iTunes and Vista Still Have Issues

While the release of iTunes 7.1 does include a number of compatibility fixes that enable the software to work with most Windows Vista editions, Apple warns that users may still encounter problems. The company is working with Microsoft to resolve outstanding bugs.

Apple notes that ejecting an iPod using Windows Vista's "Safely Remove Hardware" feature could corrupt the device and require a full restore using iTunes. In addition, iTunes text and graphics may display incorrectly, and contacts may not sync properly from Windows to an iPod. For now, iTunes and iPods remain incompatible with 64-bit versions of both Windows XP and Windows Vista.

If you were smart, you wouldn't have an MP3 player that requires a program to transfer your MP3's, like my iAudio X5 60gb. It works with Windows, Mac and Linux... no software needed. Just plug it in, drag your MP3's over to the Music folder, unplug the player and hit play. You can't get any easier than that.

I can't beleive people are still buying the iSheeps. Baahh!

I completely agree with you both. I have 2 kids who both have/had 30gb ipod videos and I have a 60gb video. After a lengthy argument with Apple Care on the phone, where I was told that consumers will know when an Vista compatiable iTunes would be released only when it was on the web page, and not before, I decided to leave iPod behind. Though there are things I do NOT like about the Zune, I decided to go buy 3 of them that very night for the family. The next day Apple sent an email asking me to rate my experience with the Apple Care CSR. I gave it the worst possible in every category and explained that I replaced all my Apple iPods with MS Zunes :D . Two days later we get this crappy attempt at a fix and nothing has changed.

Apple will never change, it is a shame because I once thought of switching. (Not anymore)
I am going to stick to MS for one big reason, that is that they are not cheaters and do not do things like this. They either say it works or it doesn't work.

You could not be more correct.

This is Apple being smug arrogant pricks (like usual). They will drag their feet on this as long as they can because they think it will keep some people from upgrading. (If you put off upgrading to Vista just because of iTunes then you are pathetic).

However, this little plan will backfire, and miserably. I've already left iTunes because of this BS. I won't ever use iTunes again...yeah, good plan Apple. Piss off and screw your users...you sure showed them.

Now this is really all Apples fault.

The reason is that, they do not work with Vista is not because the have lots of bugs. It is because they think that the longer they can delay the vista version the longer they will keep gaining power over pc's. What they do not understand is that this will all just backfire on them after a couple months, because people will stop relying on Apple as much as they do now.

I am a Pc user and fan. Though this does not mean that I do not like Apple, because I think that they have a good lead in innovation over Pcs :)

itunes will play fine for hours on my vista install... but when i sync thins go crazy, i get blue screens of death... don't even try syncing your photo albums, that seems to be a death wish.

Strangest thing is i even decided to move back to XP on a different partition and wipe my ipod clean w/ an erase/sync and now that isn't even working. In XP my ipod used to work flawlessly... i dont know if it's the 7.1 ver or what... not much else has changed for me config wise.

I recently bought a new PC with Vista Home Premium and also downloaded the latest itunes v7.1.1.5. Synching my ipod video (60g) with music and video files no problem but trying it with photos, itunes remained in synch function without anything happening except on the first occasion, I had selected a lot of photos to synch and just left it to get on with (itunes said it was optimising photos), much later I get the 1st blue screen with error message KERNAL_STACK_INPAGE_ERROR without doing anything else on the PC. The 2nd blue screen, again attempting to synch photos, the error message changed to KERNEL_DATA_INPAGE_ERROR. 3rd blue screen, again attempting the same task, I click eject ipod in itunes (fed up of waiting for the synch to happen) I get the blue screen again. In trying to search for a possible solution, I came across your experience which appears to be exactly the same. Any joy in finding a fix or are we at the mercy of Apple and Microsoft?

combination of bitcomet and itunes while syncing caused my vista ultimate new pc i built today to crash... it did it twice and now i dont run the both at sametime and no crashes :-) wierd.

Ipod is the only device that could die after unplugging from a computer. Of course, this is not Apple's fault, it's always other people's problem. Just like the compatibility issue here.

Hey, dont bring me into this conversation. I only used ZenCast for 3 days (it kept crashing or randomly freezing at different parts of the program (yeah, i searched creative's community forums and plenty of other people are having the same issues).

At least (when it works), the Zen software doesnt corrupt the device and require a full restore using iTunes.

If it doesn't work then I blame apple. Aren't they the ones who made fun of MS for taking so long developing Vista? Since it took so long I'm sure they had time to get itunes working correctly.

