Sony's Stringer Admits PS3 Price Too High

By Ed Oswald | Published June 15, 2007, 12:42 PM

Sony CEO Howard Stringer admitted in an interview that the price of the PlayStation 3 needs to come down, but provided no estimate as to how much of a price drop consumers can expect.

"That is what we are studying at the moment. That's what we are trying to refine," he told the Financial Times on Thursday. He also admitted that the Nintendo Wii had broad appeal to consumers, and acknowledged his success.

"I would be the first to say to you that Nintendo Wii has been a successful enterprise and a very good business model compared to ours," he said, adding much of its success had to do with price.

Sony has lowered the price by 20 percent in Japan ahead of its November launch, however it did not lower the price elsewhere. Even with the price cuts, the PS3 is still struggling, being outsold by the Wii there by a five-to-one margin.

Sony's gaming unit is increasingly becoming a liability for the company, and is beginning to cause concern among investors. For the fiscal year ending March 31, the once powerful unit posted a staggering $2 billion loss.

High losses due to the PS3 are drowning out successes in other aspects of its business, including strong HDTV sales and improving performance in its Blu-ray division.

Comments

Anyone who thinks the price of the PS 3 is too high must be crazy. The lowest price you can buy a 1080p high definition disc player is $599 regardless if it's a Blu-Ray player or an HD-DVD player and frankly $599 is a steal for real 1080p high definition.

Sup guys, Pretty good discution so far. In my opinion ps3 is by far, the best console out there. I know by more than 6 sources that the xbox 360 console is being replace by a new one for free (due to malfuntion). The Wii is fun, if you are 15 years old. ( graphics really really suck). I own a ps3 and honestly have to tell you that is worth the price, especially for the Blueray feature. If you really want to enjoy the ps3, go get a hdtv first and you wont regret it EVER. The game play, controller, graphics are far better than any PC ( and that is saying a lot). You can even play with a keyboard or mouse (ps3 recognizes it via bluetooth). The latest system update, lets your ps3 recognize any pc and use all your files, among tons of more features. Regarding the games, dont let that fool you, Gt4, Sacom, nba 07, just be pacient and enjoy all the great games available, especially online ( which is free and works excellent).

I honestly have to tell you, I ve tried all 3 consoles , incluing pc games and the ps3 KICKS a** !!!! After you play HD 1080p games, you wont settle for less. Its worth it. Go get a good job and buy it. (this consonsole is no longer for kids and the price gives you that idea).

As far as the Wii graphics sucking and made only for 15 year old once again I don't think so. The demographic that the Wii appeals to is large and that is the idea of selling a product. I would rather pay for the online on the 360 than deal with the SOny solution, its just a mess. I hope the GT4 game is better then the demo. Yes it looks nice but the game is just BORING. I have also yet to see SOny make a good sports game. The baseball game is a joke as is their attempts at basketball.

If the 360 does break you don't buy a new one. I did have a problem with mine and am more than happy with what MS did to correct the problem. The cost of the money was refunded and my warranty was extended. You really don't know what you are talking about.

You forgot to add that you can heat your room with the Pcrap3 also. The reliable is yet to be seen. The PS2 took about a year to break in astronimcal numbers. It seems that SOny only makes things to break anymore.

I will admit that their HD TVs are nice but would never own one since I no longer trust them as a company. You only need to be hit in the head so many times until you learn to avoid thier products.

The Pcrap 3 has been out how long and still has nothing good to play on it? The system must have been rushed to market to explain the lack of anything to play. Maybe they should have paid the patent holders before the system was released. I owned NBA 07 and thought it sucked. In fact most web sites that reviewed also said that it sucked. 2kGames was a much better game but more or less a port from the 360. Why not compare the online, online is online? Plus, there's also the failed Blu-Ray crap (Betamax #2) that everyone wanting a PoS3 is forced to buy and which makes it massively unpopular.

I mean damn what are the numbers now 7 million wii's sold? Microsoft has sold 11 million xbox 360's with over a year head start? Now that has to scare both microsoft and sony.

I can't find the wii anywhere, but what do you know I can now find a ps3 anywhere I wish with a 600 dollar price tag, target, best buy, eb games etc. As well as the xbox 360. I bet it would be 50 million wii's if supply could meet demand.

I honestly believe this has to do with price/features/style and reputation.

Sony quite simply did not do their research and were so under pressure by competitors they rushed to market and their feature set was nothing more then trying to one up microsoft at feature set and power with no look at what the consumer wanted or price point.
They should of scraped the design and started over for the price alone. This thing was plagued from day 1 with all sorts of problems, production, parts, game glitches. Lower the price would be a start and reinvent the sony name would be another.

