Yahoo Shutters User Chat Rooms

By Nate Mook, BetaNews

June 23, 2005, 10:54 AM

Responding to a flurry of bad press and advertisers pulling their marketing buys, Yahoo has completely shut down its unmonitored user-created chat rooms, which reportedly were being used to promote sex with minors. The company did not say how long the chats would be closed, but will leave open company-created rooms.

It's not a secret that some of the largest Internet destinations, while catering to children, have long been profiting off adult-oriented chat rooms. AOL found early success thanks to its sex chats and Yahoo draws millions of users each day to its chat rooms.

The subject, while taboo, was an accepted facet of human nature and the freedom of the worldwide Web.

But last week, a report by KPRC-TV in Houston has highlighted the fact that some rooms were actually being used for illegal purposes. Adults were purportedly using Web cameras to send indecent pictures to children and lure minors into sexual encounters.

In response, advertisers have opened their eyes to where their brand was being promoted. PepsiCo, State Farm Insurance and Georgia-Pacific Corp. all pulled their advertising from Yahoo, and other companies threatened to follow suit.

Yahoo says it will keep the service shuttered while it makes improvements to ensure chatters are following guidelines. But without strict monitoring by Yahoo employees -- an expensive endeavor for a company with such a large audience -- enforcement may be an uphill battle.

Has nobody heard of content filters? Don't ask the parents to monitor their children! They are too busy at work or attending social functions. Content filters prevent children from accessing porn or other unacceptable content over the Internet, whether it be in chats, emails or Internet sites. I think a content filter is a good investment for parents as it will help to prevent unacceptable content especially from pedaphiles and other predators from reaching your children!

Once again, the net is to blame because 'parents' don't watch their children. As an adult website owner, the feds are useing child porn and child safety to shut down 'all' adult material even guarded book store. FYI, the Adult Entertainment Organizations catch far more child porn producers than the US Gov! It's a fact folks, far right want it their way in the name of God. Well, sorry, the Christian Right is neither!

It seems that this withdrawal of chat and now soon to be groups by MSN is powered by a purely financial motive and not a moral one, as why should we give anthing for free when we can make money on it. MSN withdrew chat from europe but if you pay a subscription you can access the US chat rooms, subscription being the oprerative word. There are still minors there, there are still adult rooms there. The only difference is that now you have to pay and you have to log on as US language. There were hundreds of rooms that were clasified as adult because the conversation was adult, that does not mean they where sexually orientated in any way. These rooms were a link to the outside world for many people with mobility and related problems. 99.99% of the people who used these rooms were responsible caring people. Only .01% where of dubious character. As always the many suffer for the few. Surely the problem and solution must lie with the parents.

Shutting down the chatrooms because people are meeting minors there and enticing them into illicit activities is like shutting down the mall because perverts find kids there to hit on. Should you blame the mall, its stores, or the other shoppers? No, the only people to blame are the perverts and the parents who aren't supervising their children, whether they are hanging out online or at the mall.

I respect Yahoo for bein against child porn because its just sick, but what about the parents?? Parents should know what THEY'RE Children are doing online. Adult who lure children into sexual encounters should be in trouble but no need to shut down the user rooms, I've seen 12 year olds talking bout sex in reg chat rooms, and some talking about aboutthings that made me sick to the stomach, its not all yahoo fault, its the sick adults and lack of parent supervision. I have a 11 year old brother and I refuse to let him on yahoo because even the young kids hae no respect and Iblame the parents not yahoo

A plausible action done by yahoo... but have they really stopped it?. Whats the point in shutting down the user chats, when all those people will just migrate into regular chat. ( I've already seen it. ). Yahoo only had to make the user based rooms more restricted. ( Such as word restrictions on the name of the room, or maybe an auto-boot system for sexual based material being posted. The users would then only have to invite people to private IM where they can talk about whatever they want, be it sexual or not. ) As for the minors being sexually provoked etc, its not up to yahoo whether your kids get on the chats or not. Be a good parent and monitor your kids, Don't blame your faults on a company that technically didn't do anything wrong.

I didn't even know about the user rooms until an adult friend of mine told me about them....i liked them because they were a place to meet like minded people...act out fantasies...unlike the regular rooms where it should stay clean....If you go into a room with a sexual name you should expect sexual chat...however in the regular rooms i agree that it should be appropriate for everyone....if teens and younger children were finding the user rooms why should everyone be punished...maybe their parents should have monitored their internet surfing a bit more...

