Update: Microsoft Hasn't Sold 1 Million Zunes

By Ed Oswald, BetaNews

Update ribbon (small)

5:00 pm ET May 29, 2007 - Microsoft now says the San Francisco Chronicle misquoted Robbie Bach, and explains that while it is still on track to sell one million Zunes by the end of June, it hasn't done so just yet.

Cesar Menendez, a product manager for Zune, announced the mistake on the Zune Insider blog Tuesday. However, he does note that, "we've achieved our goal of being the number 2 player in the hard-drive category."

Microsoft is celebrating Tuesday, as the company beat its goal of shipping one million units of the Zune music player several days before its June target, the San Francisco Chronicle reports.

The player holds about 10 percent of the hard drive based music player market, although overall its market share is around 3 percent. Nonetheless, Microsoft is still happy with its progress.

In comparison, Apple has sold about 25 million iPods during the same period, with nearly 11 million of them being sold in the last quarter. Apple took over a year and a half to reach its first 1 million shipments.

Microsoft Entertainment and Devices president Robbie Bach said reaching the milestone was "a good start," but stopped short of calling it a huge success. "I'm not going to pretend it's some gigantic move," he told the paper.

Expect to see new Zune players in the fall, including flash memory based devices, say sources. The market is important for Microsoft to enter; consumers prefer flash devices, and if the Redmond company wants to increase its market share, that would be the easiest way.

However, there will be no "Zune Phone," Bach says. Microsoft is comfortable with its current offerings in the mobile music space and plans to work with manufacturers to develop software for those purposes.

My friends, (I do include CarLox in this salutation), at the risk of repeating myself. The sooner we have an MS Barcode tatoo'd on our foreheads(patents permitting), the better it will be for all.
Then, we will not have this kind of contrary thinking, of which there seems to be too much of here now.
C'mon MS,this kind of thinking is unnatural.

The Zune has potential, it needs a better marketing campaign and to fix the issues with the first version as well as up the ante on the new ones. It is a great player and I personally think the sound is better, Ipod was not golden when it first came out so anything is possible in round 2.

They could have 900,000 units in retail warehouses and gathering dust on the shelves, and still claim they have sold 1,000,000 units...

Why would a retailer order so many units if they are just sitting on shelves? MS just doesn't send Zunes to any retailer as they are manufactured.

Ive only gotten a glance at the zune so i can't say if its good or not either. i can say however that i dont like the look of it (the case of it).

Zune.. Ipod.. Just standard music players that cost more cause of the brand name, nothing more! I had a mp3 player i got free for signing up for napster, held 1GB and it was awesome. Did everything i wanted it too (tell i lost it lol) Why would you want to pay $100+ on a music player when you can spend about $50-60 for the same features?

Sounds like The Macintosh Market share - macbook has 10% of the laptop market but the overall market share is not much better than 3% (I think around 4.5%)

Just something to think about. 3 years from now the ZUNE will have a much higher market share in the portable music bit than the MAC will have with PC's. (for the record I think the Zune is a POS)

Not even remotely the same thing. It's not like you can't buy a Zune because your games don't run on it now, is it? :p

Zune v iPod is a simple comparison: which one is a better music player?

Mac v Windows is not simple: if it was, most people would agree OS X is a superior UI. Fact is though, I can't switch because I love my games. And it's the same for most people.

Next time, try a comparison of devices/products without dependencies, would you? :P

I am surprised Microsoft marketing settled for number 2 when they could have just added some more qualifications.

Of course not, because it's Microsoft! If it were any other company, they would deserve a pat on the back at least. I haven't tried a Zune yet, so I can't say if it's good or bad, but to say 2nd place means nothing makes you look silly.

"Apple took over a year and a half to reach its first 1 million shipments."

Hmm, there's something to think about. I'm getting a bit tired of constantly hearing about Apple being the undisputed world champion of portable music players with an unbreakable grip on the market. Someone needs to slay this iPod dragon already. I don't care if it's Microsoft or even Sony. I'm sick of these yuppies and idiots running around, flashing their iPods like it's the greatest thing since sliced bread. It's just a music player, nothing to email home about.

"They are the number 1 Heavy, brown, hard-drive equiped, wi-fi enabled, MP3 players with 3 day DRM self destructing music."

Heavy? Like I said, I haven't had a chance to check out a Zune, but out of the many many players I did check out, the iPod was by *far* the heaviest. Brown? It comes in more than one color. Hard-drive equipped? So is the iPod. Wi-Fi enabled? The iPod isn't, so how is this a negative? Yes, yes, we all agree how horrible DRM is, but wait a minute, doesn't the iPod have its own DRM? That's what I thought. Try harder next time.

- It is heavier then the iPod. Most reviews I've read say it also. Feeling it myself you can notice it feels a bit more weighty. (Remember to compare also the storage size of the unit)

- As for HD equiped.. iPods have non HD equiped ones.

- He said '3 day DRM self destructing music." Nice of you to take things out of context.

But hey, as you said.. "Try harder next time."

As for your the point about the seeing someone else levelling out the field a bit more. I would love to see someone come out with a great easy to use music plays like the iPod.. Just have to wait and see. Microsoft is the most likely/is to be a good challenger to the iPod.

Yes, the 30, 60 and 80 gig iPods are HD equiped. Newegg linkage Click on Specifications and look under Features.

"I would love to see someone come out with a great easy to use music plays like the iPod.."

Cowon!

My favorite being the iAudio X5 60gb.

Features I like over an iPod:
- USB Mass Storage: Just plug it in and it shows up as a hard drive. No software, no drivers, no DRM, no iTunes needed. It just works. You can copy your music on and off of it how ever you want. This also makes it Windows, Mac and Linux compatible.
- MP3, Ogg, Flac and WMA support (with or without Rockbox, though with Rockbox you don't get WMA support)
- 95db SNR (Signal to Noise Ratio) sound quality, which is good... compared to the iPods 86db SNR
- 20mW+20mW Earphone Output: It can put out a decent amount of bass if you want it to with the equalizers and with BBE's Mach3Bass. Especially if you use high quality earphones, like my favorite Sennheiser PX-100 earphones.
- FM tuner/recorder
- Line In and Built-In Mic for recording
- Line Out for my car and home stereo
- Another feature (that I don't use much) is the USB host feature that allows you to connect your digital camera (though usb) and off load the memory card

they're pretty cool. you can sit them on their square edge to watch your tiny little movies on them which you cant do with an iPhone. i guess with the limited space on the iPhone they're probably not pushing it as a video device anyway. maybe the official video ipod will sit on its side, or maybe it will just sit on is thrown and not include simple features that the others seem to (like AM/FM radio). I think that would be a pretty cool feature along with a full screen on one side of the device. its bad enough you have to watch the program on 2 inch screen, but then you're also staring at a menu at the same time. im getting old waiting for a screen big enough for old people

Microsoft may very well have sold that many zune's. But they are not in the hands of customers I would assume. They are sitting on shelves, pallets in warehouses and store shelves, yes microsoft got paid for them so technically they are sold but ask any retailer if they are flying off the shelves, I think not.

The sad thing is if this wasn't a Microsoft product we would not even be talking about it now. It would not be worth the storage space to post this story on the server.
