Store Ads Detail Xbox 360 Price Drop

By BetaNews Staff, BetaNews

July 31, 2007, 2:34 PM

Although Microsoft has remained mum on the subject, a number of retail store ads being prepared for mid-August have disclosed that the price of the Xbox 360 will be lowered by $50. The move was largely expected following Sony's $100 price drop on its now-discontinued 60GB PS3.

The Xbox 360 Premium will now be sold for $349.99, and include a copy of "Table Tennis" from Rockstar. The Xbox 360 Elite will also see a price drop, but only of $30, bringing the HDMI-equipped console to $449.99. The Xbox 360 Core, meanwhile, will cost $279.99, $20 cheaper than its original price. There are rumors, however, that Microsoft will be discontinuing production of its Core console.

"Nice, seems Xbox 360 has lost Bioshock as an exclusive, and it's commin to PS3."

It's still a rumor, but if/when it does come out for the PS3 it won't be until 2008. By that time I would have already beat it on the 360.

I love what he says though in your article:
"LEVINE: Right now we’re totally focused on making the game for Xbox 360. Microsoft has been a great partner, we love the platform, and we get to make a PC game as well. That’s great because we come from the PC side, but right now we’re focused on getting the game out the door on the platform that we’re on and that we love."

"And PS3 sales have jumped 5600% on amazon."

Could it be because it's a new sku and just by buying one would make it jump 100% from before it existed?

Here's more quotes from your article that I enjoyed:
"New titles expected to drive demand for the product include Lair, Heavenly Sword, and a new social networking platform called Home."

That's all the $500 machine has to offer? I'll stay with my 360 and Wii, thanks.

"Sony in July posted mounting losses in its game division due to lower-than-expected performance of the PS3.

"The latest Playstation has sold 1.4 million units in the U.S. to date. Sony maintained a shipment forecast of 11 million PS3 units this business year."

I'm pretty sure the 11million is globally. The 1.4 million is North America, so it's actually skewing the truth.

Anyway, Sony say they have sold 6million PS3's globally to date. Not sure if this is shipped (like Microsoft quotes), or sold to end users.

So now you have to buy a hard drive to play M$ 360 games because the DVD format is too limiting and games have to be "dumbed down" to work on the 360.

M$ really seems confused this generation and it is puzzling as to why. Add-ons have never done well in the history of video games. in fact, that was their justification for all XBoxes to have a hard drive.

Then with the 360 they do not include one in every sku. Next, in a knee jerk reaction, they release the HD-DVD add on drive. Then they release a sku with HDMI.

Which version should a developer aim for? Which version should a consumer buy?

I know all the xbots will rant and rave about choice etc... and fail to see the point being made.

Well, it would depend on the game as not all games are going to require the entire dvd.

Since any game that requires the HDD will be labeled on the game itself, this really isnt an issue.

The core system was based for the average gamer and budget consumer, I am sure this isn't going to really be an issue.

Until Sony has something that shows that a 50 gb disk is required to have a better gaming experience, it truly is a moot point.

Also, for someone who dislikes MS you seem to troll every board that mentions MS with the same BS over and over.

Yeah, you missed the point. Since you brought up the issue about the HDD, (in an article that talks only about a price drop, no less) it would be safe to say if there was not someone with a bigger medium it never would have been an issue.

The issue with pgr4 (where this whole issue began with the limited space) is moot as the developer has stated the current medium MS is using is working fine and no corners had to be cut.

See, I don't have an affinity to one or the other, is there a lot of things I don't like about Sony? Yes, there are. Is there a lot of things I don't like about MS. That would be a yes. Do I use both of their products? Yes, I do. Do I go on forums just for the sake of slamming the other company. No that would be you.

You have made it quite clear of your dislike for MS, so practically everything you post can be taken with a grain of salt as nothing MS does will ever be good and you will continue to use childish shorthand.

The fact remains which I have stated over and over, if MS or Sony or Nintendo dropped out of the console wars, you would see less innovation. and even higher prices.

Don't hold your breath. Manufacturing started mid June, and Microsoft are only recently getting supplies of them, and will be stockpiling them until AFTER the holiday season.

They have over 2 million 90nm consoles in the supply chain to run down, before they refil the chain with 65nm units.

This was reported on IGN a week or so back.

What makes me laugh, is Microsoft are dropping the price by $20 - $50 (depending on model), in an obvious attempt to clear the stock of 90nm units, in preparation for 65nm "Falcon" units. This is no different to the tactic Sony used for the 60GB PS3 units. The difference being Sony got a hard time over it. It's also no different to any other company on this planet, lowering prices to clear stock in prep for a new model is common practice.

