'Transformers' Sets Hi-Def Sales Record

Although the reviews were lackluster, Michael Bay's Transformers has become the fastest selling title on HD DVD. More than 100,000 copies of the movie sold in the first day and over 190,000 in the first week, setting a record that beat every title on both HD DVD and rival format Blu-ray.

The HD DVD Promotions Group says the success of Transformers has shown the importance of standalone players, the area where the format is beating Blu-ray due to lower prices. Still, HD DVD sales paled in comparison to over 4.5 million copies of the movie sold on regular DVD on its first day of release. 8.3 million units on DVD have sold since October 16, over 43 times the number sold on HD DVD.

It's funny all the complaints back and forth. The fact is, that Toshiba is not so confident in their bid on HD. Microsoft is giving up on their player for 360s. HD DVD is dying out, and Blu-Ray is looking like its a winner. You won't find HD DVD in Target, and I noticed in the local Best Buy that there wasn't any HD DVD anymore, but loads of Blu-Ray. Why has Blu-Ray won? Because of the PS3, and because Microsoft was greedy, and didn't build in the HD DVD player. Just as with the first XBOX, they wanted to make more money.

both formats suck, i want something just as good if not better, but as one format only...

LOOK at VHS! - DVD - 8TRACK - VINAL - CD - only one type of format, that did their jobs when they were needed..

replace it with one format.. neither hd dvd or bluray should win.. both are not acceptable

Que la fregada pues...until a human being isn't able to submerge into a virtual world in entertainment, pinche sound and video will always be the same, so F!! HD-DVD and BLU-RAY. Standard DVD is still the best way to go kids, why pay for something YOU FOOLS think is any different!!!!????!?!?!?!?!

Michael Bay was quoted saying "I drank the Kool-Aid" meaning the BD execs got him drunk after dinner and beraded him for hours until he posted it on his blog, while drunk.

Wow, Davey is under the impression that its 4:1. Damn Davey its gone to from 4:1 to 2:1 in 10 hours... I guess that turnaround will come much quicker than I though, tee hee.

LOL, all kidding aside. 2:1 seems a little too close. Thanks for the link, I'll be looking for other sources to fully justify the 2:1 ratio.

There isn't one person in here you could listen to this movie and tell me it's uncompressed audio or not. Nobody can actually tell the difference, the human ear can barely distinguish 10% distortion (yes that's correct, 10%)

All of you wannabe "audiophiles" are completely full of crap. Dolby Digital, dts, and Dolby HD and dts Master Audio all sound the same. Especially on your home theater in a box surround system.

Dave / Steve is always complaining about uncompressed audio not being on titles except that pathetic picture he posted of his system doesn't even have a center channel.

War of the Worlds is another eye/ear candy movie to rival Tranformers.

If you can divide simple numbers the ratio of BD to HD-DVD movies sold to date is 3 to 2. Simplified, it's a 1.5 to 1 ratio.

Looks like your lies about sales have been debunked by your own fanboy site, Dave.

I'm not sure I'd go that far, especially on the visual side. Transformers has some of the best eye candy I've seen in a while. I cannot wait until I can enjoy the high-def version for myself.

Aurally though, it's pretty close. The storm scene and the aliens coming out of the ground... that's one of the reference scenes that I use to showcase my modest sound system to others, and to show how much better DTS can be.

The funniest thing I've seen about this movie on HD DVD is the tragic way the Sony/PS3/Blu-ray shill-drone-fanboys cling to their completely misunderstood BS about quality.

Specifically the audio quality (well, they can't say Jack Sh*te about the - excellent - image quality afterall).

They discovered it was 'only' going to be Dolby Digital +.

Note the '+' (plus) that means it's not the same as vanilla Dolby Digital.
.....and that this means it is of use to & appeals to all but the tiny percentage that aren't lying about having receivers able to properly use audio standards that are higher than that.

Unfortunately for a bunch of barely literate spec-sheet jockey kiddies that doesn't mean 'uncompressed audio' so it must be worse than it might have been had it come out on Blu-ray, right?

Wrong.

"Everything about this (audio) track just screams "REFERENCE!"
and it holds up easily to the best PCM and True HD mixes that I have heard.

Not only have Viacom/Paramount set new records for high def disc sales but they did it without the much higher costs Blu-ray imposes = bigger and better profitability.

You can bet others will be looking at this and doing the sums for themselves.

Quite frankly i'm amazed at the people who are not buying it simply because it does not have uncompressed audio.
I have not seen the movie in any format but by all means its getting bloody good scores in audio everywhere I have read.

The Transformers DVD has some of the best audio I've heard since the Collector's Edition of Serenity in DTS.

I can only imagine what the DD+ mix sounds like if the vanilla Dolby Digital is this good.

It's true. Niether HD format will come close to S-DVD numbers for at least ten years. I see HD movies whether it be BD or HD-DVD as a way to enjoy the movies that desrve to be HD.