I also liked the User Rooms. The only reason why so many children were affected by this was because of the lack of attention that the parents pay to what the kids are doing online. I really don't think it is fair that the rooms were taken away just because some stupid parents didn't want to pay enough attention to what the kids were doing or did not care enough to teach them proper values. I really hope the rooms come back.

User rooms were not free for all suicide pact or perverted many played music and gave a child a fine outlet for independance and friends.

I liked the user rooms, it gave many people the ability to narrow the conversation topics to what interested like minded people. Now you can't have a conversation without all the adds and bots. I feel sad that there have been children hurt in this. But that said it's not the fault of the majority of users. Let's face it, it's the fault of the parents that don't or won't take the responsibility of monitoring their children. Too many parents let T.V. and the internet raise their children and then get upset if something happens. Maybe someday people will learn how to manage their children and stop putting the responsibility off on others. One thing parents need to realize is that there has always been and will always be evil perverts in our society. So as a parent it's YOUR job to watch your children and ensure that they are safe, not mine and certainly not Yahoo's.

it is NOT our fault, as users, that children were lured to those chat rooms. It is NOT the fault of anyone except the parents OF these children. Point BLANK--watch your kids. I say this because there are positive impacts on people's lives by meeting in those user rooms as well, that people don't TELL you about. I actually found LOVE in a user room, and we are planning to marry next year!! Here. You can even ask HER! (nrchambers1702@yahoo.com) Tell her "mister amazing" sent you. And just think. There are THOUSANDS of people, just like me and her, that, if NOT for those user rooms...we would have never even MET. One of the main reasons everyone USES those chat rooms is because, let's face it, the other ones are FILLED with advertisements (bots) that we as "yahooligans" can't STAND. And the main reason we choose yahoo at ALL, rather than some dating server, is because it's free. Bring our user rooms back, and tell the parents to really be PARENTS...this time. That's my story..and I'm sticking TO it. --eyekneadluv1222@yahoo.com

for a long time yahoo has had alot of problems in the chat rooms but if the perverts cant chat here the there are 1000's of other chat channels like mirc, icq, aol, msn just to name a few where there there also. i feal that it is up to the parents to monitor there children surfing habits, and get with the programs of the computer that are out there to monitor what is going on. i have 10 computers in my house and i can monitor what is going on at any time any and all conversations are recorded and sent to me daily from the kids computers the younger kids are not allowed on the computer for any chat to the internet only to play local games on there system only as they say when in question just pull there internet plug and lock them out proper instruction to you kids is also a plus, let your kids know if they feal uneasy about a conversation they are having to come to a adult and let them know. its all in good parenting.

Ok, if they getting all consider people getting easy money.

Why dont they crack down on the booters (That a program run by a user that send massive messages over, over, and other difference users. Until their yahoo messenger program crash because the computer they are at could not support the massive data sent to them at onces. After they got crashed they can not use the messenger program like a half day later.)

Also with bots (self run spammer program message that bug you and bug all the time about using their service.) to me that is people are to damn lazy to get a real job I mean work for their money.

If yahoo is started crack down on that I think they should crack down on all the other bad apples make the rest suffer from having fun on the net.

why shut them down weren't the cops also using these rooms to actualy catch some of these people now the pedophiles will just find something else and the police might not be able to monitor them as easily.

Just explain this to the advertisers and donate some of the profits to the police so they can afford more officers to pose as kids and catch these people.

With all the money yahoo makes from these advertisers they can afford at least a couple million to help out.

exaggerated stories from the media is the key. Yes- there were some chat rooms that just the names were turn offs, very pornographic and questionable, BUT if anyone ever ventured into these rooms - NOTHING was happening- no cyber sex no violence no kiddy porn trading- 40 people in a room and no one even saying hello.I started and ran an Adult user room for 2 years - made some GREAT friends- learned a lot about other people, PC use and the internet and had teh most fun its possible to have on teh net. Never once in 2 years did I see an adult try to pick up a kid- if you were under 18 you were asked to leave. out of the tens&tens of thousands of people that used the rooms I wonder what the actual numbers were for adult-minor meets.

There are alot of good people on yahoo that did not deserve to get their freedom taken away. I role played in the user rooms before they were taken down, and this is causing alot of distress amoung those who did. Our freedom was taken away, and it is driving all of us insane to tell you the truth.
