......

......with the least amount of content available and the least amount of exclusive content available.

How things can turn around, huh?

The Daweoo one does 1.1, and the Philips one to.

The Lowe is unconfirmed, as is the new Sharp player.

They have a large Daewoo electronics plant near me here in Northern Ireland and I know guys that work there.
Their comment & advice?
Never buy a Daewoo.
They put in the absolute cheapest components they can get their hands on and their reliability is appalling - most tellingly of all is that they would never buy one either.

I'm looking forward to it being reviewed..... sometime late next year!