Eye candy summer blockbusters with special effects, action movies, etc.. Not Trading Places and Blades of Glory type crap.

I guess I would have to be in the minority as well. Though I thought Transformers was a pretty good movie on the action front (for which Bay is pretty well-known), I still had numerous issues with it... as well as most of the "blockbusters" out there.

I think Serenity was the last truly incredible movie I remember seeing in the theater and buying on DVD. There have been others that were good for a break from the mundane, but not much replay value.

2nd...I was also able to scrape together enough for an HDTV with the PS3...haha..

1. Here are the facts, you are Dave, which means you are also Steve and Joey, you already admitted you work at a game or electronics chain.

There is one major difference between Metfanant and the "Dave Smurfs" that litter this site:

Metfanant actually isn't afraid to debate facts and the finer points of both formats, as he has done in the past. He may post links to some of the more common pro-Blu-ray 'articles of the day' occasionally, but at least he doesn't run and hide when challenged to support his claims. When he does respond, it's usually of a level of maturity that is nowhere to be found with the gibberish of the Dave clones.

We may disagree, but I do respect him for that.

lackluster reviews? i loved that movie. the one thing it was missing was a better experience when it finally got to imax. i hate watching movies where the framerates of standard theaters and projectors wont keep up with panning shots. everyones panties are all in a knot over the detail of BD over HD and the so called BD "fans of superior quality" are rubbing their honey holes over the sound compression? get real. If there was any true sense to any of these arguments, people would be in an uproar about the crappy choppy panning that happens in every hifi movie i've seen since birth. star wars, transformers, whatever. panning = im going epileptic. fix the real issues and stop pointing at retarded "certified formats."

I do have to thank Dave for multiposting his garbage here. The best thing he is doing is turning people off to BD and the PS3 instead of somehow convincing them this junk is better.

Actually, the PS3 is a nice gaming machine with a low failure rate, but what about when people turn them on and actually start using them?

We all know BD is an unfinished format with an uncertain future for early adopters and a major studio and it siblings just jumped ship for a bag full of money.

if i get anything, it would have to be irresistible or unavoidable. If they do end up bundling HD drives with the 360, i might get one then. maybe. for now, i like my existing dvd player that upscales, plays mpegs, avis, divx, etc. no reason to upgrade.

Tranformers on HD-DVD is by far the best movie you can get for either format.

Of course the people with a PS3, 42" DLP and no surround sound wouldnt know anything about good sound and picture ..... right Dave?

Why would they need to sell it on Blu Ray, they already got thier 150 million to cover the cost of every BD and HD-DVD movie sold to date, times two, or three actually.

First of all any format that has interactivity and is not connected via ethernet is simply an interactive CD-ROM or BD-ROM in this case.

You claim it will be "vastly superior" to HD-DVD's HDi, yet the BD spec doesn't call for an ethernet port until profile 2.0

You need to explain to me as well as everyone else how an interactive CD-ROM feature being added is somehow better than internet based interactivity like HDi.

It's a story about how Terminator 3 will be relased with the crippled PIP that forces movie studios to limit one half of the discs storage for the movie, and the other half for the same exact movie with PIP.

It's pathetic. But what's even more pathetic is the comments from the fanboys.

Some of them went on to say "We don't need features, I just want to see the movie" The same exact jagoff who said a week before "I can't wait for profile 1.1 so we can finally shut up these HD-DUD fanboys"

Based on the 3:1 sales of Blu-ray over HD DVD in US, 4:1 in Europe, and 9:1 in Japan, Paramount must be feeling quick sick right now.

Imagine how many copies would have been sold on Blu-ray. I wonder how the feel throwing away half a million plus Blu-ray sales.. I hope that Paramount backhander was worth it..

I'm sure they considered that before making a switch. But alas, unlike you, they think in terms of future potential. That ratio might be 4:1, but eventually it will be 3:1 , 1:1 , and then tragically for Sony the ratio will switch over in Hd-DVD's favor.

My best guess is roughly a year, before things turn around.

And I'm sure this will happen once this happens.

Well it's currently going the wrong way.

Europe and Japan are lost. They have gone from around 2:1 this time last year, to 4:1 and 9:1 in Blu-ray favor.

In US, it's gone from 1:2 to 2:1 in Blu-ray favor in the last 18 months.

When is this mythical turnaround going to happen?

Wasn't the PS3 released after the stand alone players? That explains your initial turn around. Just be patient, it will happen. You can quote me on that.

Apparently the 5+ million PS3 consoles don't count as much as you would hope, as the software sales are only 2:1 in favor of Blu-ray over HD DVD.

If it makes you feel better, we can include them from now on. I just figured we were all doing you a favor by helping to not make BD look as bad as it already is.

...and for the record, Spiderman 3 sucked out loud (I'd almost say Spawn was better). It had a boring story that dragged on, with fight scenes that were an absolute joke... camera angles shifting so fast making it almost impossible to determine what was going on. The kids can have that one...
