TomTom GPS to accept info from Google Maps

The GPS maker says that users of its service will be able to send business information from Google Maps to its devices through its 'Send To' feature.

Google's tie-in with TomTom is not bringing the Mountain View, Calif. company's mapping software to the device, but is rather giving users an easier way of navigating rather than having to go through multiple menus on the device itself to locate a destination.

Devices will be able to receive data when connected to the Internet using the TomTom HOME software. From there, the user can act on the information, such as saving it or getting directions to that location.

"The ability to search, find and send information from the Web to a TomTom is something we have been investing in for some time now," product management chief Eric Pite said.

While currently the Google Maps tie-in is the only application to take advantage of this, the company is planning to announce additional third-party partnerships in the future.

Google has already allowed for GPS navigation in its own Google Maps application for mobile phones. If a phone is GPS-enabled or can be paired with a GPS unit, Google Maps can use it to provide directions and location finding.

More information on the service can be found on TomTom's Web site.

I have always liked applications that take advantage of Google's hugely open APIs. Programmers and hardware makers that make this cross-compatibility available for such a popular application are bound to be at least partially successful.

I use software on my PDA called GPSMeter and it lets me keep track of geological information and sampling. This software also has both ways compatibility with the Google Earth KML format so I can collect my data on my GPS enabled PDA and then move it to Google Earth to maintain and present it.

I like this idea, had a navigation system from garmin and just to warn everyone there listings can be really out of date. So good luck and smart move for TomTom to team up with Google Maps, but hopefully it will work on all TomTom devices no matter the model.
