Touchscreen Zune touches down
By Tim Conneally | Published May 27, 2009, 12:18 AM

The new Zune's HD qualities are twofold. First, it contains a built-in HD radio for receiving terrestrial multicasts, and second, it will have an HDMI-equipped dock for 720p high definition video output.
Though these are the qualities that give the device its "HD" name, they are somewhat overshadowed by the Zune's other new features: the upgrade to a multi-touch interface, support for full Web browsing, and Xbox Live integration.
Zune HD is equipped with a 3.3" (480x272) 16:9 widescreen OLED touchscreen. It will include a full-screen Web browser optimized for multi-touch gestures, with zooming initiated by tapping, accelerometer-based screen swap, and a soft keyboard. It has not been announced if it is a unique edition of Internet Explorer Mobile, or if it is the same as that which will be packaged with Windows Mobile 6.5, or if it is another browser entirely.
The Xbox Live Video Marketplace, which has been up and running for for more than two and a half years will now prominently feature the Zune brand. Microsoft has not provided further detail on the Zune's integration with Xbox Live, as Redmond intends to spotlight the new functionality at E3. Redmond used the annual video game industry convention last year to announce the addition of Netflix and NBC Universal streaming content to the Xbox Live Video Marketplace in its update to what it called the New Xbox Experience.
Pricing, capacity, and launch details have not yet been disclosed, but the Zune HD is expected to be available worldwide by Fall 2009.

It may look nice and it may work ok, but it is that touch screen thing again. I hate touch screens.

|For operating the device, I really don't have a problem with touchscreens...
It's when they're the only option for typing that gets my ire up. I hate touchscreen keyboards.

|Yeah, but can I sync it with MediaMonkey? The one thing I HATE about the Zune is the way it forces me to use the crappy Zune software. I really like MediaMonkey and use it exclusively to manage my library...Microsoft forcing me to use the Zune software is almost convincing me to get something not so restrictive.
At least DosBox 0.73 came out...back to playing Ultima 4....

|Here's my problem. I have two f**got iPods and five different docks for direct control plus a touch screen in my dash with direct iPod control.
The new touch screen Zune looks great and it's not Apple which is a plus but we already invested hundreds into docking and controlling these turds remotely. I would have no reason to buy one. ****ers.

|I never thought I would want a zune but I like the HD Radio feature. I hope they will support rhapsody or some other rental music service.

|This product has for some reason caught my attension. Even though I don't need it as I already have an iphone 3G. I want to know more about it. If they were to nail the integration into xbox live/market place it might be a killer. My only concern is if we were to buy an hd movie xbox live and then transfer it over will it be processed on the fly so the little guy can actually play it? Or will they have a weaker "Zune HD" version available? And for that matter will you have to repurchase it? The hd radio thing is kickass! Integrated web browser ... Ummm better nail it! And not just throw it into the pot and stir it in at the last second.

|I see the photocopiers at Microsoft have been hard at work....this sure looks like a cheapo knock off of certain companies product... Wonder if they will have anti-virus and anti-spyware for it? Or have arbitrarily stripped down, super expensive OS'es for it? Microsoft Zune HD Ultimate. ROFL. Oh wait, the products are so bad they won't even put their name on them.

|Ooh... Another troll from fathead that makes zero sense.
"looks like a cheapo knock off of certain companies product"
Looks like what? The iPod? Makes one wonder if you've actually ever seen an iPod, since being rectangular is about the only similarity they share.
"Wonder if they will have anti-virus and anti-spyware for it? Or have arbitrarily stripped down, super expensive OS'es for it?"
Probably not before the iPhone does.
One has to wonder if it's even possible for you to make a post that *isn't* pure BS.

|PC_Tool, come on, fatty has a few good points. You're as much of a troll as anybody here.

|???
What points? He made 3.
1.) It looks like the iPod. No, it doesn't. Google both, put the images side-by-side. Other than the shape (common to nearly every device out there) they look nothing alike.
2.) That it would need anti-virus/anti-spyware software. It's laughable, but that's about all. Even the "iPhone viruses" are a joke.
3.) That it would come with arbitrarily stripped down, overpriced OSes...when was the last time *anyone* bought an OS for a PMP device? Thought not...
Yeah...valid points? What thread are you reading?
As for me being a troll, how did I respond? I took each "point" and provided the basis upon which it is, in my opinion, utter BS. How does *he* normally respond? Well, just look at his post. Utter puerile BS...likely to be soon followed by an oh-so "clever for a 3rd-grader" insult.
Valid point? When confronted with a poster who can actually engage in intelligent conversation, I do so. When confronted with the likes of fathead and DbBen, well...about all they're good for is public humiliation and ridicule.

