Google Zooms In Satellite Map Imagery

By Nate Mook, BetaNews

Google on Tuesday updated the satellite images in its Google Earth software and Google Local search, adding two more zoom levels that provide a close-up birds-eye view of locations around the world. The change comes after Microsoft's Windows Live Local added similar capabilities.

"Now for many areas around the world you can see a lot more detail than you could before," said Google Earth team member Chikai Ohazama. "Take a look at people standing at the gates of Buckingham Palace in London, or jump over the pond and see the Statue of Liberty in New York."

Try viewing anywhere in Thailand or SEA...... or rural Australia.... a waste of time.

I live in Manhattan, NYC and judging by the status of some construction projects, there are a lot of areas (particularly downtown) that are still showing photos over 3-4 years old.

Did they update the actual images, or just the zoom levels? I would've thought Manhattan of all places would've been updated a bit more frequently.

They need more coverage.
try to find Bali or some capital city in Asia, such as Jakarta. and what you get ?

if Google did not have Bali which is nice and famous, do you think it is good enough ?

At least 1 1/2 years out of date. The school that went up last year is barely dug out in the sat. image.

Got a long way to go to real-time, I guess... Same season would be nice, though.

Was able to pick my truck out in the parking lot though, so I guess that's progress. I can prove I spent some time here...someday...over a year ago...
