Ubisoft to get Gameloft's Indian studio

International video game company Ubisoft has entered into an agreement with mobile games company Gameloft to acquire its development studio in Pune, India.

The facility, with a staff of 120 developers and testers has been responsible for creating games for both the PSP and the Nintendo DS, notably releasing the DS version of Assassin's Creed. Ubisoft said it intends to increase the staff to 200 by the end of this year, and looks to have as many as 500 working at the facility in the future.

In July of 2007, Ubisoft sold its 18 percent stake in Gameloft, but said the two would continue to work on Ubisoft's brands on mobile phones. The two French companies have released a number of titles since this equity swap took place, both for mobile phone platforms, and for consoles.

Ubisoft's CFO Alain Martinez said at the time, "We are confident in Gameloft's capacity for growth...This [equity swap] enables us to inform the market of our exit strategy and to stagger the market placement of the Gameloft shares in order to continue to benefit from the company's development potential over the next two years."
