Twitter hooks up with Google, Bing

By Tim Conneally | Published October 21, 2009, 6:06 PM

WIthin hours of one another, Microsoft and Google announced that their respective search engines would begin indexing tweets from popular microblogging service Twitter.

Microsoft was first on the scene, when Redmond's President of Online Services Division Qi Lu announced the beta of Bing.com/twitter had opened at the Web 2.0 summit today. The beta provides a real-time index of tweets, and the ability to rank tweets according to its relevance.

"If you want to keep an eye on [a] topic, you can just watch the Tweets roll in. Or, click on 'See more Tweets about...' to go to a page full of Tweets. On that page, you can change the ordering to 'Best Match.' Here we arrange Tweets differently. If someone has a lot of followers, his/her Tweet may get ranked higher. If a tweet is exactly the same as other Tweets, it will get ranked lower," Paul Yiu of the Bing Social Search Team blogged this morning.

Then, Google's Vice President of Search and User Experience Marissa Mayer followed up with a quick and casual announcement that, oh yeah, Google can do that too.

Mayer is also expected to give a presentation at the Web 2.0 summit where more details are sure to be disclosed. But Bing has fully beaten Google to the punch, since the Mountain View, CA search giant doesn't actually have a product to show for its agreement with Twitter yet. Mayer said, "We look forward to having a product that showcases how tweets can make search better in the coming months."

No- it's around for a while. But since it's used more by consumers than business users, I think opening it up will allow for some interesting consumer level products. In the enterprise, it's all about eliminating .pst files because of all of the technical and legal hurdles they present.

I can tell you that there is new competition coming from a new social business network marketing site that is the new paradigm s***. It is from a company called hellohello.net. There is a reason why these companies are joining forces. They do not have the capability of creating there own with there level of technology.

Wow, all the hype about twiter... I cannot understand, it is the most primitive and limited social network available and still, all media is inflating it all the time... Why it that?

I did artfuldodga, but comparing the technology to Facebook (or even myspace) I think twiter does not have a chance. Still, the media talk about it all the time.
Anyone is able to receive updates from facebook trough smss, which also offer better services. What is the point with twiter?

speed, real time updates, and to the point.

the flow is faster if the user just write a few words to get the idea out. you don't have to wait until the user writes a long explanation to get his point across, the compact format has the idea of the user in a few seconds since he thought of it, also, some users don't want to spend lots of time writing what they want to say, just a few words and let's go, keep moving.

twitter is more fluid.

Bad news to the web publishers who have got constant search engine traffic. They are going to face more competition. Tweets are getting in the games and get ranked on first pages of Google search result.