|Well actually, point 1 and 2 is kinda true, no? That Zune HD may not look "identical" to the iPod Touch, true, but Apple did propel touchscreen into the mainstream after all. We could say the same for the Blackberry Storm; may not look exactly like the iPhone but certainly the fact that touchscreen is so mainstream, thanks to Apple, did inspire RIM to enter the market.
Yes, that it would need anti-spyware and anti-virus is laughable...a little jab at Microsoft's expense is very common in the industry ;)

|Morsel you know as well as, if not better than everyone else, PC_Tool just does not get it. Look at the link he posts...to an iphone trojan installed by, get this...jailbreaking your iphone and installing a malicious program. He is the same person who thinks Macs have viruses like the swiss cheese Windows based computers. Watch, he will post a link to the cracked version of iLife which someone trojanized and say OSX is unsafe. LOL.
Maybe he will watch HD on his less than HD resolution monitor and think the picture looks good. ROFL. I am still laughing about that one.

|Holy Christ this may be your only competent thought ever! Congratulations you can say more then the same rhetoric over and over. Except... you are still the same Leopard who just can't change their spots.
Point 1 as you and Morsel for some unknown reason believe you are right for reasons only a fanboy could explain...
OMG its rectangular and has touch screen that means they copied! Are you kidding me, this is the best you got? The Palm Pilot was square and had a touch screen too and as you know it predated the Apple touchscreen by a decade. The HP IPaq was square and had a touch screen too, ran windows mobile and also predated the Ipod. Hell even the Nintendo DS had touchscreen before Apple, should we go on and on about how Apple copied Nintendo because they are trying to make the Iphone into a portable game console?
The problem is both devices were not heavily marketed to let the public know they exist but the Nintendo DS was quite a success, who's to say Apple didn't get the touch idea from them, also MIcrosoft Surface which I am sure you are aware of is also a form of touch which has been being worked on since 2001. The movie Minority Report got its ideas from Microsoft and you can see the proof by listening to the commentary on the dvd with Steven Spielberg.
Point 2 - it will need virus and spyware protection. See now you are being a moron because Windows Mobile doesn't require the following either and has been around for quite some time.
Point 3 - Has to be the worst yet, you don't buy an OS for a PMP device, at least come up with a real reason instead of using the tried and failed retorts ad nauseum.
Now if you actually were objective and could have a conversation like a rational adult you might have something, but alas you rather act like a 4 year old.
What separates the Ipod, Zen, Sansa, Zune and all the other players out there is the SOFTWARE, its the only reason the Ipod was able to succeed because they took an idea from creative but gave it a more sensible interface, apple didn't reinvent the wheel, they just took the wheel and added better rims to it.
Now MS has been providing FREE updates to their device since Zune debuted 3 years ago, hate them for whatever childish reason you want the fact remains they are continually improving the device.
Now I am sure you'll come back with some witty one-liner or ignore everything and post the immature rebuttal I expect from you.
With this update it appears the zune/xbox live will be as one service - this may mean nothing to you but to the 17 million people out there on Live it does..
As explained earlier the software on the Zune is completely different from Apple's in every way, it behaves like windows media center does.
The device will be able to output video to a tv at 720p
There will be HD Radio
Video, pictures, Music...etcetc
Also rumored the games it will play will either be xbox arcade games or ones built for the device exclusively.
Plus possible streaming from the xbox itself and other additions that will be brought up during the E3 conference.
This may not appeal to you but you can't argue that that kind of integration would really help the Zune get out there to a lot more people.

@fatty:
1. The link I posted was to Google.
2. If a virus, regardless of how obtained, can exploit a system, is it *not* the system's fault? (We know....in the case of Mac OSX, it's not, but for Windows, it is...you're bias is infinitely amusing)
3.) HD resolution? You're too funny. Show me how those 6-bit depth Apple monitors have a higher color depth and resolution than any of mine. Please...you're such a joke.
