iPod Classic, Meet iPod Touch

By Ed Oswald, BetaNews

September 5, 2007, 1:51 PM

With typical Steve Jobs flair, Apple introduced on Wednesday an entirely new player called the iPod Touch, while relegating its current high-end iPod to "Classic" status.

The Classic model is much like today's iPod, except with more hard drive space. It's thinner than today's 5.5-generation iPod, but comes in sizes of 80GB and 160GB. Pricing for the two models will stay the same as they are currently, at $249 and $349 USD respectively.

However, for most the biggest news of the day is the iPod Touch. Much like the rumors stated, the Touch looks very much like the iPhone, yet is thinner -- obviously due to the fact that there is no need for all the phone hardware.

It will be the first touch-based product with wireless to ship worldwide, Jobs said.

iPod Touch will also be the first model to include Wi-Fi, for which Apple has also decided to equip the device with Safari. Thus, in an area with wireless connectivity, a user could surf the Web while listening to music.

The user interface is the same as Apple's phone, meaning much of the features in the iPhone would make it over to the Touch, including YouTube connectivity.

Like the iPhone, the Touch would also include a sensor to detect when it's held horizontally, allowing for the viewing of videos in landscape mode. The display measures 3.5 inches across, Jobs said.

"We think its one of the seven wonders of the world," he told attendees.

"No doubt this was a huge launch for Apple this morning and leaves them with a product line that's going to be hard for Apple's competitors to match," remarked JupiterResearch analyst Michael Gartenberg. "I believe Apple once again met and exceeded increasingly high expectations. It now has a very deep and complete product line for going into the holiday season, at amazing price points and feature sets that will drive different customers into different purchase funnels."

The iPod touch will ship in "a few weeks" at a retail price of $299 USD for the 8GB version and $399 USD for the 16GB model.

"Apple is NOT preaching to the choir here," added Gartenberg, "they're looking to get a whole new customer into the house of worship and that's exactly what's likely to happen this holiday season."

The iTouch wasn't the first to have a touch screen. The Cowon D2 was. It's also Flash Lite compatible so you can add prgrams, watch flash and play games on it. Plus it's expandible with standard SD[HC] cards. So it'll also be able to use the 32gb cards when they come out. It's only $184.99 on Newegg.com for the 4gb model. I'd buy this over anything Apple puts out.

This is the first bad round of ipods, and it was inevitable because once the phone was out, everything else was going to be compared. Only the phone is subsidized by a contract, so every ipod from now on is going to seem strangely unattractive.

WHO NEEDS TO HAVE WIFI CAPABILITIES LIKE THIS?!

As far as I am concerned, until the "Touch" can hold anything close to what I need it to hold (at least 40gigs) at a sub-$300 price, they can take it and shove it.

16GB
"Wifi" capability (with nearly NO US cities having city-wide WIFI as of thus far, aka useless)
And what's worse: The Safari browser? *gag*
Wooptie doo it has a touch screen. It's still small. It's still useless to watch any type of video on it.

I'm salty about this one, if you couldn't tell. I'll pass. NEXT!

What is wrong with the Safari browser? It is better than Internet Exploder by a mile. The only thing that i don't like is that i have to loose my plug-ins that i have become so accustomed to in Firefox.

You don't need city wide WI-FI to use it. I have wireless in my house as do a lot of people. There are many WI-FI hot spots out there. I think it is a cool feature. Especially having access to a Web Browser.

That opens up a ton of possiblities.

- 4th generation: has Radio FM

- 6th generation: has bigger screen and can finally play DivX, Xvid video.
- 7th generation: has RAM extension slot

You can have ALL of these right now with non-iPod players. In addition, they are compatible with more audio and video formats. Yep. Apple customers are all dumb and everyone that does not buy an apple product is a genius.

Apple makes innovative products. Apple is an industry leader. They innovate. They compete. They do not have a desktop monopoly to fall back on.

You pay a premium because they make an awesome product that no one can match. If other companies made a truely equal or better product than Apple, Apple would not be selling stuff like hotcakes.

People just don't get it.

If you accept to pay a premium for what you think a quality, that's your own business. One can live happily without BMW or Hummer.

Apple's products are generally overly expensive. It is not creative to sell expensive products with less features (compare a Nano vs Creative ZEN or Samsung P2 and you'll be convinced). They succeed in this absurdity thanks to good marketing. I'll be convinced by Apple innovation only when their products are at the same price than major competitors.

The current iTouch players (8GB and 16GB models) will sell, and reap lots of dough. Then, as expected, sometime next year Apple will unveil a updated version of the player, one outfitted with a larger hard drive, an improved UI, and for a cheaper price.
