Dazzboard syncing a Palm Pre

Since Apple terminated iTunes' compatibility with the Palm Pre this week, there have been a number of services that have rushed to the forefront to make sure users aren't left with an unsyncable Pre for too long. This morning, Web-based syncing service Dazzboard announced its support for the Pre.

"We feel it is very unfair of Apple to penalize Palm and its growing Pre community, and we hope our free application will provide a solution for users are now left in cold due to Apple's decision," said Dazzboard CEO Tera Salonen.

Dazzboard does not require any desktop application to be installed, but does use a browser plugin which works with IE7, IE8 and Firefox 3.0 in Windows XP, Vista and Windows 7 RC. The service does not yet support Mac OS.

Dazzboard supports a substantial list of devices, which is not limited to phones, it also includes Mp3 players by Sony, Phillips, Sandisk, and Creative, Digital Cameras, select PNDs by Garmin and TomTom, and the PlayStation Portable.

"Since Apple terminated iTunes' compatibility with the Palm Pre this week"

LOL. Sensationalize much? You mean since Apple fixed iTunes to correctly recognize an iPod. Pre is not an iPod so guess what? It is not supposed to show up as an iPod. the Pre can play MP3's so you can still buy/use music from iTunes with the Pre. So yes, they are still compatible.

How can people honestly be mad when a competitor shuts the door to their own product being used in ways they don't wish it to be used? Like it or not when you install iTunes you agree to a license to use it. If you're using anything other than an Apple created product to sync with it, you are breaking that agreement. What Palm did was just brazen. As much as I love Palm gear this was just stupid. Even if you can sync with iTunes (by way of concealing your true identity mind you) you don't splash it all over the place and wave the red flag at the bull. How moronic can one be?????

Can the same thing be said about Windows...?

So you would be fine with Windows shutting the door on iTunes and Apple so that it wouldn't recognize any of their products since they are competitors?

Windows is an OS and it should allow any program that's compatible to run regardless of vendor. Similarly, Itunes is an media organizer and it should allow any product that has the appropriate interface to sync regardless of vendor

The problem with the whole thing is the 1 thing people dont reecognize is that Apple DOES have a few mechanisms in place for 3rd party products to access your iTunes music library and "sync". All Palm needs to do is create a little app that actually uses that system to do the sync...instead of taking the lazy way out, and exploiting a flaw in the iTunes software...and "borrowing" (for lack of a better word) the Apple USB ID to fool iTunes into thinking it was an iPod.

Zune Marketplace is EXACTLY the same thing....Microsoft is not responsible or obligated to make it work with ANYTHING other than the Zune. Apple has provided legit and documented (and widely used) ways to integrate 3rd party products.

Apple has every right to lock out third party products from directly syncing with iTunes if they want...it is software to strictly support their hardware. Cannon or Nikon camera software doesn't recognize the others hardware either....or Scanner software from Epson doesn't work with HP scanners.....

Everyone needs to take a step back and realize this. Apple did fix an issue with their software that allowed third party devices to falsely be recognized as iPods. Apple did NOT lock out vendors from being able to sync using iTunes as the media manager...