Now I just stick to my pc. I have my keyboard/mouse.

The ps3 was not rushed, it had everything included with it at time of launch that they wanted to including a blu-ray player and full HD support, xbox 360 did not, and still does not have a system with HD movie support and you have to buy the elite version for full HD support.

As far as game glitches... that has absolutly nothing to due with the system, every single glitch in every single game has to do with how the SOFTWARE was coded, not the hardware..

C'mon seriously, you really think HD support is that important? What percentage of consumers actually own a HD T.V. At this point nobody gives a $h!t about Blue-Ray or HD-DVD. The only thing that matters is the game. Will HD support really enhance the gaming experience? Put a HD T.V. next to a regular T.V. and you can't really see the difference in quality. The Wii is not HD capable and does not have DVD. But they're out selling the PS3 by a 5 to 1 margin. All that matters are the games and the PS3 doesn't even have games to take advantage of their gaming engine. The rest of the so called features are just smoke and mirrors.

I agree complelety that the ps3 does not have games to take advantage of the improved graphics or the larger game size compared to the other two systems that is why i have yet to own the system.

my comment wasn't about 'how great' certain features of the system are, it was that the price point is not as ridiculous as people are making it out to be for the hardware that is included, especially when compared to the initial price of the ps2.

I could probably agree that the price is right for what you get. The problem is that not everyone wants everything you get with it.

MS definetely made the right move by giving consumers a choice and not bundling an HD-DVD drive into it. Had they added an HD-DVD drive, the price would have been the same as the PS3 and it would have had slow sales as well.

Score: 0

|

I agree completely. By not including an HD-DVD drive automatically, MS gave an affordable option to gamers who do not have HD TVs anyway. Then it gives you the option to get the drive later if you buy an HDTV. For me, I don't have one, so BluRay on the PS3 is retarded, and I realize I am paying hundreds for functionality I can't use. At least with the 360 it is optional.

Score: 0

|

Also the 360 allows you to spread it out a little. It is a whole lot easier to spend $400 and then $150-$200 later(depending on what kind of deals are going) later. Also if you can't afford the $400 you can get the core and just upgrade it as you get the money. MS made no mistake in making options. Let the customer choose instead of making the choice for them.

Score: 0

|

If they lower the price of the PS3 another $100, all they will do is lose $409 per console instead of $309.

The more they produce / sell, the more they lose. I agree the game selection is what's killing the PS3. It's a decent movie player and a great gaming console with hardly any exclusives. Motor Storm is pretty cool though.

It was a bad idea to get into the next gen console war a year late. It seems to be driving BD movie sales but at a much lower rate than HD-DVD, whose fans seem to be more loyal and spend a lot more money on movies.

Since them, the price of BD lasers have dropped significantly, production has ramped and Euro PS3 have lower component count, due to software PS2 emulation.

If they drop $100 off the price, It's likely the loss will be about $200 in total. Considering PS2 and PSP are still making SOny money, things arn't so bad.. Microsoft have never made a single cent from XBox, and have recently said in a press release, they are still losing money (they expect to make money on Xbox in late 2008).

There are some cool game NOW, and some fantastic games in the runup to Xmas. If Sony can get $100 drop, with the lineup of games it has coming, it will be a PS3 Xmas. 360 was 05/06 news, Wii was 06/07 news, and PS3 will be 07/08 news...

Maybe so, but Sony is still losing money hand over fist, even with these amazing new production cost drops.

"Euro PS3 have lower component count, due to software PS2 emulation."

Translation: Sony is desperately trying to cut corners, even if it means shafting their European customers. You get less for the same..err, for a HIGHER price.

"Considering PS2 and PSP are still making SOny money, things arn't so bad.."

It doesn't matter. Sony's game division is looked at as a WHOLE, and as a whole they lost $2 billion last fiscal year. You can't ignore a staggering loss like that by looking at areas of the gaming division that made money. If the PS2 and PSP both *made* money, yet overall they still lost over $2 billion, that means the PS3 lost *MORE* than $2 billion. Whatever profit the PS2 and PSP made got absorbed by the huge losses created by the PS3. That's something to think about.

"Microsoft have never made a single cent from XBox"

Your point being? Maybe they haven't made any money, but they also haven't lost $2 billion dollars last year. It shows you the tables are turning. Sony is continuing to rack up staggering losses while Microsoft is finally breaking even and starting to make money. They knew from the start it would take years to break even. Besides, Microsoft is a company that can afford to keep losing money on their consoles, Sony is not. A company losing money on their consoles is actually a good thing for consumers. It means we're getting the hardware for cheap, EXCEPT when it causes so much loss that it threatens the company itself.