Your system sucks a fat a** by the way.

I see you have to run cables on the floor along your base board. Those look like (cheap)speaker cables, possibly extention cord wire. Do those go to your rear speakers? Where is your *ahem* center channel on that awesome 7.1 surround system?

Why is your entire system and apartment mired in filth?

Why would you put a plasma on a corner stand that takes up as much room as a DLP rear projection. You could have gotten a 55" for the same money as that 42" plasma.

That's right I forgot, renters can't put holes in the walls. I checked, the PIP on my Stewart screen is bigger than your entire TV.

You should think before you spend money on junk with burn in problems and inaccurate color.

Did I hear the 360 is going to drop it's price? I may have to buy a few and give them away as gifts.

One more question. Why is it that NCAA 08 for the PS3 and the PS2 combined have sold less copies than the 360 by itself?

You can put any old 2.5in SATA HDD in your PS3. You are not locked into "special" and pricey hard drive upgrades.

You want a 160GB PS3, without voiding your warranty? Sure, buy a cheap PS3 (some places still have 20GB PS3's at $449) and slap in one of these:

http://www.newegg.com/Pr...px?Item=N82E16822136071

4 years time, you will be able to upgrade your same PS3 to a 1TB drive, or a low power flash drive for similar peanuts.

The fact is Sony charge $100 less, $499, for the dead 60gb version of the PS3 compared to the $599 80gb version.

$100 for 20gb.

Is that your idea of 'OK' & value just cos your beloved is doing it?

He's right though for $100 more you get a game (which is more or less a throwaway title IMO)less functionality out of the system for ps2 and ps1 and 20gb more.

The xbox basically decided there were different levels of gamers, the casual, the home entertainment gamer, and the ultimate hi-def gamer.

No one forces you to buy anything you don't have to buy a hdd unless its the game you want, sony did it with Final Fantasy.

Not everyone needs a hd-dvd player either hence why MS didn't include it.

Also as it has been with all sony's devices when its a multiple device if used for multiple purposes it burns out faster.

But then again, MS did that so that you can download TV shows and Movies. They didn't want to to just connect it to your computer and get the files off of HDD. That's probably the only way the movie studio's would have done it.

Sure, the 360 is and will always be more successful than the PS3 even with less storage capacity just like the Wii.

Don't be pissed because you backed the wrong horse Dave. Just buy a 360 and be happy for once.

Granted this is just speculation until M$ officially announces a price cut, but i am surprised at the small size of the cuts.

Sony is in big trouble right now, and a large cut on the 360 would really hit them hard as Sony can not afford a real cut of their own. If the Elite came in at $359 and the Premium was $299, Sony would be dead in the USA and Europe.

So the 3yr warranty extension because the console quality is so crap is now a BONUS?

I can't understand how easilly people have been fooled by the 3yr warranty

for the idiots that think it's a full warranty, here is the shocker:

It only covers red ring of death failures. All other issues (and the 360 has many of them), are still only covered for 1yr (or 90 days depending on where you live).

If you console dies, it's not covered. If it starts scratching discs, it not covered. If it burns your house down, it's not covered.

You still refuse to admit that MS is working on fixing the problems but then again that would not play into your hate campaign.

Scraching disks I have yet to have that problem. Maybe you should move your system when the dirive is spinning. That is a good idea with all disk drives. But then again that won't play into your game.

The 360 has many very good games when the PS3 has Q-bert and stardust. That means the disk drive is not in use so maybe the PS3 will scratch disks as you claim the 360 does. But we don't reaally know about the PS3 doing this since the drive isn't being used, oh well.

Of course it's a bad thing.

If a company had been forced to offer a 3yr repair program because of unreliability issues, you have to be a total idiot to even start to think this is a good thing.

The disc scratching issue is not isolated to a few units, or units that have been moved during play, it's another inherient design issue, one which Microsoft are still covering up. In the fullness of time, (in all likelyhood as a result of the EU commission investigation into the issue), they will finally admit that, and stick that under the 3yr program aswell.

Still who wants a console that needs to be send back every few months for repair? No thanks.

The 360 still has more games and exclusives. Just because a PS3 may get a couple more exclusives in a given month, week or day (which I think your full of sh-t, remembering the article here saying the PS3 is getting 15 exclusives this year) doesn't mean I can't play all the other 360 games and exclusives from the previous months.
