Microsoft: No Sidebar Until Vista Beta 2

By Nate Mook, BetaNews

Testers and developers looking forward to playing with Vista's most prominent new feature over the holidays will have to wait a bit longer. Microsoft officials confirmed to BetaNews late Monday that the Windows Sidebar won't be delivered in a public build until Beta 2.

Microsoft on Monday released the December CTP of Windows Vista, which includes a number of changes mostly centered on the areas of performance, security and mobility. Build 5270 also includes the new Windows Defender anti-spyware application, and a feature called BitLocker, which encrypts a full hard drive.

But notably missing from the release is the Windows Sidebar, which testers have been anticipating since September's PDC 2005 conference where the feature was introduced.

"We're making great progress, and we plan to provide Windows Sidebar to developers in the Beta 2 timeframe," a Microsoft spokesperson told BetaNews.

In September, Microsoft also launched a special Web site for Gadgets, the mini-applications that reside within the Sidebar. These Gadgets can perform a variety of functions such as reporting new e-mail, listing stock prices and providing weather forecasts.

Most of the applications built for the sidebar will use elements of the operating system in order to function, which Microsoft told BetaNews makes the technology different from similar features offered by Apple through its Dashboard and Yahoo with its Widget Engine.

Microsoft's Gadgets can be developed using a variety of programming methods including C#, ZAML and more. Directing people to learn more and begin developing Gadgets, Windows lead product manager Greg Sullivan remarked at the PDC, "I think the sky's the limit."

Since that time, however, Microsoft has repositioned its Gadget Web site to work with Live.com. Live.com is the new customizable homepage introduced as part of Redmond's new Windows Live lineup of Web based services. Live.com Gadgets utilize JavaScript and XML, and will be compatible with the Windows Sidebar as well.

Still, Microsoft reiterated that it hopes to have finished most of Windows Vista's features by the end of December. A feature-complete build will likely be delivered in February. That means developers and beta testers won't be able to provide feedback on the Sidebar until its ostensibly set in stone.

"Good product design doesn't happen overnight, and Microsoft partners need as much time testing as possible to prepare Windows Vista based products," remarked Jupiter Research senior analyst Joe Wilcox. "Apple started designing the iPod nano a year before its release. How can, say, HP or Sony create that hot, '06 Windows Vista PC in second or third quarter and get it out in time for the holidays?"

But Microsoft is hoping an earlier-than-usual feature-complete Windows Vista build will be enough.

"Yes, we are still targeting to have most Windows Vista features complete by end of December and integrated into the product by January," a spokesperson said. "Doing so will allow customers and partners to have a feature-complete version of Windows Vista to test sooner in the overall development process than any previous Windows releases."

Says Sean Alexander on the Microsoft Gadgets site: "You'll be hearing more about Windows Sidebar over the coming months here as we approach release around Beta 2 of Windows Vista."

Well, what I do with my kids is this:

Build a skeleton

cd /home
tar -cvzf nameofkid.tar.gz nameofkid/

Since they don't have admin rights it never breaks, and I have only had to restore once when one of them accidently deleted their .gconf directory.

ssh me@kidscomputer
cd /home
kill `ps -fu nameofkid | awk '{print $2'}' | grep [0-9]`
mv nameofkid/.gconf nameofkid/gconf_saveforawhile
tar -xvzf nameofkid.tar.gz nameofkid/.gconf

have kid log back in.

It would take about 5 minutes of effort to make that a desktop icon so when things broke she could just click a button and have a working desktop back.

With 10 minutes of effort it could have been the desktop she logged into 4 hours ago so her recent settings would all be there.

What would you do if her Windows computer broke? You can't just ssh into it and restore from a restore file to fix it. Try doing that with NTbackup (not even installed by default on XP). ;-)

Hate to burst another bubble but I can count at least 10 common Windows apps that I know work on Linux because I use them.

Besides, what could she possibly use on her home computer that's not available for any other OS?

For those that don't, Win4Lin is only $29 and you can lock that down like crazy too.

Maybe she should "get right on that".

As great as that sounds in a comment or a forum post, reality is that when linux inevitably does crash (due to user's inexperience) because of the open source and wide variety of distributions, it is impossibly difficult to locate someone who can help you with your exact problem.

And even if you find someone as knowledgeable as yourself fewt, typically, not enough background is given to resolve the problem in the future.

I am a total linux n00b, and I'm not proud of it as I really would like to learn Linux. However, I feel that until some of the distributions combine and agree on some sort of standards, it will always be in the hands of the "young & single" stereotypical groups.

This post is not meant to be an insult, but look at the example you give. How much explanation did you give, you just give commands with some syntax. Normally, the instructions I find are more like your first line of "build a skeleton".

I can go into many pages of detail if there's enough interest. I do agree with you that there usually is not enough background other than "it's broke" nor is there enough detail in many cases to help resolve the problem. I did only give commands with syntax, however I was only trying to get the point across that it's not tough; not teach anyone how to implement it. :-)

Linux doesn't crash (unless you have a buggy driver or someone that shouldn't be root) but the desktops absolutely do crash now and again.

You have hit a spot that's absolutely true, and I know that I'm guilty of it myself (not being verbose enough in some of my comments).

When does Windows ever crash? Oh yeah, with buggy drivers and n00b users getting into the wrong stuff. Of course we also have to worry about things like viruses and spuware these days unlike Linux...but don't worry, time will make that happen.

I have two Windows servers that reboot themselves whenever you insert a USB device.

It's a riot.

Since everyone has admin rights on a Windows box it is really very easy to damage it beyond repair. You can't argue against it that people shouldn't have admin rights because they do, out of the box. ;-)

I've been hearing rumors of viruses and spyware coming to Linux for years, where are they?

You know that Linux runs most of the internet right? So where is the malware?