No he's telling the truth. After Bill Gates got a visit from Mr. Hankey the Christmas Poo (he had a lot of fiber in his diet) he decided to implement a feature into Windows that would create problems with any software created by Apple.

Mhh, I believe that Apple is extremely lazy updating iTunes on purpose, but the eject problem must be (90%) a OS problem: Ops, windows forgot to announce that an apple device is going to be disconnected when you choose to do it from the OS, easy to implement for Microsoft. That left the itunesdb open and yes, there is a great chance that the DB get corrupted (is not hard to corrupt an itunesdb on any OS for the matter). Apple is to blame because of the database corruption and Micro$oft for the BSOD generated.
Microsoft, where is your "stable" system? Same kind of problems I had on windows 3.0? Come on!
As defense for Apple developing slowly, Microsoft did not update their Office suite for Apple intel plataform (they delayed for next year the launch), so they cannot really blame Apple for being slow. Office 2004 sucks all the way running native, so emulated is even worse.
Apple is showing arrogance, as usual. Microsoft is a pestilent corporation, as usual... Of course, we (end users) suffer this "war".

It's MS's fault?? Why is it a FAULT? Let me get this straight. If Apple released a new version of OS X and some programs didn't work with it would it be their FAULT? Or would it be that they introduced different ways for other pieces of software to function properly within their OS? I simply hate the fact that people blame MS for the way their software or OS's work. Simply put. You want your software to work on an OS (whether it be Windows, OS X, Linux, or whatever), you have to follow procedures to make sure that said software can work properly on the OS. Simple as that. So MS designed Vista to run software programs differently? BIG DEAL. You don't like it, leave it. Check the article on osnews.com. How many people actually leave? Damnit. MS does things their way just like other companies do. You don't like the way things work out? Write your own OS and push it to the major OEM's (good luck). And before anyone gets started I love all of these tech companies. MS, Apple, Creative, even the open source guys. Without any of them we wouldn't even be having this discussion or experiencing all of the great things that computers and technology brings us so GET OVER IT. Let's just all be glad that we can have more than one company for both hardware and software ideas and development.

Apple is the b**** making.. er yea MAKING their products be used only with their OTHER products. Would it be easier and less fuss if they made it Drag and Drop or at least an option. They could actually do what they SAY they are doing (Apple) and actually work with Microsoft to make that possible, Like Drag & Drop or Using another Microsoft program like Windows Media Player
It would probably much quicker and Less fuss until they actually HAVE fixed their b****y problem.
My iTunes DID work for a while than one day i restored my ipod and itunes started freezing... all the damn errors. got a new computer and the ****ing iTunes wont even come up without freezing (You don't even see iTunes, it just 'trys to fix the error'

I don't think so, you need to make sure when you have the most popular music player on the planel that your bloated software is compatible with the most popular o/s on the planet.

Apple is to blame for this one, unless MS intentionally made iTunes **** up with Vista. I wouldnt blame them if they did. The iPod is such a lemming product, why don't all of the iPod users go out and buy a Mac.

I've had Vista for about a month and there isnt one program that has had a problem so far. Buy a Sansa if you want a nice, small, inexpensive MP3/WMA, not AAC player. The iPod is a heavy, fragile, glorified music player.

Software companies (including Apple) have had all the time in the world to make their programs compatible with Vista. Microsoft didn't just suddenly tell developers that they were releasing a new version of Windows the day after it was released to manufacturing. Do YOUR research.

Apple doesn't really have an excuse, they should have had plenty of time to find any bugs.

I'm more concerned about freeware developers that might not have access to computer's with Vista. I've written a few programs and have had people complain about them not working in Vista. Not my fault, I don't plan on installing Vista anytime soon so there's really no way for me to troubleshoot any bugs that occur when my programs are run on Vista.

Considering that Vista is a complete rewrite of Windows NT there are bound to be compatibility problems with some programs. Just like when Microsoft released Windows XP which was a complete rewrite of Windows 98. If a particular program won't run under a specific version of Windows then it's the developer's fault if they choose not to obtain a copy of the latest version of Windows to fix any compatibility problems that might happen.

iTunes runs flawlessly on my Vista Home Premium install. But it is 32b and I don't have an iPod. I just use ut as a music manager and for the store.

I tried using iTunes 7.0.2 on Vista RC 2 and it completely corrupted my iPod to the point where it just said "Reload" on its screen. When I tried to do a full restore iTunes just gave me an error message stating it couldn't perform the full restore. I tried using the same version of iTunes on my other computer which had the final version of Vista Ultimate installed and iTunes (and the full restore) worked fine.
