Two New Sidekicks for T-Mobile

Motorola Sidekick SlideT-Mobile's growing line of Sidekicks now includes the LX and the Slide, produced by Sharp and Motorola respectively, to be made available in coming weeks.

Sharp's LX claims to be slimmer than the Sidekick 3, though spec sheets reveal they share the .9" thickness when closed. Its weight, however, has been knocked down from the previous 7 ounces to a much more manageable 5.7. LX has a 3-inch WQVGA display that is thinner and mounted on an improved swivel joint. Its entire outer edge can be set to glow at varying colors and speeds as a status indicator. Beginning October 17th for existing customers, the LX will be available for $299 USD and a 2-year contract commitment.

Both new Sidekicks are almost a matched pair, with the Motorola Slide having slightly fewer features and a screen that slides directly upward, as opposed to the swivel featured on the other models. The Slide will be available on November 7th for $199 and a 2-year commitment.

Sharp's Sidekick LXBoth models support GSM/EDGE and Bluetooth, and come equipped with 1.3 MP cameras (LX comes with its own flash), microSD expandable memory, plus the standard Sidekick communications software with the new mobile MySpace app.

T-Mobile's previous addition of the budget-priced Sidekick ID increased the brand's footprint, helping place it into the hands of celebrities and text-frenzied hipsters who give it visibility.

T-Mobile is cheap ($40/mo you get *everything* except inet for that fee) and has really good coverage and clarity in the Los Angeles area. And that's why I have been with them for 6 years.

is no one else amused by the effort that motorola put into making the thing shine like a sony product yet they left the UI an unthemed highly contrasting turd of a display?

the screens are smaller than i thought they'd be after seeing the preproduction photos. for the price, this is no kind of iphone and with the feature set, as a sk2 and sk3 owner, i think this is going to break the cycle for me personally. I was extremely disappointed with the feature set on the sk3 and by the looks of things i'm guess this is just as lamed. at minimum i should be able to listen to music on my bluetooth headset, not just answer and place calls, and the fact that it supports themeing the UI but doesn't allow you to theme the UI is well past lame. There's 0 support for the bluetooth to connect using a mac. just glancing at this it actually looks like they made the screen SMALLER on the motorola version. how is that better?

what i think is funniest is that (and my gf pointed this out who is a complete tech noob) the photos they have displayed on these PR shots show perfect pictures with awesome lighting and you NEVER get even CLOSE to that kind of picture let alone can you display it if you do. the screen are bottom of the barrel in quality and other than the IM client (which is the only saving grace this phone has ever had) this thing is a brick out of the box. i use mine literally 3 times a week at best.

Same here, I think this is gonna break the cycle for me. I've been a sidekick owner since Color. Since that time there havent been any major features (except java and msn) to the device. I will eventually buy this because of the bad shape my current kick is in, but my contract is up next year, I think it may be time for me to move on.

i'll sell you mine for cheap when yours dies. it only has one noticable ding and i noobishly bought a 2gb memory stick for it thinking i could use it as an ipod stand in, so you'd have tons of space.
