UPDATE: This thread is now closed. After receiving hundreds of comments on older articles from people begging to be invited into the Windows Live Messenger beta test, we've listened to the demand and have 35 invitations to give to you, our readers. Want to be one of the selected few?

It's easy; all you need to do is leave a comment on this article with a short explanation of a feature you'd like to see added in Windows Vista (we will obtain your e-mail internally to avoid spam concerns). Over the weekend, we will select the most creative and interesting feature ideas, and send those users invitations to join Microsoft's newest Messenger beta.

Well some of you probably already know what it is like but I give you a little recap here! you can send messages offline. You can be invisable and still conversate, you can preform remote connectoins as well as run remote virus scans/port security scans/spyware scans, ect. You have the ability to make landline phone calls at realy inexpensive rates ect. you will love this new and improved version of messenger! Also you can invite multiple people to a single conversation but that is not a new feature!

Possibly a variety of themes to use, rather than use programs like styles xp.

OH and voice activation for those with microfones. for example. instead of having to look for the programs you want or music files, and pictures (which i hate because i have gigs of it ) you should hold down like alt + shift and it prompts you to speak into the microfone and you just say the name of the file you are lookin for. like you can add voice taggs to you files. eg . add the voice tag "rap" to the song called rap and then hold alt + shift and say rap into the microfone and a window appears with all the files that contain rap as the voice tag.

I would not like WLM, i can get that elsewhere. I would like to put everything to rest about this article though. First off: You do NOT want another lame WFW. You certainly don't want WAS, and you really shouldn't be suggesting things that XP is doing already (eg a post regarding incorporating multi-desktops/windows enhancements, please browse the MS website for "powertoys")
Also, you do not want it to turn into mac OSX as this would SUCK BALLS for powerusers and IT pros (like me)
Finally, somebody asked for windows vista to be able to play DVDs straight from the BIOS. If you really want this to happen, try reading up on what a BIOS is/does. WV has NO control over the BIOS of your computer, and CANNOT gain control over it.

What i want to see in WV has already been included (as has much of what is in here). So there's no need to elaborate on that.

For those of you who want WV to work on "older" machines, buy 95/98 they work as well as the machine does. Seriously WV on an old PC will not upgrade anything, in fact it will probably reduce the functionality considering the amount of RAM it needs (i have 128MB of RAM sitting by me if this is an upgrade email me (yoda2031@gmail.com) and i'll post it to you)

Last but not least:
If you want WV to have "OS emulation" (ie be able to use MacOSX/Linux/Win9x/WinME on the same system) simply grab another HDD (or partition your existing HD) and install the secondary OS on that, then configure your BIOS + CMOS to either boot one or the other based on a keypress, or boot a specific one each time until you change it using the BIOS software.

Seriously, dual booting isn't that hard (and if i didn't need all 250GB of my HDD and wasn't skint) i would do it myself.

Right, that's cleared up then. TTFN

Concurrent browsing.

Basically the idea behind this is that you and a friend can simultaneously browse the web. You see what they see and vice versa.

So you would open a connection with the user, at which point an IE window would open from within MSN and you could browse the web together...probably the best use of this would be for technical support or showing someone how to do something on a webpage.

No need to press x numbers of "Next" buttons.

The biggest changes or enhancements I would love to see would be;

1- Give the user much more control of what they want installed. I.e. be able to remove, not only hide various peices of software (WMP or IE).

2- More personalization options. If I want to have my name or some other word besides "Start" I should be able to do this without having to download a thrid party program to make this change.

3- Allow users to buy the cheapest version of Vista and then allow us to buy "Enhancement packs" to add functionality of more premium versions. I.E. I have XP Pro but would love to add media center options to my PC without having to format and reinstall with a new Product key.

4- Allow the user to change the look and feel anyway they choose. If I want classic start menu's, make it easy to do so. If my Mother is used to how WinXP looked and performed, allow her to check a box that would make her new Vista look and act like XP did. Its all about being able to use your PC, not about the eye Candy to many users. Sure, pop those security fixes in there, enhance performance but, if a user prefers to use a GUI like XP, let them.

5- Add in a security feature that DISallows hiding of folders/items. We can not trust many companies and Microsoft could make itself look a lot better if it found a way to diable rootkits.

1. Have Voice recongization to launch programs right from Vista's desktop
2. a new flexible right-click menu, easily to mod right from a Vista control panel.
3. Able to put two different wallpapers on dual monitors, and also put more options for dual monitoring.

You should give me one of those invites because I think all BetaNews staff are really cool and I would hate for me to start thinking otherwise?!@#$

It would be nice if Vista had the ability to host an audio/video chat session between two workstations. I have audio/video chat sessions with my daughter at college in Texas all the time because I live and work in Korea. It would be nice to be able to connect IP to IP instead of using Messenger or Yahoo services.

i would love to see a way to make chat more fun with a personality statment more then the emodicons/ pictures maybe make it fun by having an audio greeting from you to your friends that chat you.
or be able to show your friends that there is much more to messenger by letting them know the new and exciting features in the program and
one of my biggest ones is a way to record the voice conversations for later relistening .
thank you

I Would like to see a full OS emulation not just compatiblity modes, I may just just be a retro gamer but the abilty to restart windows or just log out and come back in as Windows 98 or Windows XP.

A better restore system that creates a special partition or can be targeted to another drive to not only save windows settings but most used files.

At the moment I am only seeing Aroe Glass UI i hope and want the abilty to returne to "Windows Classic" to conserve RAM.

The Abillty to fully customize the UI not just skinn to fully change.

I would like a good set of built in tools for controlling remote devices such as door and lock timers, sensor systems and appliances.

The best feature they could come up with is a fast, efficient and functional Desktop management just like VNC although incorporating drag and drop file transfer.

1) Sandbox / Virtual Machine included, so you can start up a VM using as a base your current environment configuration and applications you have installed at the moment, so it would be more difficult to hose your real OS when testing out something.

2) Better security / parental controls, so I could explicitly allow certains apps to work in a profile and they would run without problems, and disallow everything else: Registry, OS files, personal files, etc. (kind of a VM with restrictions).

3) Password-protected centralized log files, so I could go to one place to look what apps have been opened and closed, what pages were surfed, what registry settings have been changed, what hardware has been added/removed, what files have been accessed.

It amazes me, though it shouldn't, how many people seemed to see the title, barely skim the article itself, and hit Post.

I count quite a few posts about how to improve Windows Messenger...

Reading Comprehension, folks...it's really a usefull skill.

I would love to see an improvement in security in windows. There is nobody in the world that doesn't have a third party software that protects their computer that uses windows. whenever people get on the internet the number 1 concern for them is, am i safe. With hacker concerns growing people hardly sent emails. Vista should have something very powerful to bring back feeling of security.

The biggest change had to be for Internet Explorer. The reason most people use firefox is because of its simplicity about the security that it offers a user when using firefox. If vista doesn't bring a change in explorer in about 5 years firefox will dominate the browser market. Internet Explorer also needs to add extensions and themes to keep the user coming back.

another change is in it's updates, vista needs to find a better way of updating it's software. Which tells the user exactly being updated.

Windows Live Messenger does have to improve It needs to add video conferencing with atleast 5 to 10 people same goes for audio.

I hope you give me an invite for windows live messenger. I have tried and tried to get one but no chance.

I'd like to see a feature in vista that would allow our desktop to have motion (animated gifs or screen savers). Imagine you desktop is the screen saver of the aquarium.
