'Up-to-Date' Snow Leopard customers aren't getting what they paid for

By Tim Conneally | Published August 28, 2009, 1:21 PM

The Mac OS X Snow Leopard Up-to-Date program promised users who bought a qualifying Mac or Xserve on or after June 8th of this year an automatic upgrade from Leopard to Snow Leopard for only $9.95.

However, it appears that Apple is only shipping out full versions of the operating system upgrade today, and not the Up-to-Date versions. As to be expected, customers who put in their orders months ago are expressing 140 characters worth of displeasure all over Twitter this afternoon.

"Like others, I'm confused why Apple didn't ship Snow Leopard to Up-To-Date customers to arrive 8/28. My delivery is expected 9/01 to 9/04," one user wrote.

"Maybe Steve Jobs is sealing every up-to-date Snow Leopard order with a kiss. Only logical explanation why my order hasn't shipped," wrote another.

Yet another said, "Whew, glad I ordered two copies of Snow Leopard. Only the retail shipped, the 'Up to Date' program copy has not..."

"Expected Product Availability" on the Up-to-Date site now simply says "September 2009."

Shock horror, Apple fails to prioritise users not paying full retail price for an OS upgrade!

Well, now if you're an up to date customer then you don't need a Snow Leopard DVD now do you. Only customers who aren't up to date need this.

This article is false. Right on the Apple's site it says you can order it to arrive in the mail or you can pick it up at your local Apple store. Who the hell cares about getting it 5 days later in the mail if you pre-ordered it or ordered 2,3 ,4,5 or a week ago. You will eventually get it. 10.5 is working pretty well and I am sure you can wait a couple of days to upgrade to 10.6. Come one people cry me a river, build a bridge and get over it!!!

I realized I fell in this category, bought my first mac july 20, and 28th i "pre-ordered" the up2date OS. I waited a month! lol come to find out any "joe" on the street can pick it up before me! lol 2 funny

funny, yet glad this article was posted, I didnt have a place to b**** yesterday and I dont have twitter lol

Come on guys - give it a friggin break! What do you expect for $9.95, anyway? You will get the software and you'll be in time to have bragging rights for being "among the first" to have it. What difference can two or three days make anyway? I got my copy of it two days ago and still haven't bothered to install it yet on our machines at home. I'll wait for the .01 or .02 version before doing so. Remember, cutting edge is often the bleeding edge, too!

I have never drunk the Apple kool-aid, but really, 5 days? Boo hoo! Get a grip! Is Leopard so terrible you can't put up with it for another year or another month?

While i'm no apple apologist, ANyone saying that microsoft does better is just plain wrong in this case, as Win 7 is set to be released on the 22nd of October, and Microsoft has already informed me that i'll be getting my copy on or around November 2nd, whereas I ordered Snow Leopard for my macs 2 days ago and have already received the discs.

Strange. I received my copies of Windows 7 the day they were released to manufacturing.

Of course, I have also received my Snow Leopard, so there's really no negative spin on either there.

Technet subscriptions are great. $250 a year for every OS, application, server tool they produce. I really wish Apple had a similar deal. I'd love to try and set up an OS X network to rival my Windows one, though I fear with the best of both worlds at my fingertips 24/7 I would likely never leave the house again.

I thought the Tech Net availability of the RTM build was a downloadable copy and not a mailed disc. which would be a whole different animal, But i was referring to the actual retal copy not the RTM, I used to subscribe to MSDN years ago, and yes, having every OS was definately sweet. I don't really mind the delay, Just had to say that in this case for me, Apple did the better job. I dont really care one way or the other as i use both Macs and PC's

If you join the Apple Developers forum or association at anything other than the absolutely free level, you will get updates of every piece of software, OS, and more. All shipped out as soon as it goes GM, and you'll get it before the public gets their copies in general. As for the almost GM betas, etc., your web site access will allow you to download most of their soon-to-go-gm builds too! It's a great deal if you run a Mac Shop and need access to their latest and greatest all the time, and before it's released to the public. As I remember it's very very cheap, too. Far less than Windows Tech Web Service subscriptions and it covers more, too!

Depends on the version of TechNet that you have. I have the Single User version, where I get the DVDs as well as the ISOs.

The difference of course being that while windows 7 is a new operating system, Snow Leopard is essentially a Service Pack. Microsoft's service packs are always a free download.

Where are you seeing these prices?

Technet renewal is ~$250 (yearly), the monthly mailing of Apple ADC is $199 (per month) and ADC Select is $499(yearly), according to this [developer.apple.com].

So you don't get to be the first kid on the block to have Snow Leopard on your machine. Cry me a river LOL. Nobody is perfect, not even Apple. (I apologize to the Mac lemmings, er users, who take offense to that last sentence) Call Apple and demand a pro-rated refund for 5-8 days worth of your time.

Meh. It's only a few extra days. In that time I'll let the guinea pigs find all the problems.

It's funny, when I pre-ordered Windows 2000, XP and Vista, all three arrived on the street date with REGULAR shipping selected as the shipping method. What's funnier, most products where I pre-order ship-to-arrive the date of release to include various music albums, movies, and games. Not a fan of any OS/platform in particular (Use what works for you and makes you happy) but this does not seem like a good move to the OS X users who pre-ordered well in advance for snow leopard. My Macbook Pro can wait, but still....

This isn't about Apple, this is about whiny losers who can't wait one week for their update.

It isn't about waiting one week for an update. Apple still fails to confirm receipt of my faxed order which was sent 4 business days ago. I have the fax receipt, and Apple says they are backlogged. I would appreciate some honesty in the situation. On the order page, Apple says they will ship within 24 hours of receipt of the order. 4 business days clearly fails this promise.

Now I'd just as soon go purchase the software at retail if I have to and get it done with. However, as it stands, Apple has somewhere within the bowels of their beast, my order form with credit card info. It seems they feel they have the right to hold on to it until some unknown time in the future, and then enter it into their system and charge me for the software.

I would not normally do business with a company this cavalier about delivery timetables after promising prompt shipment, but since Apple is the only game in town for software updates, I guess I'll have to put up with it.

Note to Apple: Don't promise what you can't deliver.
