Yahoo Invites Users to Try Mail Beta

By Nate Mook, BetaNews

September 14, 2006, 5:14 PM

Yahoo on Thursday rolled out the beta version of its Mail product to all users, inviting them to switch to the new AJAX interface that acts more like a desktop e-mail client than Web site. The Yahoo! Mail revision adds technologies that the company gained from its purchase of Oddpost, such as drag and drop organization, an instant preview pane, and upgraded search capabilities.

A built-in RSS reader has also been added to the service, along with an integrated calendar. Yahoo, which is the top provider of web based e-mail in the United States, counts some 255 million users according to research firm comScore. The company did not say when it would fully replace its traditional Mail interface.

I have no luck at all with the Updated version of Yahoo messenge...8 It continuall crashes, when in chat room the sound goes off, the screen freezes, and when I report the problems the message from yahoo states that I did not submit my logs when at the bottom of the report "yahoo states" that when I report a problem and send it in it will send in my logs and they will then be able to resolve the problems. I continue to get the same messages no matter what I do, ( You did not submit logs)

Epidote: those options are still available in the options portion of the beta. Only thing is you would have to change it there, sign out and sign back in for the change to take effect.

I tried their beta mail since the moment they launched, but then, there's one feature I didn't like and therefore, I switch back to the old version. That feature was the forward feature. The older version has a choice of forward as Attachment or Inline, I normally prefer to forward as attachment, as that will preserve the original structure of the message, rather than adding all the forwarding headers to the forwarded message. That's why I still stick to yahoo mail, but for the older version, not the new one.

YEAH GREAT!!! Microsoft and Yahoo are adequate competition to gmail. But better since gmail doesnt even allow you to sign up off the web. you need a txt message. that's bogus. screw you gmail.

I tried their beta once a few months back, and I did not like it. The extra coding just made their e-mail extra slow. I still much prefer the HTML version. I hope they keep it as an option.

Great thing, but not really liking the lack of the calendar sliding view. Oh well.. I am patient for it to get better.

I like Yahoo Mail, as I like the other mail services like Gmail, Windows Live and even Lycos.

Is this new? I hadn't realised that I'd been chosen as an early adopter!? I've been using this interface for many months now, and I won't go back. It's a HUGE improvement.

My only dislike is that new emails open in tabs that waste a lot of screen real estate. I always choose to open emails in a new window.

This makes no sense.

New tabs, by definition, open in the *same* window...using *Zero* extra screen real estate. A new window, on the other hand, does require extra screen space.

Many client apps now open your mail in a preview window, which, IMO, is better than both of the above solutions and why I use the preview bubble Firefox extension on Gmail. (It's not quite the same, but as close as we're gonna get for now)

not sure about this.. the main reason to me for using web mail is because its on another server PERMENATELY. won't client remove the articles from the server when they are downloaded to prevent duplicates?

At this point, I would be very careful of anything that Yahoo is offering. Yahoo, in their infinate wisdom and with their latest messenger has decided to install 3rd party software WITHOUT, first notifying you or giving you the choice to say NO.

One known 3rd party software that they are installing is Adobe Flash Player 9 (FP9). This version of Flash Player has known bugs both by Adobe and Yahoo yet they continue to offer it.

Are you surfing the Internet, or in a program that is IE dependent and then poof, your browser just closes? Are you surfing a page that uses flash and your browser just locks up?
Are you running RC1 of IE 7 finding the problems I have just described even worse?

If so, you have probably updated your flash player or Yahoo Messenger. There are sites that offer Yahoo Messenger 7.5 and if you search the Adobe site, you will find Macromedia Flash Player 8.24 which is the LAST KNOWN STABLE VERSION of flash player.

If your a flashchat operator, then I'm sure you read all about FP9 on the tufat forum and have made the corrections.

And I failed to mention, uninstall of FP9 is totally impossible without first uninstalling the latest Yahoo Messenger and if some of those ads with the new Yahoo Mail are a flash movie, then you can rest assure, that yahoo has included FP9 in this program too.

I tried to bring these issues to yahoo's attention about 6 weeks ago when I first discovered it. I received an email telling me that support would contact me within 48 hours. The only thing is they never told which year or for that matter, which decade that 48 hours was in cause I have never heard from them.

Come to think of it, Beta News did not even think it was worthy of news to inform it's readers, Do I Smell Collusion here?

My best advise to everyone is be informed. Know what you are downloading and installing on your computer. You will be alot better off for this.

Cheers

I hate Adobe, they make me sick. There software is buggy, bloated and crappy. Then they bough out Macromedia (Loved Dreamreaver, now it's going to be crap just like Flash 9) and also bought out the makers of Cool Edit Pro (a very good sound editor). And now it's crap.

I have been using this since I was a yahoo mail plus user. It's not as good as gmail. It looks and acts like a desktop client. It is an improvement as the ads are a lot less annoying. But I will be sticking with gmail. It is the best email client i have ever seen and I don't miss yahoo in the least.

I would love to move to gmail. Unforunately I have several things tied into my yahoo and I need a forwarding function(which yahoo doesn't supply...At least not for free anyway). But if I could forward all my mail to gmail I would switch in a heartbeat.

Been using Yahoo Mail Beta since it was first put into Beta (I think SBC/AT&T DSL subscribers were able to opt-in when Yahoo first put it into Beta). And so far up to this day I like the layout and design. I like how it looks like a mail app.
