TiVo Series 3 software update adds ads

By Tim Conneally | Published April 6, 2009, 4:15 PM

In December, TiVo began to include advertisements in fast forward and pause states on its Series 2 DVRs. Yesterday, the ads reportedly began appearing on Series 3/TiVo HD units.

Users will have to upgrade their system software to version 11.0c for the advertisements to show up. TiVo community users who have received the update have not noticed any other changes besides these ads, which place a "more info about..." button on the pause screen.

Many users have said they fail to see how this software update constitutes a "feature upgrade."

I haven't received this update yet on my TivoHD, but I really don't care about the addition of some "more info" option when I pause. I think people are confusing this with TiVo filling the screen with some irrelevant advertising to boost their revenue, which is not my understanding.

What is the point of paying for a service now that we have to deal with ads. I could see if Tivo offered a non paying option and have ads, but if we are paying a monthly or lifetime fee, why should we be subject to watching these ads?

Moxi is starting to look alot better because granted it is more expensive to purchase, but no monthly fees and no advertising. It also has some pretty good features compaired to Tivo. Take a look http://moxi.com/us/home.html
I plan on switching from Tivo to Moxi once I save up enough to purchase it.

Reminds me of the last time I browsed a tech/gaming/PC mag, when they started splitting feature articles up to fit the ads into better placements - the books lost all value for me as a subscriber/potential subscriber (especially when you factor in internet+adblockers.) I for one hate to see a service like TiVo going in the same direction, slowly being taken over by ad revenue hungry directors.

This kills me! I pay a service fee and if that isn't enough, charge me more or let me go! The Tivo service that I signed up with had no ads, that is how I justified paying for it over an inferior Comcast or Dish DVR. If they keep throwing extra "features" like this at users, they will go the same way that AOL did when it covered its paid software with ads. If this keeps up I will go back to my supped up mac mini with eyeTV and an HDMI output.

Could be worse, if this were Apple, they'd probably have to pay for the upgrade. :)