So you can keep pointing fingers at Microsoft every time there is bad news about Sony. If both MS and Sony kept losing money at the same rate they're doing now, guess which one will be out of business soon?

Oh and since you're so keen on pointing out that Microsoft won't be making a profit on the Xbox until 2008, when do you suppose Sony will be making a profit on the PS3? My guess is never.

"There are some cool game NOW, and some fantastic games in the runup to Xmas."

Really? Name a few then. You have to name games which aren't already available on other system, and they can't be personal favorites. Meaning, they have to be games that actually SELL and make money, not just games that YOU consider to be cool. Come on, get serious. We all know the PS3 hasn't had any chart toppers and probably won't anytime soon.

Sony is getting very few exclusive titles for the PS3 this time around, compared to what they had on the PS2. Even the creator of the Final Fantasy series announced he has no intentions of developing for the PS3. OUCH!!

Couldn't agree less. The price is not a big issue, the game is the issue with the PS3. There is simply no PS3 game.

The WII success is part due to the price, but most importantly, it's the design of the system. It get the people to interactive with the system as oppose to other systems that basically sit on your a** forever.

The Wii is very different and appeals for to people for different reasons. Plus its cheap and includes a game. For $250, you are home gaming. For $550-560 minimum, you can go game with a PS3.

With PS3, it is a combination of lack of games (how many current PS3 titles are exclusive?) and price.

CANT YOU JUST SHUT THE HELL UP?

"The price is not a big issue, the game is the issue with the PS3."

Are you kidding me?? Price is a HUGE issue. Everybody knows the "sweet spot" for a console is around $199-249 USD. This is why the Wii is selling so well. Yes, games are important too, but you need a well priced console *and* good games to have a winner. You can make the most amazing game ever, and people still won't go and waste $600+ just to play it.

Even the cheaper version of the Xbox360 at $299 is fairly pricey and really pushing the limit. The PS3 is TWICE that price. You can buy a Wii, lots of accessories and a bunch of the top titles for the same price as a PS3. It doesn't matter how advanced the system is, if it's pricey, it won't sell. It's as simple as that. If Google released a console that cost $10,000 to manufacture and they tried to sell it for $1,000 it would be a great bargain and everyone would buy it, right? WRONG.

Again, the sweet spot is around $199-249 USD. You can *maybe* push that to $299 at the most. This is why the Xbox360 isn't doing so stellar. They're doing "alright", but nothing to brag about. Sony on the other hand is doing horribly. Even if they dropped the price of the PS3 by $100, it still wouldn't be nearly enough. Also, if Sony does drop the price of the PS3, you can bet your arse Microsoft will follow suit in a heart beat.

Score: 0

|

"Terrible comparison."

Yes, of course it's a terrible comparison. Sony cannot be compared to anyone, because they have no equal! *roll eyes*

Let's sum it up. You can't compare the PS3 to the Wii, because they have a very different target audience. You also can't compare the PS3 to the Xbox360, because Microsoft had a year head start.

Basically, you can't compare the PS3 to *any* of the nex-gen consoles, because Sony is losing against BOTH of them. Now if Sony was winning, then the Sony zealots around here would have noooo problem comparing the PS3 to the other two systems. Does that about cover it?

Score: 0

|

DaveBG again, pissed because the lowest priced, worst resolution next gen gaming system is taking away all those potential PS3 customers.

Oh yeah, the Wii is actually profitable. Too bad Dave, you'll just have to live with the fact that an inferior system is kicking everyones a** and it's not made by Sony.

You are truly pathetic.

The iPhone will be subsidised by the carriers, so i'll basically get it for free when I sign a £40/month contract for 18 months (well I won't cos i don't want one) but its rather different to the PS3. Price is the major factor. Wii is hardly rolling in good games. It has a few. so does PS3.

Score: 0

I doubt carriers will subsidize the ENTIRE cost of the iPhone. Go into any Car Toys and many of their Windows-based SmartPhones are like $199 with activation & 2-year contract...and that's after a couple $50 mail-in rebates. I'd expect the same for the iPhone.

As for the PS3 & games, it's a Catch-22. People won't invest in a high-priced console that has a minimal software library; developers won't invest time/money making games for an underselling console. Solution (I know people have suggested it before): Sony ad for PS3 "The lowest-priced Blu-Ray player available! (Oh, and it plays cool games too.)"

Die hard apple fans will buy it even tho the 8gb is the same price as the ps3 its not about what the device is, it brand loyalty.
